Great video! Lots of details that other videos left out! I have moose and deer antlers we’ve found and purchased on our travels! Plan to make some for grandchildren!

Excellent and beautiful!!! Probably not much i can say that you haven’t already heard or perhaps figured out, but since I didn’t see in comments.......... drilling the lanyard hole before cutting and shaping might be easier and more forgiving as you have more surface area. Also it saves sanding time because you’re sanding the hole that’s already there, thus avoiding extra cleanup. Lastly, if you sand to a relatively high grit..... antler takes a polish like no other!!! Just beautiful! And if it has natural grooves, that makes for a wonderful contrast! Happy whistling 😁

Since this is six years old it is too late but if you are still at it please consider an n95 and face shield. I have lost FOUR flute maker friends to lung cancer. Like your work, btw!

Look into getting a plug cutter. They are inexpensive, will fit right in your drill and allow you to make plugs out of any material you want. no more shaping and sanding!

Very nice work my friend, but we both have the same problem, not enough shop space! But I will be making some of the whistles, fun projects.

Very cool video, the wood peg is easier for sure but this looks great, bet it lasts longer then a wood ped unless you treat the wood peg with clear coat, or something like it nail polish so on. They wood pegs get softer when wet just like the old wooden whistles and it can ruin them eventually.

Here's a Tip. When you start drilling the end hole and you don't want it to slip. Cover the end in masking tape. Same principal as drilling ceramic tiles.Hope it helps. Good tutorial .

And it doesn't hurt to start the hole with a tiny bit to give yourself a line to follow. Depending on how big the bit is and what type, a pilot hole can really help steer you straight despite a bit that wants to wander. This tip is especially good if you want to make something with antler that is not straight, start from each end and aim to a point, meet the pilot holes and then its not going to come out the side on you.

Does the inner part of the plug have go all the way to the end hole or does it end in the middle of the whistle?

That's a fun project. As useful as it is it would be a good project to get children interested, and they would have a whistle at the end. ATB

Nah I got it covered... I use a dryer vent hose from my hi-performance furnace intake motor... it sucks all the dust and chips into the house vents, far and away from my lungs and eyeballs. The kids are gone all day, and the wifey likes the smell of Antler in the morning.
