My trusty Mac 335 chainsaw that I purchased second-hand on eBay for $100 stopped sending oil to the chain. Rather than abandon her, I decided to fix the fault.
I understand the same pump system is used in the Mac 338, 435, 436, 438, 440 and 442 chainsaws.
Here is how to get the pump and download the Parts List and Assembly diagrams in PDF format:

Like you I bought one of these 2nd hand something like 10+yrs ago. I did put a new bar and chain on it back then. The bar is still going and have replaced the Stihl chain as it broke a year ago. Got the shop to repair the break and this chain is now a backup. Am in the process of replacing the drum and spindle bearing. Overall I reckon its been an awesome saw and I've learnt a lot about this chainsaw while doing my own repairs and maintenance over the years. Note for others, parts for these saws now are a Husqvarna 142, 137 parts from my experience so far. If I could buy another one of these, I would.

Mac-335 is exact copy of Partner-351/371/391 (or Poulan-2250/2450/2550) - body color and labels are the only difference. So you can use equivalent parts (for example - starter, ignition coil, carburetor, filters, clutch, clutch cover with chain brake, oil pump, crankshaft bearings/seals, etc.) from these chainsaws.

Thanks for doing the video. It got my chainsaw fixed and back in use. I used a spanner off an angle grinder to undo the LH treaded clutch.

One point, there's a groove on the crankshaft that the spring clips into to set the correct position. My drive spring had jumped out the groove so was not turning the pump. The pump was OK, it was the spring that had failed after 20 years! Thanks for the video.

Many thanks Tommy. My pump defo "Gave up the ghost" too. You saved me a lot of time figuring it out AND great tip with the plumber's spanner - I was trying to use an adjustable grinder disk remover wrench. I don't like jamming the piston with string tbh because of dirt and the risk of bending the con rod, I would PREFER to have two locking nuts at the other end of the crank shaft (ie where the pull string operates).

Thanks for posting this. With regards to tensioning, if it's like my Mac Cat then you hold the bar up as far as it will go whilst adjusting the tension screw, then tighten the nuts whilst still holding the bar up.

thanks Tom - i have a similar problem on a 338 which i can now resolve thanks to your video. i did find that jambing a screwdriver into the cooling fan blades was easier than trying the prevent the piston from moving - with the same results.

Hi just found this video, I replaced one of these today but in the kit came a new spring so I fitted that, I was a bit concerned as you can’t really tell if the spring is spaced correctly, but I got it back together and it does pump oil, so I take it it must be ok. I’m not keen on the design but it works and the parts were dirt cheap. Good video🙂👍

Thanks for the vid found it really useful , :-) My oil pump was full of gunge ,i stripped it down to clean it now its as good as new .. to get the clutch off i used a old spanner that fitted the recesses then gripped the spanner with an adjustable spanner..

Rather than using the rope trick to stop the engine rotating when removing the clutch assembly, take off the recoil starter cover (4 screws) and use a 13mm socket/spanner to hold the other end of the crankshaft. The front handle offers a way to stop the spanner moving.

believe it or not most oil pumps break like that because someone forgets to fill the chain oil. So when you put gas in a chainsaw you always put chain oil in it same time. By the way that clutch will tighten up automatically, so when you start it and start using the chainsaw it'll tighten up. so don't worry about that being really tight. If you don't have a spanner wrench I've used a screwdriver and a hammer, (in the little holes) doing that may put some nicks on your clutch but just as long as you don't whack it really hard, it'll loosen up and won't hurt anything.

Hi, hole at front of tank is for lower screw to mount the bumper spike / dog. A cut to size 5.5 mm dec (Drill-Dex)5/16th hex head, coarse self tap thread screw makes a good substitute. Short enough to NOT penetrate the oil tank wall.

Hi, problem is people using dirty engine oil due to poverty or not cleaning around filler cap prior to opening to fill. best is to brush crap out and fill from clean container will chain oil.

@@Daniel-vw4sr you can just get a new carb on ebay for a mac335 for less than a tenner (make sure you buy from a seller that has uk stock, turns up in 2 or 3 days), they're not worth farting about with cleaning them out etc, running for a couple secs and cutting out is usually a knackered diaphram. just get new carb and tune it. get new fuel hoses too, they're usually knackered too and split when you start messing with em.

@@Daniel-vw4sr I would look to buy some carb cleaner from your local car parts supplier or ebay (with a new gasket kit) and clean the carb up. My carb is fine but if it blocks up then I will add a video np.
