I got the M1 Mac Mini a little under a year ago and it’s been such a great investment. After using Windows laptops since college (and now for work) having a solid Apple desktop for my personal machine was refreshing. Aside from day to day, I record, edit and export audio for a podcast and it’s always ran buttery smooth. Aside from the audio software, I usually have a trillion tabs open on Safari, Spotify and all kinds of other things running and I’ve never noticed slow-down. Good info/video. Envious of the desk setup, my kids would steal that Mandalorian lego statue before my morning coffee. Cheers

I have a Late 2012 Mac mini that I upgraded with 16GB ram and 1TB SSD. I used Open Core Legacy Patcher in order to make it accept MacOS 12.5 Monterey. I don’t do video rendering like you, but the machine is rock solid stable and perfect for me. It’s a shame Apple considers my machine to be obsolete because I use it productively for many hours everyday.

I know this is an old post but have you tried running Linux on it? I had a 2014 mac mini that I ran Ubuntu on after Apple stopped supporting it and it was much faster and more fluid than macOS on that older hardware. Of course, I didn't have imessage or any of those Apple specific things but for office work and browsing the web, it was perfect. I ended up gifting it to someone to use for that purpose.

@@Watchandlearn91 Hi Watch And Learn 91. No, I did not try running Linux on my Late 2012 Mac mini. As much as I loved UNIX scripting and the wonders of AWK and VI back in the days when I was an Oracle Database Administrator, I prefer to use MacOS on my home computer. Access to apps like Messages, Find My, Apple Music, etc., are requirements for me. Also, I have an iPhone, so synchronizing Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Passwords, etc., using iCloud are also essential. You're right that you were commenting on an old post. I have since upgraded to an M2 Pro Mac mini, and installed Windows 10 on the Late 2012 Mac mini. I keep it on a shelf just in case I one day require a Windows app in the future. The old Mac mini is only worth about $75 if I were to sell it, so I'm not going to bother.

Like some others commenting, I opted for 16g/1tb and was able to snag one from the Apple refurb store at a nice discount. As for the port location headache, I slapped the Satechi hub underneath it - voila, front-facing USB A & C ports, headphone jack, and SD card reader. Could have gone for base storage and slapped an SSD into the Satechi but wanted full speed so made the 1tb investment. Couldn't be happier. Replaced my aging 2015 27" iMac.

My daily machine is a Late 2012 Mac mini, purchased in 2015 and has 16Gb of ram and an extra internal SSD. The only moving part is the cooling fan, I bought a box of spare ones on eBay. Looking to replace it with -- another Mac mini! Thanks for the tips on external storage. About to clock in 7 years with this box, expect to get the same from the next one. A simple fan control app and regular backups are the only insurance I need.

First of all a Mac is a PC(Personal Computer), running MacOS instead of Windows or Linux. I got the 16 Gb RAM and 1 Tb Storage option. 10Gb Ethernet was the Mini’s biggest selling point for me, so I got that as well. I still use my 27” Cinema Display that I bought refurbed in 2014, with a mini-DP to Thunderbolt adapter. The HDMI not being 2.1 just means I won’t spend as much on a 4K 32” display if the 27” I have fails.

Have been using my M1 16 / 1TB for almost a year, having replaced a Mac Pro 5.1 six core. It is actually sightly faster and much smoother at FCP while using a tiny fraction of the power. I did have to get an OWC Thunderbay for my previously internal drives and a TB3>TB2 adaptor for a Thunderbolt Display

I'm happy with my M1 Mini as well. Using it for 6 month now for basic graphic design stuff, a bit of blender and AE / daVinci. Everything works just fine ... almost... the only thing that bothers me, which not often but still regulary occures is a problem with system-memory using too much disc space. This sometimes leads to a situation where I'm not able to save open files (mostly Photoshop) anymore. It's a pain in the a... sometimes. From my experience a memory-upgrade to at least 500 GB (I have the base model 16BG/256 GBHD) ) would be a wise decision.

auctually the m1 mini does have a max of 144 hrtz output at 2k and 4k 60 htz max you might get more at 4k if your monitor it self is capable of 100 + htz the mini should do better then 60 at 4k its not just the port version on the computer it also is the monitor and a good Cable never hurts either

I got a M1 Mac Mini 16GB/1TB through the Apple refurbished store. It's the best desktop machine I've ever had. It's super quiet and very powerful. The thing I hate most is my Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. I got it for the Touch ID, but I'm use to my Logitech Ergonomic keyboard. Having to enter my secure, lengthy password every time I unlock my Mac is tedious. I guess I need to try using my iPhone Face ID as an alternative so I can go back to my preferred keyboard. Fortunately, I haven't had any issue finding the headphone jack hole 🤣

It was a nice explanation. I have bought M2 Mac Mini which was launched recently. I would use it for normal work (coding). Also I would like to attend my daily office calls. As Mac Mini do not have a microphone what are the better ways for audio input apart from using a 3.3mm headphone. Something wireless. I have Apple Airpods I can use that. But for long calls it's difficult to use it. Speakers it's fine. I can connect it to a bluetooth speaker or the speakers in my monitor are enough. But not sure about he audio input (microphone) that I have to use for the calls.

IMO (opinion being key here,, there is no right or wrong answers to these things) - bump the RAM to 16gb, keep the small SSD and use an external drive along side it. Saves some of the cost. That's the key weakness of Apple. The base configurations of their M1 computers are compelling. But for anyone who needs more storage or memory (don't we all?), they gouge you on upgrades... and you have no ability to change your mind later. For video I want at least two internal drive PLUS an external. Can't do that with Apple. This keeps me recommending Windows machines.

Great video. I wanted to ask how you handle your LR catalog on your mini? I just got a mini (8/256) and it’s main use will be photo editing. I’m coming from an old iMac that had 2TB’s, so I was okay doing everything locally, but after that, I would really like to keep my LR clean which is turns saves space on the 256. I got a Samsung T7 to store everything, only thing I’m going to have on this machine is the LR and PS app locally, nothing else. My idea for LR now is to kinda treat it like PS, once I’m done with my edits, I’ll delete them off the app, I don’t even want smart preview taking up cache/memory. Oh, one more thing if you don’t mind.. is it ok to leave me T7 plugged in all the time? The other day I noticed it was just a tad warm so I unplugged it. I don’t have much experience with external ssd’s since I was just using a disk drive on my old computer. Thanks!

At this point in time, I’d rather wait for the coming new Mac Mini, hoping to get the new design and all longed for performance boosts.

I did send back my Mac mini M1, because of those permanent Thunderbolt / USB-C performance issues.

Do you think it’s still worth getting the M1 Mac mini right now that the M2 is unveiled albeit in the new MacBook Air?
@KyleErickson
@KyleErickson 2 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what you're looking for and how you're using your machine. The M1 is still a great option for a lot of people. I'll likely pick up the MacBook Air M2 to review, and I may end up using it for my travel laptop, but the M1 is still a very capable machine.

I am acknowlaging my ignorance as preface to this question so please don't stone me. I am DESPARATE to find a best alterative I can AFFORD, for the old Mini M1 now that I have a new M1 Studio for music production. I knew not to buy the 100 T memory ultra best. Instead I thought that I will regardless use most available memory for the plugins, virtual instruments , effects, etc. Just the content in these is volumes of space. But in ignorance I've only a Sandisk SSD 1T , already full too for backup. I need more Storage, as of now I cannot use studio...its blew up .Ill have to wipe it and start over regardless, but when I do, I want best use of fast enough external that I can save all I don't need on primary Mac Studio to and access thru Thunderbolt. Problem, I am an idot with computers. I was thinking is my question... I have the original Silicone M1 mini I'm thinking maybe fast enough and usable for that space to store as a external server basically to move any content like virtual instrument plugin content to and old projects to save. IS THAT A BAD IDEA.? I may need to get help and but a big SSD like mentioned in videos on this channel. Is that a bad idea? Ill have it if an issue arises with the Studio that may have a catastrophic fail that lead to finishing work on another device to finish in time. But is using that for an external memory even possible , and how. Also my two Sandisk SSDs do NOT work fast enough for my needs. latency in music production is very bad ...DOES anyone that may read this have any sound advice . It may just be I need to call a computer person to hire to setup such a configuration like mentions on videos...but as last resort bc I am an IDIOT as mentioned and also is not , or would be hard to afford at least now in this economy. CAN Anyone PLEASE HELP A DESPARATE FOOL who majored in biology instead of IT in college. Im outdated myself. ANYONE" ? -Will work for food/help

i am planning on buying the m1 mini before december, but would you recommend the cheapes version without bluetooth and wifi or would you say the build-in bluetooth antenna is decent enough, because i have heard a lot of people have been struggling with connectivity issues. and sinde i only use wired internet, i thought i might save some money just buying multi device mouse/keyboard set with a 2,4 ghz dongle instead.

I haven't had any connectivity issues - but just FYI every version has wifi6/bluetooth on the M1 Mac Mini.

What are your thoughts about 8 vs 16 G of ram in the Mac Mini M1?
@KyleErickson
@KyleErickson 2 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of folks who don't mind the 8GB option, and if you're not doing a whole lot with your computer I think it makes sense to consider. For myself, it's probably not enough, and if you're doing anything resource-heavy at all, you can stress out other components with virtual memory swapping as it hits the upper-end of the memory usage. All depends on how you use your machine.

Thanks for your review... I've been eyeing the M1 Mac Mini as an upgrade from my 2012 Macbook Air for a year now... But I decide to keep waiting until the M2. It's still not released unfortunately on the Mini but for the MBA and MBP instead. What are your thoughts on them? I use LR and PS and some video work occasionally in 4k...

Combining this as my desktop PC and my iPad with the MK as my laptop has been great (yeah i know iPad isn’t really a laptop but it works like one, i don’t need mac os personally for a mobile device, so for web browsing, documents and some social media use is more than enough) experience tbh, plus being able to use sidecar when I’m home and want to be on bed is just perfectly enough for me.
