Maaloula or Maʿlūlā is a town in the "Governorate of the Countryside of Damascus" in Syria, The town is located 56 km to the northeast of Damascus and built into the rugged mountainside, at an altitude of more than 1500 m. It is known as one of three remaining villages where Western Aramaic - said to be the language of Jesus - is spoken, the other two being the nearby, smaller villages of Jubb'adin and Bakhah.
Studies indicate that the history of Maaloula has been inhabited since prehistoric times. This was demonstrated by the studies conducted on Mount Maaloula and its rocky cliffs. معلولا هي بلدة في محافظة ريف دمشق في سوريا ، وتقع على بعد 56 كم شمال شرق دمشق ، وهي مبنية على سفح الجبل الوعر ، على ارتفاع يزيد عن 1500 م. و تُعرف كواحدة من ثلاث قرى متبقية حيث يتحدث بها الآرامية الغربية - التي يُقال إنها لغة السيد المسيح عليه السلام - ، والاثنان الآخران هما قريتان صغيرتان قريبتان من جبعدين وبخاح.
تشير الدراسات إلى أنّ تاريخ معلولا مأهول بالسكان منذ عصور ما قبل التاريخ؛ وتبيّن ذلك من خلال الدراسات التي أجريت على جبل معلولا وجروفه الصخرية؛ حيث أقام إنسان نياندرتال خلال الفترة الزمنية ما بين 200-40 ألف سنة قبل الميلاد، وسكنها الإنسان الأكثر تطوراً من القديم بين 10-7 آلاف سنة قبل الميلاد؛ حيث لم تقتصر إقامة الإنسان خلال هذه الفترة في المدينة على الكهوف الموجودة في الطبيعة؛ بل لجأ إلى حفر الكهوف، ونحتها في الصخور سعياً لتشييد المعابد، والمنازل، والتماثيل للآلهة التي تمثل معتقداته الدينية.
تعاقب على مدينة معلولا عددٌ من الحضارات القديمة؛ ومنها: الآرامية، واليونانية، والرومانيةن والبيزنطية؛ وأخيراً العربية الإسلامية؛ ويظهر أثر هذه الحضارات بما تحتضه المدينة من آثار ومعالم
