Mark - don´t let these who complain change your ideas about your channel! Others on YTPC stick to just the tobacco reweiw. I love your style and your combinations of different subjects. You have a unic consept. Stick to what you like to do. And aging does that to us, doesn´t it, you are more and more into doing what really matters to you. I had my 60´s birthday this year and your inspiration had me buy a meerschum. I love it and and also Mac Barens curlys. Enjoyed some Club Blend to your video. Take care. Be well. Hope to see you again!

Skip? No way Mark! You're always interesting to listen to and we all go through the same process you described when we reach a milestone. We must be able to look back at what we did to figure out where we're going but since you're a history teacher, you already figured that out a long time ago. I also love Mac Baren blends and their coins cut in particular, such as Stockton, Roll Cake and Dark Twist. Good stuff.

I Hope you had a pleasant birthday. My own birthday was a week or so ago, too, but I turned 70. The fences you describe are all closer for me than they are for you, but I have decided to not worry about it. I plan to be around for another 25 or 30 years, and I just think about everything I accomplished during my first 25 or 30 years when I feel low. I have less energy now but more experience and skill at life, so I expect to be able to at least match my younger self's output. Look toward the horizon and dig in. Your best times are still ahead.

Mark, I too have already “crossed the fence”. I wish I’d seen this video sooner but it is what it is. Well needed stories for a newbie pipe smoker with only two years experience.Very inspirational! If I ever decide to add to the YTPC video monologue it will likely be because of you and John (Matches 860) 🎉but sadly I was late and never able to respond to John. You’re all Beautiful people in my view. Thank you Sir.

Grüss Gott Mark, well thank you for telling about the history of the famous city of Bremen DE, briefly, all this reminds very much of what was happening in the city where i live, one of the main import &export port cities in Finland (Kotka-Adler in southeast )also thank for representing Mc Baren products, I must admit this company is one of the best in the world, all their tobaccies are impeccable, great quality, admittedly some of their offerings has a tendency to bite somewhat but at the meantime, those teach smokers to watch for cadence and take it slower,my favorite amongst their roll cakes is Dark twist and Stockton, now I know how to find out production year as well, thanks , Ok, alles bestens ,all the best , Paul

Always a pleasure to smoke a bowl and watch one of your videos. The story of Bremen's recent history has close parallels with the story here in North East England also once known for ship building and industry, all of which has pretty much disappeared now. I also had a similar birthday experience, turning 21 in 1992 during the third week of Army basic training. My birthday present was being covered in boot polish, not as nice as getting to the head of the breakfast queue 😂.

When you find time to make them in your busy life, I think we all appreciate it... and I think you speak for many of us around the world, who are experiencing our home areas crumbling for reasons far out of our control. A very heart-felt "Thank You" for producing this video. Nice to know that you're still well. At this particular time in history we all know of too many folks who will never get the chance to analyze fences at age 50. Speaking as one who proudly wears a "Codgers" cap, I can only guess and hope that a time will finally come when all your tobaccos will be aged quite enough, and all will be enjoyed simply as they are, with no judgement of any kind, and with absolutely no regrets.

Hi Mark, I have watched this again to decide if I should try this blend. Great video and research into the roll cake. Maybe when Syrian ran out of supply they changed the recipe, maybe put Perique in and took it out again because of supply and cost perhaps. If there is Dark fired in there, it would give some spice anyway, alright, if they do it better that way. Who knows, I won't ever know what the old recipe is like but if the new one is good, well thats alright too. Cheers, thanks for your great videos and always worth having a bowl while im watch.

HA!!! I was in the USMC, in boot camp we had one guy who was born on the 4th of July. His mother sent in a box of cookies, candy and cake that was enough to feed our whole platoon. KEEP IN MIND... the Sr. Drill Instructor in the USMC wears a patent leather belt, the Jr. Drill Instructors wear a green web belt... The Sr. DI is mean... but NOT AS mean as the Jr.'s. USMC/ military terms... Pogue - is a Marine that is not in a combat MOS. Poguey Bait - Term used for junk food or other such items to get a favor from a rear echelon/non combat MOS Marine. MOS - Military Occupational Specialty (Your job). HEAD - Bathroom. So mail call came up and the Sr. DI was handing out mail and saved that big box for last. He said..."Recruit Ellington!! WTF is in this box"? He opened it and it was full of what we in the USMC called "Poguey bait". The Sr. DI said "OH... Let's all just wish Recruit Ellington a happy f*cking Birthday!!.. SING. So of course we all sang Happy Birthday to you...... Then the Sr. said "Recruit Ellington, hand out the poguey bait, make sure everyone in the platoon gets something, you have 10 minutes to hand all that trash out an eat it. I want it all gone by the time I get back". For some reason, I knew he was being to nice, by DI standards anyway. Sure enough, the Sr. DI comes out of the duty hut wearing his Jr. Belt. His face always turned red when he was in his "angry mode" he was good at that. He then yelled at us... "GET UP ON LINE!!!" "GRAB YOUR CANTEENS NOW MOVE!!!" UNCAP YOUR CANTEEN AND DRINK!!! GRAB YOUR OTHER CANTEEN NOW MOVE!!! DRINK THAT F*CKER DOWN!!! ATTACK THE HEAD!!! FILL THE CANTEENS, GET UP ONLINE!!! DRINK!!! This went on 3 times... then he made us do sit ups and push ups, run in place, leg lifts etc. Then he made us down the last canteen.... By this time many of us were puking. Then he said "See what that Poguey Bait will do to you?!? Now clean up my squad bay!! That was over 32 years ago. I don't think they are allowed to do that anymore.

Hello Mark hope all is well. This was a great video it touched upon exactly what I was thinking. If Tobacco is always in a state of change very similar to grapes due to its varying sugar content, it’s almost impossible for a tobacco 2 years ago to taste the same as one purchased today. In my mind then, casings are used to nudge the tobacco back to a known acceptable “standard” but if this is done chemically it can’t ever be the same. My point is, we probably shouldn’t expect consistency in good tobaccos over the years because it’s organically in constant flux. Cheap tobaccos are probably more consistent because they likely use more casing to keep them consistent? Anyway, it makes sense to me, you dig deeper than most and why your videos are excellent - take care - Rob.

I have a tin purchased in Miami, FL from 2009 and a tin purchased in Orlando, FL from 2017. Both have the same description which doesn't mention casing but does say "top flavour has been added." Both tins also have month and date stamps on them as "MAY2009" and "DEC2017." As for the phrase top flavour, the incorrect English grammar elsewhere in the description leads me to believe it is just a bad translation. I couldn't tell the difference when I smoked the two tins but 8 years had passed in between. Great birthday story. Growing up in south Florida with the year round hot weather there was a saying that living here was "an endless summer." I liked that saying, but as I got older I realized it had lulled myself and others into thinking we had more time available.. I started things in life slower than I should have and next thing you know I'm 40 and those horizon fences you spoke of have started popping up. -Tim

Happy B- Day Mark! Enjoy your day my friend. I do have a question. You mentioned your story when you were in the Military. Do young men have to join and give so many years of Military service at a certain age in Germany? Or is it on a volunteer type basis to sign up for military service. I really enjoy your videos and the history you show us. Very well done Mark. Be safe my friend.
