Great breakdown of these two computers. One thing I am curious about is your current FCP library and media management. I believe you showed your using a Synology Server before for footage. I am curious about your work flow with it since I tend to just use my synology as a final file/footage dump. Thanks for another great video.

Yeah I use synology for my final dump. Edit off SSD and use a slower drive as backup. Once a project is done I move it to my server. I do individual FCPX projects per video.

I got the M1 Mini with 16g upgrade and 256g SSD. I also purchased a Satechi hub to have some extra ports on the front and an external HD for backup. Highly recommend the hub...really helpful. My first Mac OS based desktop and so far I’m loving it...still learning Mac OS but not that bad of a transition from Windows.

Wowah! Thank you beyond for your amazing input on this subject! i have been pondering this exact same scenario...as to whether I should buy the MacBook 16 in. or the Mac Mini! Everything you are presenting here is concise and logical and not just from your own needs perspective...even though you said in some parts that certain things work for you and that those things were some of the reasons you went with the Mac Mini, because you also point out how both your needs and other features are why a person should also consider getting the Mac Mini! You’re Fan-friggin-tastic, I say! Fan-friggin-tastic! And THANK YOU! ✨🎁💜🔑🪶🤗⌨️🖱💻🖥🎥🎞📺

Nice quick overview. Amazing that we've become so accustomed to seeing jump cuts that trimming out takes (and maybe a few big breaths :) is reasonably transparent. Agree on path of least resistance. Many of us are artists at heart who had to become technologists simply to free the mind. Less tech = more art. Gotta upgrade our Macs this year and hate the high costs of the Apple eco system. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on how price and performance are narrowing so we can buy such fast user friendly systems at less cost. 😊

I use a T7 with my imac. I Clamp it to the imac's aluminum back stand with a couple spring loaded wood clamps. Use a robust thunderbolt cable and you should have no issue with drive failure. That heat has to have someplace to transfer out of the drive relatively quickly and the aluminum stand does a great job. I always look forward to your reviews and insights.

I love the Mac Mini! Mine is late 2012 with 12 GB ram and use it to run my live rig (I’m a musician) with Mainstage and it outperforms my MacBook Pro by far. So compact I can mount it under my keyboard and use my iPad as a monitor on stage. I know I’ll have to upgrade the mini in the next year or two but relieved it won’t cost that much for even better performance than I already have.

My custom-config Mini arrived 3 days ago. I at first hesitated to use it as my main machine immediately because the native driver for my drawing tablet isn't available yet. I then took a chance to see if that works under Rosetta 2 and to my HUGE surprise it WORKS! The tablet with the Intel-driver works with BOTH native and intel apps. I am actually impressed. Yesterday I moved it into my main desk and my trash can™ has moved to the shelf as a backup machine. Final Cut really does fly on the M1. 1/3 real time export (vs 2.5X real time of the trash can) is such a drastic boost in efficiency. And not to mention the power consumption of the M1 Mini at full blast is still LOWER than my trash can™ when sitting IDLE. It has one problem so far. It wakes itself up from sleep very easily and I am still looking at if it's because of bluetooth or USB devices.

Great reveal at the beginning loved that. I got the base model M1 to replace my PC for everyday use and so far I haven't regretted it. There are some photo editing apps (Topaz Labs) that don't work very well right now but once they are optimized I am sure it will work really well. Final Cut on this thing is insane like you said. I have been a PC. user since MSDOS 1.0 but I am loving the Mac Mini so far. Thanks for the well done video! Cheers.

the M1 is TRASH i spent $1400.00 on something that can not handle large files. I use my pc for mainly family related stuff and music and from day one this piece of CRAP has proven beyond all doubt that it indeed belong in the TRASH I can not use mine until Apple fixes the problem which they will not even admit they have. I have lost hundreds of family pictures just gone nowhere to be found, pictures around it are there just random loss, my music file change data randomly also, some music will play one day and not the next then play a few days latter.

I am having problems with my M1MM, when I connect a external NVME over usb-c the whole machine slows down and is very very laggy!!! As soon as I remove or plug it in to usb-a then everything is back to normal.... weird.

I have the 16gb M1 Mac mini. Love it! I have been using handbrake for the last two hours compressing old footage. 80gb files down to nothing. It’s so fast, blows me away. Handbrake is the M1 build.

Why transcode again on handbrake ? The files directly work with m1, 10 bit files

Well, these were old ninja v files or 10bit Gh5 files for projects that have long been done. I should just delete them as I doubt I will ever go back to them. As a matter of fact since I stated that, I did delete a lot of them yesterday. These are from early 2020 when I was doing work for the church, during lock down. Those atomos ninja v files were huge. But they edited so easily. Prores is definitely the way to go.

Good video. Straight for and informative. I've heard about the mac mini and been considering getting one because I have a 3rd screen just taking up space. It'll be for the sole purpose of finally getting my hands on and in "Final Cut Pro". Thanks.

@JavenDovey Thanks for this video! just waiting for my mac mini 16 gb 1tb. I also used the Color Finale. Since it isn't compatible with silicon, what program did you change it for color grading?
