I really liked your toaster oven trick, but there's an even easier way to buy you a little more time to fit the bearings. Pop your countershaft into the freezer for about 20 minutes, then after heating up your bearings in the toaster oven, put the two together. It gives you an extra second before the parts temperature equalize and the shaft stays cold enough you can do both sides. I use the freezing trick to remove the old bearings as well. Once the shaft is frozen, I can put a propane torch on the bearing without worrying about heat damage to the shaft. Use a dull chisel as a "wedge" to separate the bearing from the shaft as you're heating it up. It really helps if you have an extra set of hands holding the torch.
@polymetric261411 ай бұрын
Sounds a lot easier than what I did. I just dremeled a couple notches in the races to weaken them and then hammer them out with a big punch. 2 notches worked on the smaller countershaft bearing races, but I had to make 4 notches for the big tapered ones.

@tom56078 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video! The bearing at 28:00 can be removed with a wide chisel placed between the gear and the bearing so as cutting would not be needed. I used a very sharp chisel to loosen all my races that needed removed-be careful. This is an easy way to remove your races. I used your oven idea for my races but not bearings.

Hey. Just popping in to make a few comments. 1. I am very much envious of your working relationship with either your son or your effective apprentice. It is obvious both have a very respectable amount of background knowledge, and I relish how that comes across in the back-and-forth banter you two have. Mutual respect goes a long way in my book. 2. Video work is very good. High resolution. Instinctive knowledge of what mechanics want to see. Props. Very effective vid. 3. Love the toaster oven. I use a full-size oven more for powder coating and it never occurred to me to grab up a toaster oven at a garage sale for bearings or for that matter rod ends. 4. Nice shop. Small, but clean and organized. I could use a little help tier for sure. Only negative I have: I was hoping to see what method you used in measuring countershaft and input shaft shim clearances and matching up your figures to the service manual shim charts. Well done. I hope I stumble across another one of you vids in the future. Best regards, -Richard

I'm in the process of swapping a 2wd m5r2 over to 4x4 and also using the internals from the 2wd one because the input shaft and needle bearings are trashed in the other What I would like to note, is the way you removed the bearing from the rear half shaft, you used a grinder, well I found a much much better way which saves the bearing also if you need to use it, put a rag on your hand, and grip around the shaft just below the bearing tightly, then with a piece of cardboard on the ground to protect both the shaft and the concrete, just lift it up and drop it onto the cardboard from about an inch or so up, it'll come right off in 3 or 4 taps, that way you're using the weight of the gears to your advantage as basically a dead blow, I checked all the pieces over well and they did not get damaged from that at all, hopefully that helps you out with any more that you rebuild in the future and saves you from the headache of grinding and potentially damaging a gear or shaft

If you run a weld bead around the bearing race itll heat up up enough to come off
@paulelowsky58932 жыл бұрын
I believe the preferred method for removing rear main bearing is to use 2 or 3 jaw puller with about a 12 inch threaded puller shaft and engage the jaws on the gear adjacent to the bearing. Both come out at once and there is no stress on bearing cage. I also do not recollect seeing you install the swage nut on the cluster shaft, the one you used the 1 1/4" impact socket on to remove it. Also transmissionpartsdistributors does carry 7 piece needle bearing kit for around 38 bucks but you actually need a 9 piece kit as 5th and reverse use to bearings apiece but im sure if you call them they will include the other two bearings and they also carry the cluster shaft nut and the main shaft nut for 20 bucks for both.

I know this is an old comment, but make sure you're measuring that with the bell housing facing upwards. I stacked some bricks with 2x4s on top and put the transmission on that with the output shaft in between so it'd sit flat. You also want the rear bearing retainer in. You want the shaft to seat as far back as possible when you make that measurement so the bearing is resting on the rear outer race. Also out of range by 1 thousandth should not matter

I can't find anything anywhere for the F27A, and from what I've read, the 2nd digit is what indicated the year made. I just haven't any idea if there is an internal difference between the 1991 and 1992 m5od-r1 transmission.
@watcherwatchmen77857 жыл бұрын
I would ask this question to a transmission parts vendor, since this is all they do every day. Make a phone call. If it came from the same engine size and year range it should work fine. An obvious thing to check if you were in a junkyard would be the physical size and if there are any differences between the transmissions such as bolt hole locations for the bell housing and length of the transmission. Also junkyards have a computer system to tell you if the parts are compatible. An example of incompatible transmissions would be If it came off a V6 and you have a 4 cylinder the input shaft on the V6 is thicker and won't fit the hole in your 4 cyl crankshaft.
@paulelowsky58932 жыл бұрын
As far as i could determine the only structural differences were between r1 and r2 and that was in the shift rails. One completely encircled 5 reverse rail i believe and the r2 only halfway around. Its been awhile so i might be wrong but i believe that was the modification that justified the new classification. Dont recall anything as to a difference in any of the gears or synchros or blocking rings

Hey guys I’ve got a question. I rebuilt my trans for a 93 2wd 3.0L ranger that come to find out had a blown up counter shaft bearing. I replaced all the bearings, put it all back in and made it about 150 miles and the counter shaft bearing blew up again... what could cause this issue?
@watcherwatchmen77857 жыл бұрын
There is probably too much play in between the parts. If there is too much play, the bearings will wear out fast. If you just replace the part that failed instead of figuring "why" the part failed, you'll just be replacing the part over and over again. Try and pull up and down, and in and out on the counter shaft. Does it move? It shouldn't move at all. Your case might be damaged, but there are shim kits that you can buy that take out the slop.

My friend and fellow viewer has a bronco and a 4bt in front of his m5od. he's got 33" mud terrains, 6" lift, solid axle up front and he uses it regularly off road. He's pulled many stuck rigs out of sticky mud and sand. I believe he's pulled a flatbed trailer with a mustang on the back. Keep em full of oil and change it regularly and they will last.

best way i found was to use my big angle grinder to cut most of the way at a angle and then finish making it as thin as possible with my dremel and then put a chisel in the slice and hit it and it should split down the seam and slide rite off

Just let the weight of the gears act like a slide hammer to knock the bearing off by giving a couple sharp raps on a padded hard surface, like your garage floor.

Ok, what's in the old Ford? Sounds like a 4BT

At 1 hour and 11 seconds you put a ball bearing in.. If I hadnt been so curious what you were talkjng about I would've completely missed it while rebuilding mine..

Johnson's Gee-rage awesome thanks I am actually waiting on my donor truck to do a full 4x4 conversion on my 95 f150
@watcherwatchmen77857 жыл бұрын
My second transmission rebuild cost about 250.00 in parts, but every transmission will need different replacement parts. The bearing kit alone can be found on amazon for about 80.00 if you look using the search "m5r1 bearing kit".
