probably the best x-t1 review I have seen so far. good, calm voice, precise info and good footage. I especially enjoyed the through-the-viewfinder perspective, thx for that
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
DistemperpK You are too kind! Thanks for your comment. The viewfinder footage is a challenge, jamming my iPhone camera into the eyepiece, trying to hold the two steady while manipulating controls is a challenge. But the X-T1 (although with other Fuji models) just does viewfinder really well, so it needs to be shown.

Great review and you have a new subscriber. By the way, the range of X-mount lenses covers a lot of ground now. I have the XT-1 with the excellent 18-55 and the 35mm 1.4 which is very good for its price. My next lens will be the 55-200 telephoto and the amazing 56mm 1.2. Excellent review of the Fuji XT-1. I've owned a XT-1 since day one and it's a remarkable camera. One thing I mentioned on another video comment that you covered in this video is the lack of an actual "video mode". Fuji gives you no options to modify any parameters for video mode other than video resolution in the menu. Then when you go to press record, it just initiates recording without allowing you to adjust anything. I think the record button should initiate a "recording mode" where you can make adjustments before starting a video. You can't adjust any features that affect the recording. Also your aperture and iso settings active before you record will be automatically readjusted depending on the value. I hope they resolve this.
@MaartenHeilbron10 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks for the kind words and the detailed comment. In my experience, when a camera does not have a live/clean HDMI it is not suitable for video. All the other factors are secondary. If I can't have an external monitor and/or external recorder, that eliminates it from consideration as a serious video camera. On the other hand, if your video needs are met by being able to record a short clip for posterity, etc. then the X-T1 (like so many other cameras) is fine.
@iamneallyons42636 жыл бұрын
how have you found owning this camera, is it any use with autofocus and taking pictures of a moving object?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a later model - Fuji's focus systems have improved dramatically.
@iamneallyons42636 жыл бұрын
which later model, also remember price point - i dont/didnt want to be spending £800 on a camera a this point in time which is why i was looking at these along with a few other cameras.. the olympus omd e-m1, omd e-m10 mk2, omd e0m5 mk2 or panasonic gx85/g7 or gx8. I had looked towards sony a6000 but the limited range of glass puts me off, i wanted something i can use for general purpose shots nothing specific, the only specifics is that my hobbie is driving/cars and i would like it to be able to shoot the odd car fly-by, then to take pictures of the cars with good backdrops in the countryside.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
The X-T2 or X-T20 have improved focus systems over the X-T1. You may wish to reconsider your position on the availability of lenses for Sony e-mount. Over the last year Sony and many third parties have dramatically increased your options with very high quality lenses.

I demo'd the X-T1 recently and I am so in love with the huge EVF viewfinder. To be able to alter shutter, aperture or ISO and see the results and DOF instantly through the viewfinder is a feature that once I used it I don't ever want to go back to a DSLR optical viewfinder. I have been using Nikon DSLR's for years - just a enthusiastic amateur - but once a decent lens goes on the DSLR's become too heavy to lug around these days. I seriously think this camera is the answer to my dreams. Except - I HATE the bokeh on the 18-55 lens, it is ghastly. If I bought the X-T1 I would save up and buy only Primes. One more thing - if only it was a full-frame camera I could work with shallow DOF a lot more but I think my mind is made up - I adore this camera. Thank you for this great review Maarten.

What is your recommendation if I'm serious about photography? I really enjoy your reviews. Keep them coming. Thank you for making KZbin interesting.
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
itcontractwork Thanks for the kind words - interesting is what I'm going for. If you're serious about photography, spend as much as you're comfortable with. If you can afford it get a camera that offers full manual mode, a micro four thirds or larger sensor (I make an exception for the 1" on the RX100) interchangeable lenses and a viewfinder (in that order of importance). Find a camera that suits you for style and size, and get shooting. Unless you already have very definite requirements or preferences, any camera can make you happy.

Man u hav a new fan...i love ur reviews, those finer details are very much appreciated...may I ask though, which camera would you suggest for me..the x100t or is the xt1 a better choice....planning to use it primarily for vacations, travel, street and the likes...x100t is what im preferably leaning on cause it fits my purpose but the thing is it is not interchangeable nd weatherproofed...been a canon dslr user I tend to use more often my wide angle lens w/ my 5d, I have great results but the agony in each shoot is frustrating....hoping for ur response sir, thanx
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
gen gerona So, without knowing too much about you, I'd say that either is a good choice - but the fact that you're interested in the X-T1, means that's probably the direction I'd provide. The Sony is a little generic, the Fuji has somewhat more personality and interchangeable lenses. My advice though is to choose the camera that excites you enough that you'll never leave it at home, that makes you want to go out and take photos and you're proud to be seen with - that's the best camera for you.
@chupacabra0809 жыл бұрын
***** hello sir, thanx for the response...i have not held either of the two and that is why i'm still in search of some good insights from other photogs...been digging some time into reviews and 1 photog happened to mention and compared both cameras, not so into details but he stated in his blog that the image quality of the two is at par or might slightly vary, depending on what lens used on xt1...AF also was pointed out that the x100t has the edge due to the fact that it is built in and is practically optimised to for the body...and the ND filter, my eye opener, which gives me versatility with regards to situations when shooting indoor to outdoor...my thoughts though sir, as you have mention....what camera do you use most often when ur on travel and is out in the road wandering around capturing the moment....(pardon me for my '...' just a txting habbit sir)
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
gen gerona My apologies for the above - somehow, I read RX100 instead of X100 ... My understanding is that AF is much improved over my experience with the new firmware. If it's anything like the X-T10 (I am preparing the review this month) after a few days, I'm impressed. I own a Sony A6000, which I take with me for travel, but there's nearly always another camera that I'm reviewing. I've taken an RX100 on our cycling holidays for the last few years - it's so small and portable and in spite of a smaller sensor, takes spectacular pictures. You may wish to wait for the review of the X-T10 ...

***** hello sir...been away for awhile, so sorry for the late reply...sorry to disappoint you sir but had a bad experience with sony cameras and been putting it off in my list...went ahead and purchase fuji x100t...tried the xt1 and xt10 for some time when our ship went to japan...but there is something with the x100t that can't take my hands off with it...plenty of options right on your finger tips...the lens might be a bit limiting..but it suits my needs, so no complaints there...been travelling for quite some time (due to work) and to be honest bringing all my gear is quite stressful...thanx again sir for the help and the time spent...hope to see more of your wonderful videos..

Hey Maarten, a quick question for you. I have an a6000, and its a great camera, but I cannot really get into the feel of it. Idon't really enjoy having to navigate through so many menus. I was thinking about selling it soon and picking up an X-T1. I saw that you had experience with the a6000 also. How does this camera hold up against the a6000? I really like the physical dials on this camera, the weather sealing is also great to have. The Viewfinder in this camera seems to be top of the line right now also. The only think I was worried about was losing the auto focus, even thought I don don't necessarily need the fastest autofocus on the market. The image quality of this Fuji seems to also be a bit more precise too. Thanks Marten. Keep up the great videos.
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
Brandon Sekoski Thanks for the kind words. Agreed that the Fuji is a better choice for old-school manual photo control - but overall, the menu systems are just different, didn't find one better than the other. You're right to pick the viewfinder on the Fuji, it really is superior. I complained about Fuji's focus, but I understand that a firmware upgrade has improved it. I'm not sure there's a quality difference, but that's not really my area of expertise - look to dpreview, or dxo for that. It's personal preference - I wouldn't be unhappy with either.

+Kyle Stevens I said "If you're a serious photographer, Fuji might not be your first choice ..." by which I meant that it might not be the first brand to come to mind. And while it is a fully capable camera with great features and manual controls, I would not put it in a "pro" class. Hello Maarten and thanks for the review. I have just one doubt about shooting when i have my eyes on the EVF. I know aperture dials are on lens and shutter on body buy seems to be difficult to move them looking thru the viewfinder. Do you know if i can move them using the front and back dials and have this info on the evf instead of using the two hand way of moving them thru body and lens? I hope i a have been clear with my question. Thanks in advance for your help!
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
+Demián Serafino Thanks for the kind words. Rather than shooting in full manual, I would recommend you use either the aperture priority or shutter priority mode - depending on the scene (shutter for fast action, otherwise aperture). Then you only have one control to worry about. Otherwise, your settings should be fairly close from shot to shot (as opposed to scene to scene), so using the front dial to make fine shutter adjustments could be sufficient. I hope this helps.

Rami Arafa I have the feeling I'm misunderstanding your question - the X-T1 offers full manual control of exposure: shutter speed (as slow as bulb), aperture (to the extent the lens offers) and ISO. Although you may require ND in bright settings, that should give you the control you need to do all kinds of time/long exposures. I hope this helps.

16MP is the only short straw here...if it had a 24MP sensor I'd buy one without hesitation. Not because 24MP would offer better image quality, but because it would offer so much more in the way of crop options. I'll stick with the X100T as my go to compact for now and upgrade when the XT-2 eventually turns up.

Zatzkes? Your funny! Anyhow I got one 1/2 a year ago and overall I love it . Two questions...1. Given the fact it only has 2 stops of compensation , what is the relation between that and the lack of (visually betw. images)differences in any of the auto bracketing modes? and 2.Some one (in a different review)wrote that on the wifi app one can extend bracketing to +/-3...is that true?
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
tscholent Two answers. I don't believe there's any relation. Of course, if you want more than 2 stops, go to manual mode - EV adjustment, which is only available when you're not in manual, is kind of a cop-out in my mind - particularly on this highly manual camera. 2) I know that Sony has downloadable apps with advanced bracketing (and some cameras now have bracketing that takes from 3 shot to 7 with EV ranges from 1/3 to a full stop) Fuji does not (yet) have apps. (Tchotchkes is how I spell it. In my home, zatzkes are a kind of cookie and one of the few words you can enter into google that doesn't have at least ten hits :-) Emmes. And thanks, I've asked to be re-incarnated as a standup comedian.

+Maarten Heilbron Should we take into account the difference in sensor size? (FF vs APS-C). Great review BTW, i just subscribed. Thanks. Rick.
@MaartenHeilbron9 жыл бұрын
+RickBSO Thanks for the kind words - I'm not sure that sensor size from APS-C to FF makes a lot of difference for the majority of images. Professionals providing product shots, magazine photography and bridal portraits will disagree.

Great review Maarten! Are you going to review the X-T2?

I appreciate the kind words. It is, or has been in progress since July. Love the camera, can't seem to get to finish the video.

Sounds great Maarten! I look forward to seeing your review. I love Fuji Cameras, but for me, they have lagged in the area of quick focusing capabilities.

In that case, you will be impressed by the X-T2

Thanks for this great video, I have only one question regarding new FW4 AF modes. In either Zone or Wide/Tracking modes, When half-pressing shutter release, sometime several autofocus points (green boxes) are highlighted in green showing they achieved focus - my question is: which one of those boxes the camera is actually locking into for the exposure ? Sometimes there will be several boxes highlighted in a zone or wide/tracking - some will lock on objects in the front and some locked on objects in the rear - when I fully press the shutter release - which of those boxes is actually used by the camera as the focus point ? Couldn't find explanation for this in all Fuji manuals
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
It's typically the closest object that's the focus point. When multiple boxes appear, it's my impression that they're all in the same focus plane, which (depending on aperture) may be wide or shallow. Does that help, or ???
@alon32328 жыл бұрын
Thanks - but I have seen cases even in Fuji own videos that clearly show (the famous train tracking video) that show different distance parts of the train highlighted by green boxes so it cant be all boxes are on the same distance from the camera - the only explanation might be that the closest of the boxes is used
@MaartenHeilbron8 жыл бұрын
I can check with Fuji, but I'm pretty sure that all the boxes are within the focus plane.

Year is 2017 and does Fuji XT1 still hold strong?. Pls suggest
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
That was fast. Yes, except in terms of autofocus. Fuji has made dramatic improvement to their focus engine that for me would make the upgrade to the X-Pro2, X-T2 or X-T20 worth it.

YES!!

Not sure what you're "yessing" here, but the X-T2 is a superior camera, particularly where focus is concerned.

Nice video. 11:30 Dirty sensor?
@MaartenHeilbron10 жыл бұрын
Olivier Thanks. Yes, it's an issue with cameras in a vendor's loaner pool. The camera's sensor cleaning didn't get it and although I used the Lenspen sensorklear loupe, I never want to be too aggressive.

Do you think it's suitable to buy a X-T1 today ,or X-Pro 1 ,thank you sir
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
The price would have to be very good for the X-T1, as the X-T2 represented a major advance in video. The X-Pro1 remains interesting for its hybrid viewfinder, but unless that's an attraction to you, it's no longer a great choice.

Thank you for one of the best reviews I have seen on this camera. And I thought I had seen all of them. Like your review, I have not seen one good review on the video. I do not use video, so doesn't bother me, If I were interested in shooting video, I would get a video camera. :)

What would be better, the xt1 or the a6000? (Don't mind the video features)
@MaartenHeilbron10 жыл бұрын
Fabrizio Arena I wish I could l provide a simple answer, but I find it very difficult to recommend a specific camera to a specific person without a detailed understanding of their needs, abilities, expectations and aesthetics. In addition, it's a very personal decision. There are lots of good reviews available for both - but I also recommend you go visit your local camera store and talk to the staff, hold the models in your hand and maybe take a few sample pictures. Good Luck!

Purple Rain Oh dear, I've returned the X-T1, so don't have the ability to step through it and provide guidance. In my experience this feature is inevitably somewhat flaky (as is NFC) and that's true in all manufacturer's implementations. Good luck.

Interesting final point... ”If you’re serious about photography, Fuji might not be your first choice..”
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
You are taking this slightly out of context ... I was suggesting that Fuji might not come to mind as quickly as other brands. And if there was any doubt about Fuji's intention with the X-T1, may I present the X-T2.

Fantastic review of a complicated system showing plenty of example pictures and videos. God, what's with Fuji putting that lousy fluctuating video focus during video mode. Fuji should be embarrassed to include video with that focus flaw on a ~$1200 camera!!! A firmware update should be inorder to fix that.

They added video functionality to this model, I think there could be some expectations that it support a minimum level of functionality.
