Maaloula, a Christian village in Syria
Second day of my tour in Syria.
We start our drive from Damascus to Aleppo, and on the way, we stop in Maaloula, a Christian village that was destroyed by Isis. The headquarters of Isis were in a hotel on top of the village, and the hotel was heavily bombed when the Syrian government managed to take back control of the village thanks to the help of the Hezbollah.
Then we visit the church of Thakla, the woman who christianized the region. The nuns of this monastery were kidnapped by Isis, but luckily for them, they did not arm them, and they were freed when the village was freed.

Correction: It was Al-Qaeda that kidnapped the nuns of Maaloula NOT ISIS! ISIS is the enemy of Al-Qaeda and they always fight, kidnap and assassinate the members of each other. Al-Qaeda always accuses ISIS of being an agent working for Iran and the political regime of Syria. The head of the nuns of Maaloula, after being released peacefully, confirmed in an interview the claims of Al-Qaeda and she praised the men of Al-Qaeda for their hospitality. Al-Qaeda claimed also that it kidnapped the nuns of Maaloula to protect them from a conspiracy made by the political regime of Syria that planned to kill the nuns of Maaloula then accuse Al-Qaeda of doing it. Thus Al-Qaeda kidnapped the nuns, kept them safe in a big house as guests then released them peacefully. The funny thing is that the United States accuses Iran of hiding many leaders of Al-Qaeda on its lands. It is also known that in the beginning of the Syrian crisis, the political regime of Syria released many very dangerous Islamists from a high-security military prison near Damascus called Saydnaya prison. These prisoners became later the leaders of the Islamists who fought the political regime of Syria for many years.

@@KinoYves You are welcome. I forgot to mention other bizarre facts. Iran officially supports HAMAS that fights Israel. HAMAS is connected to Al-Qaeda or it is a part of it. Iran fights Al-Qaeda in Syria! Turkey supports Al-Qaeda. Iran fights AL-Qaeda in Syria. But Iran and Turkey help each others on many levels! HAMAS fights and fought Israel for long time but Israel supported the Islamists in Syria, allowed them to have bases near its borders and accepted their wounded men in its hospitals. The Islamists of Syria officially supported HAMAS! It is really complicated and can not be explained logically. But the only clear thing is that the Ordinary Syrian people are the real victims of the Syrian crisis.

@@aldallika3648 wow, that's completely insane actually. Modern geopolitics are completely nuts... and actually it is also similar with what France did. France supported the front Al Nosra (so Al Qaeda in Syria), but at the same time, France started a war in Mali to fight against Al Qaeda... it's also hard to see the logic. But anyway, I completely agree with you, in the end, normal Syrian people were the innocent victims of a huge geopolitical mess... it's really a disaster, all those governments just don't care about the people.

When we were kids we used to go to Maaloula and cross this canyon slowly because of the water spring that crossed it back then, that was around 27-30 years ago. Since then the whole region started to dry out. I have came across an Italian village that looks exactly like Maaloula but I forgot its name! The fascinating thing about Maaloula is that houses and churches were carved in the mountain itself. People there are very nice and kind, and that hotel was a very good business indeed, the whole region used to celebrate weddings and new years evenings there. wish to see Maaloula again

It’s not surprising that the nuns got targeted , the head nun was supported by the late wife of Hafiz al Assad, she made big donations there every year. They used to have an orphanage there as well. Every year they made the festivity of the sighting of the holy cross. Helena the mother of Constantine send an expedition to find the holy cross on which Jesus was crucified. When they found it in the holy land they made signal fires all the way up the mountains until the message reached Konstantinople. Each year on the 12 September the Christian’s in Syria celebrate this by putting fires on the mountain tops of maaloula.

Correction: the kidnapped nuns stayed in a town called Yabroud by AlQaida and they weren’t hurt on the contrary they said goodbye to their kidnappers when they left. They were liberated by a man called George Hiswani who is a Syrian-Russian citizen and has long and strong relationships with Putin (the nuns were arrested in his house actually) it seems that Alqaida had some requirements that needed to be fulfilled in order to liberate the nuns and they had no intentions to hurt them so they liberated them after having what they asked for

Syria's economy was in decline before the war. In fact, a lot of researchers point to its economic problems as causing the civil unrest. GDP did peak in 2010, but so did oil imports! Syria had an oil boom prior to 2010, but they ran out of steam due to declining oil output and sanctions on exports. On top of that, droughts in 2008/2009 hit them hard, what with 23% of their GDP being agricultural. The droughts meant they had to import food, which they didn't have money to pay for any longer. Unrest was inevitable.

Well, in this case, I really don't think so, the forced conversions to Christianity happened much later, mostly during the Middle Ages, and of course, also during the conquest of the Americas by the Europeans. The story in this video dates back from the very beginning of Christianity, when being a Christian was actually forbidden, just a few years after Jesus died, and at that time, Christianity was definitely not used as a tool for war, and it was technically impossible to force people to convert, as anyone claiming to be a Christian was gonna be sentenced to death by the non Christian majority.
