I got the M1 Mac Mini a little under a year ago and it’s been such a great investment. After using Windows laptops since college (and now for work) having a solid Apple desktop for my personal machine was refreshing. Aside from day to day, I record, edit and export audio for a podcast and it’s always ran buttery smooth. Aside from the audio software, I usually have a trillion tabs open on Safari, Spotify and all kinds of other things running and I’ve never noticed slow-down. Good info/video. Envious of the desk setup, my kids would steal that Mandalorian lego statue before my morning coffee. Cheers

I have a Late 2012 Mac mini that I upgraded with 16GB ram and 1TB SSD. I used Open Core Legacy Patcher in order to make it accept MacOS 12.5 Monterey. I don’t do video rendering like you, but the machine is rock solid stable and perfect for me. It’s a shame Apple considers my machine to be obsolete because I use it productively for many hours everyday.

I know this is an old post but have you tried running Linux on it? I had a 2014 mac mini that I ran Ubuntu on after Apple stopped supporting it and it was much faster and more fluid than macOS on that older hardware. Of course, I didn't have imessage or any of those Apple specific things but for office work and browsing the web, it was perfect. I ended up gifting it to someone to use for that purpose.

@@Watchandlearn91 Hi Watch And Learn 91. No, I did not try running Linux on my Late 2012 Mac mini. As much as I loved UNIX scripting and the wonders of AWK and VI back in the days when I was an Oracle Database Administrator, I prefer to use MacOS on my home computer. Access to apps like Messages, Find My, Apple Music, etc., are requirements for me. Also, I have an iPhone, so synchronizing Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Passwords, etc., using iCloud are also essential. You're right that you were commenting on an old post. I have since upgraded to an M2 Pro Mac mini, and installed Windows 10 on the Late 2012 Mac mini. I keep it on a shelf just in case I one day require a Windows app in the future. The old Mac mini is only worth about $75 if I were to sell it, so I'm not going to bother.

Like some others commenting, I opted for 16g/1tb and was able to snag one from the Apple refurb store at a nice discount. As for the port location headache, I slapped the Satechi hub underneath it - voila, front-facing USB A & C ports, headphone jack, and SD card reader. Could have gone for base storage and slapped an SSD into the Satechi but wanted full speed so made the 1tb investment. Couldn't be happier. Replaced my aging 2015 27" iMac.

First of all a Mac is a PC(Personal Computer), running MacOS instead of Windows or Linux. I got the 16 Gb RAM and 1 Tb Storage option. 10Gb Ethernet was the Mini’s biggest selling point for me, so I got that as well. I still use my 27” Cinema Display that I bought refurbed in 2014, with a mini-DP to Thunderbolt adapter. The HDMI not being 2.1 just means I won’t spend as much on a 4K 32” display if the 27” I have fails.

I'm happy with my M1 Mini as well. Using it for 6 month now for basic graphic design stuff, a bit of blender and AE / daVinci. Everything works just fine ... almost... the only thing that bothers me, which not often but still regulary occures is a problem with system-memory using too much disc space. This sometimes leads to a situation where I'm not able to save open files (mostly Photoshop) anymore. It's a pain in the a... sometimes. From my experience a memory-upgrade to at least 500 GB (I have the base model 16BG/256 GBHD) ) would be a wise decision.

It was a nice explanation. I have bought M2 Mac Mini which was launched recently. I would use it for normal work (coding). Also I would like to attend my daily office calls. As Mac Mini do not have a microphone what are the better ways for audio input apart from using a 3.3mm headphone. Something wireless. I have Apple Airpods I can use that. But for long calls it's difficult to use it. Speakers it's fine. I can connect it to a bluetooth speaker or the speakers in my monitor are enough. IMO (opinion being key here,, there is no right or wrong answers to these things) - bump the RAM to 16gb, keep the small SSD and use an external drive along side it. Saves some of the cost. That's the key weakness of Apple. The base configurations of their M1 computers are compelling. But for anyone who needs more storage or memory (don't we all?), they gouge you on upgrades... and you have no ability to change your mind later. Great video. I wanted to ask how you handle your LR catalog on your mini? I just got a mini (8/256) and it’s main use will be photo editing. I’m coming from an old iMac that had 2TB’s, so I was okay doing everything locally, but after that, I would really like to keep my LR clean which is turns saves space on the 256. I got a Samsung T7 to store everything, only thing I’m going to have on this machine is the LR and PS app locally, nothing else. My idea for LR now is to kinda treat it like PS, once I’m done with my edits, I’ll delete them off the app, I don’t even want smart preview taking up cache/memory. Oh, one more thing if you don’t mind.. is it ok to leave me T7 plugged in all the time? The other day I noticed it was just a tad warm so I unplugged it. I need more Storage, as of now I cannot use studio...its blew up .Ill have to wipe it and start over regardless, but when I do, I want best use of fast enough external that I can save all I don't need on primary Mac Studio to and access thru Thunderbolt. Problem, I am an idot with computers. I was thinking is my question... I have the original Silicone M1 mini I'm thinking maybe fast enough and usable for that space to store as a external server basically to move any content like virtual instrument plugin content to and old projects to save. IS THAT A BAD IDEA.? I may need to get help and but a big SSD like mentioned in videos on this channel. Is that a bad idea? Ill have it if an issue arises with the Studio that may have a catastrophic fail that lead to finishing work on another device to finish in time. But is using that for an external memory even possible , and how. i am planning on buying the m1 mini before december, but would you recommend the cheapes version without bluetooth and wifi or would you say the build-in bluetooth antenna is decent enough, because i have heard a lot of people have been struggling with connectivity issues. and sinde i only use wired internet, i thought i might save some money just buying multi device mouse/keyboard set with a 2,4 ghz dongle instead.

I haven't had any connectivity issues - but just FYI every version has wifi6/bluetooth on the M1 Mac Mini.

@@KyleErickson Thanks for the reply, then i'll get the cheapest version, 8gb ram should be plenty for my needs :D

What are your thoughts about 8 vs 16 G of ram in the Mac Mini M1?
@KyleErickson2 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of folks who don't mind the 8GB option, and if you're not doing a whole lot with your computer I think it makes sense to consider. For myself, it's probably not enough, and if you're doing anything resource-heavy at all, you can stress out other components with virtual memory swapping as it hits the upper-end of the memory usage. All depends on how you use your machine.

But if you work with 3D then?

Thanks for your review... I've been eyeing the M1 Mac Mini as an upgrade from my 2012 Macbook Air for a year now... But I decide to keep waiting until the M2. It's still not released unfortunately on the Mini but for the MBA and MBP instead. What are your thoughts on them? I use LR and PS and some video work occasionally in 4k...

Combining this as my desktop PC and my iPad with the MK as my laptop has been great (yeah i know iPad isn’t really a laptop but it works like one, i don’t need mac os personally for a mobile device, so for web browsing, documents and some social media use is more than enough) experience tbh, plus being able to use sidecar when I’m home and want to be on bed is just perfectly enough for me.

What’s the deal on the new Mac mini?

Nothing yet - sounds like maybe October event with a new version, but we likely won’t know for sure until it’s announced officially
