I think a good mortar fire control system should be able to accept data from drone(or from other source),with the ability to produce its target's features automatically and quickly,and it'll has a led screen to show a graphic hint to aim its target easily.

That commando mortar looks really interesting. like a combination of a Japanese Knee mortar but with the mechanism of something like a German light mortar. I think those would be superb for the fighting happening in Ukraine at the moment. If I ever go to war, id want something like that at hand.

70mm could give best of both worlds, high lethality and range while being similarly light and simple as that 60mm is. There would be serious cost benefits in the long run with going to single caliber. 120mm mortar should also get serious diet.. in my opinion it wouldn't necessarily be that bad if there would be also short barreled versions with less range but still retaining the effectiveness of 120mm shells, it would make it more portable.

@menckencynic Plastic tube? The charge required to fire the mortar projectile, which is a bomb, would kill the operator. An 81mm L15 round weighs approx 10kg, has a range >5,000m, takes a lot of power to get it the trajectory for indirect fire, such as from behind a hill. Indirect fire means a higher alltitude, apogee, before it falls to target. Direct weapons can use lower charges, or a recoiless system, such as used in the old M72. The Carl Gustav 84mm, and other like it, already provides such capability

the Germans had the 120mm short mortar in service in Ww 2 but it had a huge muzzle flash so they preferred to use captured Russian mortars which had a longer barrel. Finland tried short barrelled 81mm mortars but found that the muzzle blast hurt the crews o they quit using them.
