Sooooo don't kill me but I have an M1 Mac that I use daily (generally for low-intensity projects). I live in an area where we get huge thunderstorms, so my husband and I both power off our Macs and unplug them when a storm hits. I don't care what else in the house gets fried -- I need my computer! Sometimes I have just enough time to do "shut down" and then unplug it super quickly before the house is shaking from the storm.

@@davideloi9176 Yep. This is how we got here. A single strike hit my house when we lived in a different city, and despite having APS units everwhere, it fried our TV, a window AC unit, and our HVAC system and the thermostat attached to it. The M2 Mac Mini with only 256 Gb of flash memory has the slowest SSD in any of the Apple Silicon Macs because it is implemented using a single 256 Gb flash module. This means that we are now in the interesting situation where the 256 Gb 8 Gb M2 Mac Minis are being sold off very cheaply. They are being sold for only £400 by several outlets including Apple refurbished. If it fell to £250 on this Black Friday then I might be interested in buying one. This is the price that I normally buy my as new iPhones for.
@EnglishMikeАй бұрын
Nice computer, but $200 for another 256GB storage and $200 for another 8GB memory is a complete rip off. It's amazing they keep getting away with daylight robbery. I do need an Apple device for web development and testing, but if I get a Mac Mini, then if I need more storage, a $60 T1 external SSD is much better value for money than spending another $400 for the internal upgrade.
@altosackАй бұрын
While we know what you mean, it has 256 GB, not Gb. “Gb” is only used when denoting line speed, where it is also used improperly since it _means_ Gb/s, not Gb. The only way “Gb” makes any sense is if it means Gigabaud.

DON'T TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF EVERY DAY! The bulk of electronic component wear is from heating, and cooling of the ICs, and other components. This is easily avoidable damage. Same goes for stereos and such... Thermal Expansion: Different materials expand and contract at different rates. Repeated heating and cooling can cause mechanical stress at the junctions between materials, potentially leading to cracks or delamination. Fatigue: Over time, repeated temperature changes can cause fatigue in the materials, which can lead to failure. Solder Joint Reliability: ICs are often soldered to circuit boards, and thermal cycling can weaken these solder joints, increasing the risk of failure. Increased Leakage: Higher temperatures can increase leakage currents in transistors, which might affect performance and longevity.

Moving from an iMac 2020 Intel i9 fully loaded with 64 GB RAM, 2TB storage (some of it rotating). All my intensive work is 3D CAD related using Fusion 360. Sure, I do a lot of Photoshop, and make a videos for my KZbin channel, but I rarely even have a B-Roll. So I have decided to upgrade to the Mini with M4 Pro, 64 GB RAM, and 2TB SSD. $2,800 due here November 29. I can't wait to slime the new USB-C charged keyboard with turkey fat juice. I already have one Apple Studio monitor as 2nd monitor with my iMac, but will buy another Studio Monitor for use with the Mini when I sell my iMac for an estimated $1K. Apple is going to have it's hands full making an Apple Studio with M4 that is value for the mainstream - even with the Ultra, they are boxed in on lowering prices.
