I'm a big fan of Pariyerum Perumal and I felt Maamannan is the most generic movie made by mari selvaraj out of his 3 movies. There were enough scope for a lot of good scenes and conflicts, but nothing gives you the full goosebumps when the payoff happens because none of the characters are fleshed out enough. There is just flashback after flashback and song after song in the first half and film travels to too many places. So you never really feel the angst of the protagonist or the pain of Vadivelu during the interval block like you feel for Kathir in PP movie. The election portions were too much of a drag and like BR said, too much spoon feeding the audience in the end. Definitely didn't feel like a end to end Mari Selvaraj Movie.

I don't know if he is so much admitted to make movies which fight castism and oppression why he got diluted due to commercialism ,his pariyan character was a normal human but the movie had much impact and his final single dialogue 'unga pona patha poramaiya iruku sir Ava nenachatha Ava Nala pesa mudiyithu " was very powerful than his rest of movies .

I just finished watching Mamannan. What i infer is, Mari Selvaraj is gonna be a Visionary for our and the following generation.. His films are politically relevant, hard hitting yet a honest portrayal of characters. I am mind blown with Mamamnan. Vadivelu sir's potential has been handled the right way. A stunning performance. Kudos to Udhayanidhi for doing such movie. Fahadh was terrific and Keerthi was perfect. Overall a memorable watch. ❤

This was at most a 7/10 for me. Great 1st half bogged down by a mediocre 2nd half. I've seen people saying Mari Selvaraj shouldn't touch caste related subject matter anymore but honestly that's his choice. I would say he really should have focused on the character arcs of the 3 main characters a little bit more (Vadivelu, Fahadh & Udhayanidhi). It would have been really nice to see the movie exploring Rathnavel's (Fahadh) relationship with his father a little more. Perhaps Rathnavel in his youth may have had friends from different castes but his father tortured him and essentially moulded him into the monster that he is (almost like the arc of Homelander from The Boys). Keerthy's role was unfortunately unnecessary to the plot. Though I rate her as an actress, I feel her recent ventures are making dents to her craft. ARR's music and songs were top notch but i think the movie itself didn't need that many songs. As a fan, I liked the background score but I do wonder how SaNa would create the music for this movie. As for Udhayanidhi, I would say he did relatively well considering the gravity of this project. He really stood out in the pre-interval scene. Back to the criticism of Mari Selvaraj, which i think is uncalled for, I would say he needs to add a bit of subtlety to his craft. I have 0 problems with him using cinema as a platform to talk about oppression but i feel some people think he's being too on the nose with the issue. Vetrimaaran is a good example of a director that has utilized oppression/casteism in all of his movies (except Polladhavan) but as an element and not the core of the films. His films have mostly been about character arcs and themes that are more in the spotlight than oppression/casteism. That's what makes him such a great filmmaker Mari for me comes across as someone who wants to convey his messages through his movies but it seems that people aren't really caring for it anymore. Hope he's able to add subtlety to his craft

I feel like this movie had wayyyyy more visual storytelling and subtle communication of intent of the scene, and I do feel the arcs are completed for all three characters, fafa wanna be the dominant one, Udhay wants to fight against it, vadivelu want to not be provoked by it and do his job, Keerty, as baddy told, is practical woman who stands for what is right, yes she had less impact in the film, but I feel her inclusion and her performance gave a good flavor to the film and yeah I do feel the arcs are completed for all three characters. I feel like due to the arrival of tv series, and web series, where we are used to watching great depth of story, and arcs much more fleshed out, we subconsciously expect it in films, I see a lot of good movies don't get enough credit coz of this, but this isn't the case with tv shows. Comparing different filmmakers and seeing who is better seems to be not possible in my opinion, each filmmaker has their own style, we can be a fan of their style of storytelling, but I am not sure if we can tell one filmmaker's way of storytelling is better than another. Mari has used montages and symbolisms really well and they really communicated whatever is going thru the character's mind without dialogue, it takes really great effort to visualize these montages and cuts first and get the actors, dop, and editor to work on them convincingly, having spent a good amount of work in pre-production too, during scripting and screenplay. But yeah, I do agree with Baddy on certain scenes to be not fleshed, just a tiny bit tho, and the election scenes and rushing to conclusions.

I just watched the movie. It’s good but not at expected level. It had many high moments but most of them were not utilized properly. Especially the final scene of the trailer. I understand you do give us a spoiler alert at the very beginning itself but when you give us the spoiler alert, i immediately pause and close the video and only watch your review only after I’ve watched the film. Watched this movie & I’d rate it a 3/5. The story is good, screenplay not bad; Fahad is top notch followed by Vadivelu, in his best role since Esakki from Thevar Magan. Mari as a story writer fared better than the director. Cinematography was v good but music was a huge letdown. Songs were not worthy of mention & the BGM stood out like a sore thumb. Mari’s previous 2 movies had relatively superior music scores. Fahad takes the cake bringing the right intensity to a role that could’ve otherwise gone on to be just another mainstream villain. Kudos to Udaynidhi for selecting to act in & back this subject as a producer.

I got scared a couple of times when FaFa appeared on screen (can never manage to digest animal cruelty.. felt there should've been some trigger warnings tbh)... It is a generic villain character- but this is the best example of what a good actor can do even when given something so basic... Vadivelu was wonderful as well.. BR's review is art! the observations that he makes- I just dont see it in any other reviewer... am completely in agreement with BR's point regsarding director"being in a hurry to complete" .. was thinking- even after Mamannan wins the election, he gets killed so that there is need for another election- or something a little more dramatic.. but the political debate being used for telling the story- was "meh".. Apart from (absolutely brilliant) FaFa and Vadivelu- others have not managed to stay in my mind.. Personally- Pariyerum perumal is still the best work of Mari Selvaraj...the message is best conveyed through an overall good packaging- here- packaging could've been better.. ironic that some one who has been a dubbing artist for such a long time has hardly been given any dialogues...

The movie is a masterpiece. Unlike BR, I was not left wanting to know more about the characters or deeper onto the backdrop of the events. Racy screenplay, overall. I felt that a couple of scenes could've been edited crisper - such as the Men pelting stones on the kids swimming in the well seemed to go on & on and the election drama sequence had wasted frames. Overall - the intensity and melodrama was very high but the right level of potion or emphasis on each scene made sure we didn't dwell on them longer than we need to. Vadivelu absolutely deserves best actor award in whichever ceremony this movie enters, and Mari the best director. A.R.Rahman brilliant score touched the high and low emotional nodes equally poignant.

The essence of your comment suggests that Udhayanidhi is an exemplary talent, Vadivelu is a stalwart in his craft, and Mari is a universally acclaimed director with the movie itself being Oscar-worthy 😂😂.it's vital to adopt a more critical and mature perspective. The protagonist's privileged position in the industry, largely due to familial ties, is a matter of concern. Such films, despite their apparent artistic value, often serve as thinly veiled political promotions for specific parties. It's crucial to recognize this underlying motive for a more accurate assessment of their impact. We need discerning viewers to bring about a positive change in the industry and our state.

It's intriguing to observe that you're directing a film focusing on themes of caste and oppression, featuring a protagonist who is a vivid embodiment of nepotism. It's an apparent contradiction: while advocating for equality and social justice through your cinematic narrative, you simultaneously overlook the issue of privilege that is directly in your sphere of influence. While films like these may claim to provoke societal change, their impact often falls short. They serve less as catalysts for meaningful transformation and more as subtle vehicles for promoting certain political affiliations and ideologies.

Dialogues or silence intensifies these scenes, because fitting serious scenes inside montage song, did disturb the audience from engulfing the purpose and meaning... Manannan made a decision to let down his people and in turn benefits from that.. wonder why Fahad would ask athiveeran to sit if caste is so deep rooted in him. The second half is childish. Vadivelu is a lovely actor but some important scenes remind us of his iconic comedy scenes. Fahad is a terrific actor and the director has done good justice to his character alone. Especially how he hugs his wife before falling at the feet of his community leaders. But caste is deep rooted in normal people. U don't have to be freaking monster or a psychopath. 1) The flashback scene where oppressed boys were stoned and killed for using a temple well. 2) Ratnavelu refused to allow Maamannan to sit in front of him. These two events are what Mari Selvaraj wanted to portray as part of his pain. As we witness many similar incidents in our everyday lives, it is important to continue making films on this topic, even if it may seem repetitive. However, what this film makes me question is why Mari Selvaraj chose to make it a feature film, as the inclusion of generic, unnecessary drama dilutes the entire concept of creating films for change.

Did you listen to the review of Blue chatty. That's a balanced review. You are glorifying the Director too much. Review should be balanced so that public can choose whether to see the movie or not.

Very pedestrian cliched effort from Mari with oft repeated caste symbolisms throughout. It is a obviously a political launching pad production, to show that the ruling party is for the eternally downtrodden when reality is far from the truth in current rural caste politics of TN. Looks like even independent film makers who have artistic potential have been hijacked by political ambitions into making an Uber violent animal cruelty film. What were the censors thinking it beats me? So much hype that even the reviewer Rangan to get wider audience acceptance has to give this very avg film a 12 min review. ARR songs are well crafted but BGM is predictable. This is where the young generation of Mallu filmmakers are uncompromising in their craft not succumbing to a populist political themes and parties but exploring socio cultural themes of downtrodden in a subtle fashion.

As a child Mari Selvaraj saw his house getting burnt by the caste people in his village. You, living in your own little elite bubble, can call it old fashioned or whatever but he would never stop telling his story over and over again until the whole of Tamilnadu acknowledges the caste atrocities.

@@HarishParthu123 my point is that even a director like him has to succumb to current day political influence of DMK. No party has changed the casteism faced by extremely downtrodden.

Isn’t it way too much in detail the review plus perspective of views differ so not everyone has different views on each scenes . I think it’s time to keep it simple the review . All this while did not even mentioned the performances in the movie.
