There was also going to be a Transpennine motorway called the M67, from East Manchester to Sheffield. However, it actually finished near Hatterlsley, around 2 to 3 miles west of Glossop, in the late 1970s. It's never been extended since.

Fascinating and so-predictable for the UK. Thanks for the research.

Never mind about all that northern stuff. The real question has to be, why there is no fast south coast route from Dover to Cornwall? This would make far more sense. There's a tiny bit of motorway around Portsmouth and Southampton (M27/A27). But that's it. Forget the M25. That's virtually up north to us Sussex folk.

The New Forest cannot have a motorway built through it.
@TheYougig12 күн бұрын
@@colinbeadle4201Probably true. But it could have a motorway built to the north or south of it.
@bensaund11 күн бұрын
South is the sea and north, you have the A30 and A303. New Forest has a 2 land dual carriageway which could easily be increased to 3 lanes. The bottlenecks are Ringwood and Chichester, plus the missing section at Arandul, until Chichester and Arandul are sorted, there is no point. Plus what do you do at Worthing, not many options.

Bit like the A27 at Arundel.

When did they tarmac it. It was concrete then I went recently and it wasn’t.
@rogue26510 күн бұрын
In some areas where the concrete is starting to degrade they cover it in a layer of sacrificing asphalt to extend the life of the concrete

The route eastwards doesn't make any sense after Colne.
@Andytoknow-117 күн бұрын
@@timoakley277 it does seem complicated, I did get it confirmed Tuesday that it was to follow that route from the M606 along the aire valley trunk road to the M65. Of course Boundary Mill, the retail park and Sainsbury's have put paid to any connection now which like most road schemes planned back in the 70's and 80's were nothing but a pipe dream 👍 The Story of the M606 due to air on Sunday will explain in some more detail aswell

@Andytoknow-1 thanks for the explanation. I lived in Skipton and when you look at the geography and population centres, it didn't really work, well in my mind anyway.
