Alright Stevie I'm gonna try to break this down the best I can, I feel like I'm about to write an essay. But... For some context, you right, Mac died less than a few months after this project came out. Swimming came out the same day as Astroworld and in hindsight was largely overshadowed by the popularity of Astroworld. Around this time, Mac had freshly broken up with Arianna Grande (some speculate because of his drug addiction), he had a DUI which he referred to in this song with the Mercedes speeding line , Arianna Grande n Mac seemed like a cool couple, n she was the type to "set him straight" or keep him grounded with the drug use. Ultimately, the public don't know how good or bad their relationship was, but it always seemed genuine. Before, during, and after their dating time, Mac was heavy into drugs, but he had moments of sobriety especially while he was dating her. When Mac first came out with Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza, Mac's style of music was like frat rap, weed smoking teenage kid who can clearly rap. Very quickly, dude evolved musically and lyrically. Best Day Ever is the mixtape where his big commercial hit "Donald Trump" came from, that song put dude on a rocket ship for his career. Soon after that. with money/fame/life shit, dude started getting heavy into other drugs besides weed n alcohol. Dude started getting heavy into lean around the time he made his mixtape "Macadelic" which is the project for me personally that got me really into Mac Miller. He actually has a song with Lil Wayne on that project that I know you'll love called The Question. Watching Movies with the Sound Off and GO:OD AM are good starting points to listen to Mac. By the time The Devine Feminine came out, it kind of signified a musical turning point in Mac's career. The Devine Feminine is groovy as fuck. Swimming and Circles are some of his best projects in my eyes. Mac Miller is notoriously known as a workaholic when it comes to his art. Dude has projects upon projects and hundreds of songs of unreleased material. Mixtapes, side projects, unreleased collaborations with lots of people. He has projects that are available under other names like Larry Fisherman or Delusional Thomas or Larry Lovestein. These names are like "alter egos" for Mac, where he made different types of music that wouldn't fall under his Mac Miller name. Dude produced a lot of his own shit. Made beats for himself and others. And was generally really hands on with his art. This music video to the song is like a metaphor for fucking up his own life to the point where he's buried alive, being able to break free from the shit that was keeping him buried, he emerges from the grave triumphantly as if he's conquered his personal demons, but moments later an explosion happens to kind of symbolize another hurdle in life (relapse with drugs maybe?) A lot of fans say that Mac's best project was his mixtape "Faces" which was made at probably his worst state of drug addiction. You can hear in his music on Faces that dude was in a bad place. Faces came out 4 years prior to Swimming. In my opinion, each project Mac came out with is better than the last. He became more artistic, more lyrical, more introspective with each project. So IMO, Swimming was his best project. But I have no doubt you'll enjoy his projects. If I were to dive into Mac Miller, I'd personally start with Watching Movies with the Sound Off. But there's no particular order you NEED to listen to, but just know that the more recent projects are more "musical and soulful" than something like Watching Movies. So going back to the Swimming time period, Swimming is a concept album. The theme to Swimming is believed to be about metaphorically drowning then learning how to swim to be able to cope with the demons in his life. Overall Stevie, I think you're gonna really enjoy listening to Mac Miller. Dude had so much soul and was so loved within the industry. When he died, soooo many artists showed him love n appreciation, n IMO he's one of the examples of an artist or a person that deserved to get his flowers while he was here, and unfortunately I don't think he got those flowers enough while he WAS here. Mac Miller actually took Kendrick n TDE on tour with him, can you believe that? At the time, Mac was taking THEM out on tour lol. Dude was big and he was generous with his time. He wasn't the hating type. He did his thing, he helped a LOT of artists in his time. He was one of the real ones in the industry.

FINALLY STEVIE!....Mac Miller been criminally underrated his whole career. Dude really advanced his style from his early "frat rap" stuff that some people liked, but each project after his first, his artistry and skills advanced exponentially. In rapping and in production/composition. Dude was so hands on with his music. Played multiple instruments. Made his own beats and other rappers beats. This dude Mac famously had a tweet from Jay-Z framed in his house from Twitter cosigning him saying he's nice. When you get a cosign from Jay Z, we all know how big that was. The thing I think you'll appreciate from Mac is his honesty in his music. He put his heart into his lyrics, he let us fans know where he was at in his life at the time he made his music. There's so many songs I could suggest, depends what you wanna hear, if you want some hip hop shit, check out the song Diablo or Programs. If you want something more musical/soulful, Stay from his project The Devine Feminine is great. Rush Hour from Watching Movies with the Sound Off is one of my favorites. IMO Mac Miller is an artist that it's best to hear his entire projects. Album listens/reviews would serve him justice because his entire projects are fire. Sure you can pluck songs out of his catalogue, but his projects are best digested in whole amounts. Regardless bruh, I'm a fan of all of your reactions. You have some great takes and opinions and I know you love the bars, Mac Miller has a lot of gold in his discography. Hope you react to him A LOT more.

The lyrics to the outro of this song took on a whole new meaning for me when he passed. "I got all the time in the world / But for now I'm just chillin' / Plus I know it's a beautiful feeling... in oblivion". Like damn, if you think of death as some type of "oblivion" and consider how sad and tormented Mac seemed to have felt for much of his life, hence the heavy drug use and a lot of the demons he rapped about, the outro lyrics of this song just blow my mind knowing what the unfortunate circumstances that befell Mac ended up being with his passing. Thinking of death in his case as possibly representing some level of "peace" from these constant demons, or a "beautiful thing" in the sense that now he can finally actually rest. Just my take on the new/different meaning those outro lyrics took on for me in the context of his passing. RIP Mac.

Mac was trying to tell us something we all knew but didn't want to acknowledge, that's why he is so relatable to me. Listen to the album Circles. Swimming, then Circles. Good News and the title track Circles are my faves right now. I have two of the clear copies on vinyl and one of the white copies for a total of three.

I always understood it as a song about a wake up call. Oblivion references his darker days, drug abuse, bad relationship, bad habits; although it ain't good for him he loves the feeling. He realizes that he can take his time and enjoy his life clean knowing that the dark side that awaits him is fine with him. Check out hia song 2008 and keep it up Stevie!

Hes got music for every mood bro, please continue on this journey. I just feel like if you start from the beginning and go in chronological order, you will appreciate his evolution even more. Mac was evolving. And the process he went through is amazing. I feel very sad w lost him. He was one of the few artists I cried for and I never met him. He had that energy. And he will always live forever

Just wanted to take a second of time to thank you Mr. Knight. Been watching you for a while after I found you breaking down bars on a eminem track that no other reactor out there had done yet. I enjoyed your review so much that I subscribed and I make show to watch the reaction videos of songs that I already love. You do an excellent job on all of them. Nobody else on YT catches as many bars as you do, let alone the depth you break them down to. As a white man from Michigan who has always enjoyed and respected the skill and art that is Rhythm And Poetry (RAP). It's a shame that its lost on so many people. Just wanted to show love and appreciation bro. Never change, my brother.

Mac Miller so underrated, people are so quick to label him a rapper. Which he is but he's so much more then that. He probably doesn't make my top 100 rappers. But he is my favorite music artist. Swimming and circles are on repeat for me.

Watching this that music video and knowing the songs meaning just hits in such a deep way. It's like he wrote down exactly how it was all going to happen and unfortunately it did.

Looking forward to more people reacting to Mac. He was someone I grew up listening to so its crazy to me that people haven't heard much of him. You'll see how incredible he was. True musical talent, from beats to the lyrics, he was goated.

Mac was like a friend too me, I never viewed him as an in your face lyricist but he hid his meanings very well, im just now discovering what he was truly trying to tell us. He was always more of a true artist in every since of the word. Theres so much out there and if you do more I hope you can join us on this trip. The energy he put out in the world was truly one of a kind. If you have some time and want some context check out his interview with Larry King, he says alot. Wish I could of met him, I know he's in a better place now, free from all the earthly troubles he faced... in oblivion. Self care really hits different now. My current list of songs im bumping from him are wings, conversations and hurt feelings will show you his creativity, vitamins and fight the feeling are a vibe that can't be matched. Stay is the one I consider as his peak of artist a true dance with music, all of blue slide park and kids are super fun songs. Objects in the mirror and watching movies are fantastic. Friends from the faces projects will show you his how deep his problems with drugs got. Perfect circle/godspeed, break the law, and weekend are some true rap songs. Diablo if you want straight bars. The whole Circles projecg is just different.

You're definitely right about needing to know about mac to get the context. Mac went through many phases, huge ups and downs. His catalouge as a whole is quite breath taking.

Love the reaction bro. Mac was such an underrated and under appreciated artist. Super talented. Can play multiple instruments. Listening to his catalog will take you on a journey from a high school kid to an adult with serious issues and he wasn’t scared to share it. So many great jams. The companion album to swimming called circles released last year and he just takes it to a whole other place. The vibe the self reflection, so personal and it’s not easy to do what he did on circles it doesn’t really have any bangers per say. It’s just a solid self reflective album. A journey.

Just subbed! Always looking for new Mac reactions. Also, when you said it’s not good to be in oblivion, and you need to come back, funny enough the first song on this album, swimming, that track is called “come back to earth”. These themes of being lost and coming back to reality and treading water instead of drowning are frequent throughout this album. Great reaction and insight, I highly recommend jet fuel by Mac from this same album, it’s dope!

‘Circles’ is another good one by Mac. Reminds me of Johnny cash strumming on his guitar in his last years. ‘Circles’ is the first song the album, also titled circles. Swimming in Circles was the concept between the two albums
