I just purchased the Fuji xt10 but haven't received it yet. I am coming from a CanonT3I. I have always wanted something different and just took the plunge. I know that there will be a huge learning curve but I am looking forward to concouring it! You didn't mention time lapse. it isn't a big deal for me because I use my Sony Xperia Z3 for that but I was curious if you tried it. I'm sure I will reference your video many times when it arrives. I was worried about flowers because I mostly see street photography so I was very pleased to see you take photos of them. They do look over saturated. Maybe that's why not to many people use this for nature! lol! I never follow the crowd so I had to give this beautiful piece of kit a go! I think she and I will have a happy life together... after getting to know each other that is.😉 Thank you!
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+millie williams I wish you a long and happy relationship. I found the viewfinder over-saturated, not the images (but if you do, I recommend you shoot RAW and adjust the saturation to your taste). I did play with the interval timer, it works, but I didn't have anything I wanted to show. Please watch as many times as you like!

Thank you for your reply! I hope that I don't have to do to much in post,as I am still learning that as well! Lol! I have the deal where you get Lr and Ps for a monthly fee but I tend to try and get my images pretty close to my liking in camera. However, as you know, that is not always possible and sometimes I want to create a certain mood that is kind of there but needs a little help. I don't mind bright but I don't like really over the top almost cartoonish color pops! Well, I guess I will find out soon enough! 😊 Thanks again!!!
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+millie williams There's no need to take it over the top, but there's a lot of finessing you can do in LR. I tend to try to get the composition right in camera, take both JPEG and RAW and then post if there's something I think could be improved, or didn't turn out as spectacular as I'd like.
@buddah6109 жыл бұрын

Excellent and competent review…simply put you do a marvelous job !!! I bought two xT-10's for everyday and street use, one kit and one body only, and they perform proficiently day and night on the street with the 18/2 and 35/2. The 18-55 kit lens is an exceptional value kit lens for travel and knocking around. I'm quite pleased with the CC and B[r] simulation JPEG's that require minimal editing in Lightroom and print nicely at A3. I have an Instax Printer in the bag for courtesy prints on the street. Though I have large hands the camera operates well enough, having set all four Selector buttons to Focal Point, and the [too recessed] Record button to ISO as you suggest, but Lock everything down when wearing gloves. I also use them for Still Life, Landscape, and Portraits with the 16/1:4 and 90/2, plus the 11 and 16 Macro extensions for closeup work. [Those lenses being too front heavy for extended carry without the accessory grip ].

+ordinaryimages Thank you for your kind words and sharing your insights. I share your appreciation of those modes - there's something very inspiring about the B/W modes on Fuji cameras. And yes, the Instax printer (although I don't take it everywhere) is quite the useful accessory. Good shooting.

i never had a dslr or a mirrorless , justa point and shoot , and i'm really tempted to buy this one. for a entry level do you think it's good ,or too much complicated? :)
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
I'd be tempted too. I actually think that the control set on the X-T10 make understanding and using the camera simpler than other cameras. That said, there is a lot to learn (and by learn I mean try and experiment). I think that's both the challenge and pleasure of photography - trying the various capabilities under different circumstances and learning which helps you translate your photographic vision into an image. Hope this helps.

hello sir just wanted to ask what raw file converter are you using? *amateur here lol* great stuff btw. such a soothing review
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
+Joops Miranda Anyone who asks about and is planning to use RAW files is at least one step up from being an amateur (not that there's anything wrong with that!). I use Lightroom to open RAW files. Although there have been occasions when a new camera's RAW file format isn't yet supported, in which case I use the manufacturer's file convertor. And thanks for the kind words, although I'm not going for "soothing", it's always nice to read my viewer's comments.

Thanks for the comprehensive review. It was best that I have seen for these days. I have two basic questions as I am new in photographing. 1.If I set max aperture in manual mode and then start zooming does that aperture change in relative to zoom scale? 2.And is that aperture change effect can be viewed in viewfinder and display simultaneously before taking a shoot? How about shutter speed change. If I change shutter speed while viewing the object is that change effect can be seen in display? I noticed that advanced filter and film effects can be applied and shown in display before taking picture. Is that the same?
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+Budsuren Uuganbayar That's very kind of you to say, thanks! For question 1, it depends on the lens. Some lenses have a ramped aperture, and as you zoom in the aperture will change. The 18-55 in this review is a ramped aperture lens. Not all lenses work like this - better lenses will have a constant aperture. For the second question, yes, you will see the aperture change as you zoom (it's not very noticeable, if you use Auto ISO it will compensate.) It's even more difficult to see the effects of changing shutter speed, (unless you're longer than 1/10th of a second - which is not supported for video on the X-T10). The processing required for some effects will cause the display's refresh rate to slow - which may be the effect you're seeing.

great review, you answered most of my questions in it. pls keep such awesome reviews coming. I would like to know, which one will you go for a Fujifilm X-T10 or Panasonic GX8 or Nikon D7200 or Sony a6000 or any of your personal favorite and why? I'm very confused at the moment as I'm planning for my first pro camera☺ I've been into mobile photography for a couple of years now and I now need an upgrade, so pls suggest me.
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+Ashish Tiwari Thanks for your kind words, and taking the time to comment. Since, in my judgement, they're all good cameras, unless there's a specific feature or function that one offers that is lacking in the others, choose the one you love the look of, the one that you'd never leave at home and the one you'd be proud to be seen with. I truly have nothing bad to say about any of these ... If you have an understanding of the basics of exposure and want to be in control, take the X-T10. If you're happy shooting with a viewfinder and the size and price of the D7200 aren't out of your range, take the Nikon. although I haven't shot with the GX8, (my G7 review should be finished shortly) Panasonic's firmware features go beyond the others in several ways. Personally, I own the A6000 because I absolutely fell in love with it when I reviewed it and it paired well with my NEX VG20 video camera.
@AshishTiwari199 жыл бұрын
+Maarten Heilbron thank you so much for the reply. I personally love the Fujifilm XT10, but Nikon D7200 has an upper hand here with great battery, weather sealed and of course brilliant video quality. but the Sony A6000 is the most economical of the choices and does almost all the work. I would love to hear your personal take, which one would you buy had it been your first Camera and why☺ and should I wait for A6000 successor? I know I'm just being a super excited kid, but I like carrying the best gadgets with me which would never let me down so pls do suggest me whenever you can☺
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+Ashish Tiwari You could always wait, as there will always be a new model ... If you love the X-T10, then by all means jump in - I'm sure you'll be pleased. Economics played a good part in my A6000 decision - it really delivers a lot for the price.

+Maarten Heilbron The 36 mega pixels, in-body stabilization and all for under $2000, got my attention. Now with the camera in hand, the Panzerwagon like built is reassuring, feels like a tangible investment. I am glad I got it, however at this time, I am somewhat lost in the menu. Thanks, always nice to hear from a new and appreciative viewer (subscriber?). If there's anything about the X-T10 that you find appealing, then I would recommend that. great video and review ! I have a question, what's the best settings to use for configuration in S and M mode + menu settings ? there's so much to get lost in. lol Thanks Maarten :)
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+CJ Markrush Shoot in RAW+JPEG mode. Use AutoISO. Most photographers prefer A mode as aperture (a soft background) is their most important thing. And then they'd use the smallest Fstop possible. If you're shooting action, S mode is better, and in order to stop motion, you probably want 1/500 or faster - depending on lens and distance to the subject. If you have to ask, don't use M. Even for these, this is only a guideline. Go out and shoot and evaluate your photos, then keep shooting. In time you'll start to understand which settings are best for which kinds of pictures. The beauty of digital photography is that it costs you nothing to try all kinds of settings to see what happens and to understand that if this is not a good situation to use that setting, what is. That experience will also give you a great deal of familiarity with the controls so that when the situation arises, you'll be ready instead of fumbling. Good shooting.
@cjmarkrush39679 жыл бұрын
+Maarten Heilbron Thanks for the response I really appreciate it ! I'm finding out that using S mode and also Aperture Priority works better for me and I do like using Auto ISO but the screen appears noisy which I"m sure that is normal right ? Coming from a Fujifilm S5 Pro DSLR and Nikon bodies, it's sure different to use, heck I even had an Olympus EP-1 ! haha. I'm sure I'll be enjoying this camera more and more and can't wait to get the other models and lenses soon, I have the 18-55 f/2.8-4 L OIS lens for now. Happy shooting to you too and keep up the great work and reviews ! :)

Hello Maarten, Great Video! As always. I have a little situation: How do I get to this camera's shutter count? Thanks and have a great day!
@MaartenHeilbron5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. I am not aware of any consumer device that can display the shutter count on this camera. Why is this a concern? At some point, the shutter or some other mechanism in this camera will break or fail and you'll need to replace it. Worrying about that in advance will not help you create better images. If it pleases you to take hundreds of images - then that is what your camera is for, regardless of its shutter count. I understand that it's an interesting metric for purchasing a used camera, but I would regard the overall physical condition of the camera as the best guide to how much it's been used and how carefully its been treated.

What do I do, considering I love my Nikon dslr's and I'll never give them up, and I'm just looking for a holiday and street camera that'll give me dslr type quality. Oh, fantastic video BTW. You're the best reviewer on YT.

Thank you for the kind words, and for trusting my opinion. I'm with you on the holiday and street question - traditional bodies and lenses really put the lugg in luggage. When a viewer asks about trading in their DSLR gear for mirrorless, I usually advise them to hold on to the kit until they know they're happy - so I think that's the right decision. I think the X-T10 is an excellent value for this purpose. I assume that the focus (sorry) of your work is stills - otherwise I may need to suggest some alternates.

***** Yes stills only really.

Very good, then I'd happily go with the X-T10. Personally, I like the 18-135 for travel, although the 35mm F2 prime is also an excellent lens and might be better for streeting.

I am looking for a mirrorless too and am currently thinking of the X-T10 too however my work is more video focused, would you recommend a different camera at a similar size and price point?
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
Before the X-T2, I would not recommend a Fuji for video. Panasonic G7 kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHy4i6KMlN2Jj8k or Sony A6000 kzbin.info/www/bejne/npyln62bbtyIh7c might be better.

I am considering this one over the X-T2 which in stores today here in Japan. I want the 18-135 mm lens because I am travelling a lot so do not want to change lenses. The XT2 + 18-135 mm + grip cost around 3000 USD here (after negotiating). The XT1 currently goes for 1500 USD with the 18-135 mm.

I got a fuji xt10 today, and I think your explanation about this camera is sufficient. I agree with you, If this camera has HDMI out and video mode I will open a wine bottle. Ha... But still it is good photo camera and good for short videos..

One more thing...I am still learning. I am self taught going on 2 years. I am turning 50 in a couple months and this is a passion I put off for many years. I am starting to understand exposure but I am not that confident. I started to buy the Sony a6000 but in all honesty I didn't like the jpeg's and sometimes I just use those. It just...felt off. If I continue to practice do you think the Fuji will help me with learning exposure or is there a book you recommend? I let negative comments swirl in my head and build self doubt.
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+millie williams I assure you, we are all still learning. I'm over 50 myself. The best exposure teacher is trial and error. And the beauty of any digital camera is that you can keep trying hundreds of options and combinations at very low cost. And the time you invest (ten thousand hours if you'd like to be expert according to Malcolm Gladwell) will reward you with both understanding, expertise and a faster reaction time when you want a specific shot. The best book to read? The manual. And try everything. Every setting. Best wishes.

Just wondering, I think you mentioned it, so if I turn the camera for portrait shooting, the EVF wont turn? or the LCD at least?
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
+DannySkateTV Sorry if I wasn't clear. 't course, both monitor and EVF work for both landscape and portrait. The overlay menu, with the settings display rotates to portrait mode only on the EVF.

Hello Maarten. Thank you for your great reviews. I'd like to know if you can plug an other external microphone as the Fuji ST1 on the X-T10 ? Would you recommend me this camera to do video shooting or the x-t20 ? Thank you for your help

You can use an external mic, but you will need an adapter for the plug. I'd recommend the X-T20.

Confused between X100t and xt10.. i know xt10 has interchangeable lens so that's an advantage , tho read some articles on attachable lens for x100t .....what would you suggest to start off with mirror less cameras ... x100t/xpro2/xt10

Hello my friend, good work on the video! I wanted to get your help if possible because i am really confused about which mirrorless i should get... Till now i only performed smartphone photography, and i want to upgrade to a mirrorless camera, but there are so many choices... Fujifilm X-T10, Sony a6000, Olympus E-M10 II, etc... I am interrested the most with the image quality, durability, and i need a camera that i can grow up with, and be a great compagnion as my first ever "real" camera. Thanks for you time!!
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind words, and I'm pleased to help - although assessing one camera as best for your needs is difficult without a longer conversation to understand what kinds of images and scenes you'd like to capture. If you have no brand history or investment in lenses, first make a decision about whether stills or video are most important. You'll find more differences in video than in stills. For image quality, I do recommend that you read the reviews at dpreview, which provide excellent comparable detail. The X-T10 is an ideal camera for someone who's decided to be passionate about photography - it enables you to get a better feel and quicker response if you are prepared to learn and use the manual shutter and aperture controls. That will help you understand light and exposure in a way that enables your creativity - a particular strong aspect of any Fuji model. Personally, for as much as I enjoy shooting with the X-T10, my recommendation might be to spend a little less and try the Sony A6000 or Panasonic G7 models. Their video capabilities are better and they are overall slightly better featured than the X-T10. That said, after eliminating those that don't have the specific features on your must have list, I generally recommend that you choose a camera first based on your hands (try them on for size and finger positioning), and your wallet (don't forget to include lenses in your thinking). Then select the one that you would be proudest to own, the one that you feel a strong affinity for, the one you'd never leave at home. Hope this helps.
@josepha86578 жыл бұрын
+Maarten Heilbron Thank you very much for you reply and time! Well in my current position, i can get the X-T10 with 2 lenses (16-50mm & 50-230mm) for about 700$ and the a6000 with 2 lenses (16-50mm & 55-210mm) for 1200$... so the X-T10 is way cheaper than the a6000 for me... and i am more interrested in stills my friend. So do you think i should get the X-T10 for this price? Thank you again :)
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
Wow, great deal. Yes, at that price (and with little interest in video) that's an excellent choice.

based on your experience, what is better camera Fuji X-T10 or Sony A6000 and why. Im having a hard time deciding which one I should pick. Thank you.
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
+garylparas I would have a hard time too, as they're both excellent choices. If there's no feature that makes one the obvious choice over the other, I'd consider the following factors: my wallet, the size and feel of the camera in my hand, and my heart. The one to buy is the one you're proud to own and would never leave at home.
@garylparas8 жыл бұрын
+Maarten Heilbron Thank you for the quick response. Im not cosidering the price and size as of now and I cannot say which one feels great on my hand because I haven't yet tested them. In the tests that you have done which one has better image quality. Thank you
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
+garylparas Fair enough. For image quality, I don't really have the tools to do the kinds of measurement that dpreview and dxomark do, I suggest you check their results.

@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+Roy Kin Thanks for the kind words, but ... I didn't intend to be robotic, so I'm sorry that it comes across that way. I do intend to be factual instead of passionate. I did like the camera, it's particularly nice if you have a good understanding of the basics of exposure, and prefer to manipulate manually. For myself (it was on loan from Fuji, so it's been returned) I need to have more video features (particularly live HDMI out) to consider purchasing it.

great review as always - thanks - yes video is something Fuji just does not do well - and of course no 4K - and of course we will Never Ever see Fuji implement Touch LCD and Touch Shutter - Fuji is catering to the purists - with odd dial layout for beginners - and to me a lack of FN buttons - yes there are programmable buttons - but unmarked - I think they could have added few FN buttons on the back - it looks pretty empty - Also no C1 C2 C3 mode - which is so practical - like if one likes to switch to BW or some film simulation - it requires menu diving each time - Fuji has nice lenses and quite a decent selection - but I think the sensor is getting a bit outdated although a decent sensor - the other thing is that Fuji will not implement IBIS anytime soon if ever - and most if not all of their primes do not have IS - So time to buy a Backlit sensor from Sony - so at least to make up for needed higher shutter speed in low light - or they could buy the Samsung 28MP Backlit sensor :) Samsung is struggling and rumors they are pulling out - although they come out with some oddly worded statement saying no they are not pulling out - but at the same time saying that they are checking the market etc. - Sony likewise is rumored to discontinue the APS-C size sensor with the A6100 rumored to be released next spring - and resources site that Sony has not released any new APS-C E mount lens in a long time as one of the supporting statements - My guess is that Sony will take over Olympus camera division in the next few years - so they will inherit the M43 sensor - So Sony might just focus on the 1 inch sensor and M43 - leaving possibly Fuji alone with APS-C in mirrorless :) well just speculation - I appreciate certain things in the Fuji cameras but then other things just bug me to no end - Will you do an overview of the Canon G3X ?
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+igetsmart Thanks for the kind words, and the encouragement. I'm not sure that I agree with all your comments - there are 7 custom settings available (admittedly not on the mode dial). Except for video, I don't really see any deficiencies with the Fuji sensor, even if it is dated. You do provide some interesting speculation - let's see what happens. Although Fuji is not perfect, neither are its competitors - each is missing features that would be nice to have. Canon Canada has changed their media relations team and currently does not have any of the newer models to review - but I continue to pursue.
