M8! You’ve got two tiny abscesses!

This much loved hand reared cow, M8 (Matey), had two tiny abscesses that were pretty easy to treat. Two quick lancings, both ventral, dilution with diluted betadyne, systemic antibiotics, she should heal up a treat. A very sharp scalpel is roughly as annoying as a needle full of lignocaine, and lignocaine doesn’t work when injected into abscesses that are directly under the skin.

My mom and dad were farmers in Northern Vermont USA and had to move to Connecticut after the barn burned down due to a fire in the milking equipment. I would have loved to live on a farm again. The metal halter might be uncomfortable but they are in it for a short time, and they are busy thinking about that rather than what you are doing while also restricting them from moving which keeps you and them safe while you fix em up. I am interested to know what these complainers would use instead and if they have ever handled animals this big and powerful when they are sick or injured. Because I know from personal experience, an injured animal these guys size, tends to not want to be messed with and will fight you to get the heck away. So yeah this tool for this short time is necessary and is humane. Never stop sharing your wisdom Doc, I am learning so much that is helpful to my animals, I just wish people that have no clue would keep their opinions to themselves.

Truthfully & all joking aside it is pretty bleak from Dec. thru Jan. Then again I can drive less than an hour to be skiing Mt. So, anytime I was helping the Vet with my Morgan Horse with a procedure and needed to calm the horse. would anchor 2 halter lines to each side of the Hallway & take 2ft. of weed wacker line and press it with a good amount of pressure across his upper high gum/teeth line. @@gianisoma let me tell you the truth Australia has some very beautiful places yet there are a just as many dodgy places just like the USA Australia has some real weird towns im talking wrong turn type towns that you don't want to be leaving your vehicle because some people don't value human life like others do. Have you seen the movie Wolf creek if so let me assure you there's 100% places like that in the Queensland outback. Where you are so remote not a living soul will ever hear your screams. So don't ever as a tourist go bush in Australia without a local who knows the place or you might just end up a statistic. Ps our farmers are hard arsed 100% tuff bastards.

He has sideswiped a couple of heavy plastic planters and shattered them without batting an eye. May of May not have nailed a few parked cars too but Incase the owners are looking for payment I can confirm the impacts. He’s a nut but I love him.

The abscess material is directly under the skin (where you would normally try to infuse anesthetic). Simple quick lance and drainage is the best treatment as anesthetic would both be ineffective and unnecessary, but cheers for asking!

Hey doc. People keep asking about a local, before the cutting. I know that locals don't work very well on infected flesh in people,I just assumed it was the same with critters too. Is that the case?

Correct Tom, there is literally nowhere to put the local as the abscess is directly under the skin. Luckily, distention numbs the skin a fair bit too. Cheers!

When people create noise re metal head halters , no LA or don’t hurt the animal you know we’ve lost touch with the real side of farming . Large animal vets , good LAV , are damned hard to find so having one so good who isn’t anxious about showing real technique or it offending people is just really doing his job . I’ll even let the adverts run !!! He’s fast , thorough and you can tell he knows the end result will be good .

Howdy Brad, the abscess itself desensitizes the skin to a fair extent. Because the pus is right under the skin usually, there is nowhere to deposit local. A super sharp scalpel blade is a bit like a sharp knife in the kitchen when you nick your index finger on your left hand... you sometimes don’t even notice it at first!

Amber, the needle would hurt as much as the scalpel and lignocaine infused directly into pus is ineffective. We are quick, we are efficient, and she gets back to her friends. (We were preg testing her and her 150 mates) no charge, no fus, no more abscess!

I think there are less flies because this is Australia. They have to have a lot more land for cows to graze as the grass gets scorched. Since more land to graze manure is more spread out then here in the states. Just an idea, I'm not an expert.

@@renag1123 I grew up on the sparsely populated plains of South Dakota. Any time a wound was opened almost immediately it was covered in flies. The cows and manure were widely spread. The weather was severe. Both hot in summer and -0 in winter, but we had flies, mosquitoes, and grasshoppers
