I bought the M1 Max binned version with 24 Core GPU and 2 TB SSD of the Mac Studio in last year’s December and upgraded from my M1 mini. I mainly purchased and use the machine for streaming to Twitch via OBS Studio while recording at the same time and it works great. For everything else I could still use a M1 Mac mini to be honest.

I agree, had they limited the new M2 ultra to be only attainable through specing the Mac pro instead of the Studio it mightve given it more leniency. But they essentially killed their own market for the Mac Pro by giving both the same maxed out processor

HELP! I can't find a good comparison of the base M2 MB Pro 16 to the base M2 Mac Studio. I'm using a 2019 base MBpro16 and Davinci Resolve Studio... when I try to use ai tools like magic mask, tracking of any kind, voice isolation, etc., my machine grinds to a crawl and tells me it hates me. Literally takes 2 minutes to process 6 seconds of footage just for magic mask, if it works at all. And it takes me 45 min to 1hr or more to export a 45 min 1080p 60fps video with only color grading and voice isolation applied. ...Is the bottleneck the GPU or the RAM? ...I'm torn between upgrading to a base M2 MBpro16 or a base M2 Mac Studio... I work all over the place (coffee shops, the mall, every room in my house has a desk), but I could adjust my workflow if I NEED the extra RAM and performance from the Studio. ...My use-case is this: fix color and audio on 45 min videos 4k or less but up to 60fps, export them, then edit them into 10 minute videos, all with color grading, magic mask, tracking, voice isolation, dialogue leveler, auto-transcription, and whatever built-in AI goodies I learn how to use... Is 16 GB of RAM in the base laptop not enough? Is the base M2 Pro chip in the laptop not enough? ...

I'm curious if there's much of a difference between the MBP vs. Mac Studio Ultra Studio with similar memory. Like the 96GB memory MBP M2 is around $5000 and the Mac Studio Ultra with 64GB is around the same price. BUT the Studio Ultra has 24‑core CPU, 60‑core GPU, 32‑core Neural Engine, and the MBP has 12‑core CPU, 38‑core GPU and 16‑core Neural Engine. So there's a difference in core CPU/GPU, but the MBP has more memory for around the same price. The Macbook pro has the convenience of portability though, so having the all-in-one convenience of the laptop with its own display/keyboard/mouse etc. is valuable, if it's only slightly worse performance.

I'd love to learn how your timeline performance in Premiere improved, since that's largely determined by single processor speed rather than cores. My Mac Pro 2013 is pretty sluggish on the timeline, and am looking to get the best timeline performance (don't really care about renders) any observations would be much appreciated :)
@PritishBharti

I want to know the same thing. Also do you know if talking just about the timeline performance on Premiere pro will a mac beat a similar speced pc? (I don't care about the export timings but that's all I find on youtube)
@jamesstephenbrown
@jamesstephenbrown 9 ай бұрын
@@PritishBharti From what I've seen from looking into this, it appears the single threaded speed is identical between the Max and the Ultra, but also that they beat a similar speced PC on this one metric (not on others), I think this is because of the specific encode/decode engines the Mac Studio has built in. So, for my purposes I have ended going with a speced out Max, 38Core GPU with the 96Gb RAM. But who knows, it's hard without testing with your specific use case. I made a mistake assuming the 2013 Mac Pro was going to solve my issues back in the day, it didn't really - I'll report back whether this one does (it arrives in 2 weeks).
@jamesstephenbrown
@jamesstephenbrown 9 ай бұрын
@@PritishBharti Now that I have the Mac Studio Max, the timeline performance is great. There's still a short lag (a quarter of a second) if I for instance do a select forward on an hour of the timeline and shift it, but with the mixed formats I'm working with, the Mac Pro was taking 6-7 seconds to do this sort of operation, which is pretty terrible when you're trying to fine-cut. Unfortunately I don't have Ultra to do a comparison. But this has been a game-changer for me.

In case it wasn’t just a slip of the tongue, Ethernet should be pronounced with a long e as the first vowel. In the case of the ether in Ethernet, it’s derived from the Latin Aether, which we normally pronounce as ee, as we do in encyclopaedia. It’s not derived from the chemical term ether, which does have a short e to start.

@andyH_England
@andyH_England Жыл бұрын
@@lalnuntluangachhakchhuak5767 That is legacy hardware and has only been that way due to the slow progress of Intel and Windows OEMs. There is no Devine rule saying that modular>soldered, just what people are used to having been brought up in such times. Making an easy assumption that ARM-based hardware is resilient and will last the length of the PC, then upgradable is the main complaint. That is always peculiar to me, and mainly resolves around consumers wanting to buy a base model and upgrade RAM themselves to save money (just use TB4 SSD if you need more storage). That does not work with ARM as it is a SOC with shared memory. So just buy what you need. Say in three years time your business has prospered and you need more RAM to make more money, just buy a new machine, as you will also upgrade the CPU, GPU and co-processors to maximise profits. The old machine can be sold on eBay or suchlike. Ergo: soldered does not mean e-waste and does not mean that you cannot upgrade, you just need to understand the basis of how ARM works so well. Also, businesses that run these Studio Macs will use far less wattage than an Intel machine doing the same workload, which over a year could save hundreds of dollars, especially in the UK with our electric prices.

That 13900ks requires about 4x the power (250w) to reach a similar level of performance to the M2 Ultra (60w). A similar form factor is simply not possible. You could move to water cooling but the radiator alone would require more room than the Mac Studio. Regarding the comment about repairability Macs are significantly more reliable than any PC so this is a non-issue. The idea of modularity and upgradability is also a myth as most people will never do this even with the option. As your PC ages newer components will usually have compatibility issues with your existing system. If older compatible components are still on the market it doesn't make much sense to sink additional funds into something that's already obsolete. I love building PC's as much as the next person but this idea of upgrading components is from the 80's and obsolete. Tightly integrated SOC's provide performance, power efficiency, and increased reliability.

Go for the Mac Studio. Max is a faster chip. If you are going to start adding stuff the price difference will be small. For example Select the top m2 10 core, 19 core GPU 32GB of ram and 1TB of storage and 10GB ethernet you pay $2299. On the other hand a 12 core Mac Studio (8 high performance) 30 Core GPU, 32GB of ram 10gbit ethernet and 1TB of SSD cost you $2199. You can see it makes no sense, go for the studio. If you can pay the 64GB of ram it will help a lot with the longevity of the machine.

@@jaimeduncan6167 hey thanks for your reply I really appreciate and Value your advice!. Yea I was thinking the Mac Studio was probably the way to go, I did what you said but with the m2 Mac pro mini but added the the extra ram to 32gb which is £400 and the upgraded 19core gpu, 12core cpu and the cost came out at £2099 the exact cost of the m2 max studio base model. To be honest my absolute maximum budget is for the base model of the m2 max studio even then I’m stretching because the mini pro base model was my total in reach price. I’m not going above my means like I’m buying either outright.. but adding the extra storage and ram I’d really be go going beyond. I’m guessing the base storage will be one chip even on this unfortunately but I’m like it should be okay. Of course ideally like you said I’d/you’d get the 1tb. I’d wait for the M3 chips but that could be q1 2024 or q3, or even q1 2025 for another Mac Studio. But yea thanks thanks really great helpful advice that I will bank!.

@@dejavuking You can get away with the Mini Pro, but you would get more longevity out of the Studio. I got the Mini Pro to use in the mean time. It’s great and fully capable of what you are trying to do. But the Studio gives you more room to grow, and I will eventually upgrade to the Studio when I see a deal on the refurbished store. But the reality is the M2 Pro Mini base model is faster on single core than the original Studio Max. So it’s more than enough and I saved 700$ for now, and for me using FinalCut it’s perfect. But it’s the Ram that makes the Studio shine. It’s totally worth it, but you can definitely get by with the Mini pro for now if money is tight.

Just rebuilt my 2017 5K iMac but the plan is to grab one of these Mac Studios with the Studio display. I'm a professional Photoshop editor/creator so the extra power will be a bonus, certainly better than my i5 based, 64gb iMac lol :D

This would be a perfect upgrade for most of what I do! I'm running a 24 core Threadripper with an RTX 3090 which is by no means a slow system. What I have noticed since the release of the M1 is that video encoding is really impressive on these machines. My base M2 Pro MacBook Pro gets a higher BRAW Speed Test score than the RTX 3090. H265 encoding and decoding is night and day between the two... The Mac is faster and it's not even beefed up. I can only imagine what the Ultra chip is capable of for my video editing work. Only areas the RTX 3090 runs away with the win is Blender thanks to Optix denoising and generally the way ray tracing is handled. It's also nice to boot up a game and run it at max settings at the end of a long editing day.

I disagree. Faster than 24C and 3090?. Need to see that on screenvideo

I just ordered one. Not as beefy as the one you have there. *I will mainly use it for listening Spotify Music…* …nah… I'm in video production as well. And I work on an Intel iMac from 2020. I have two houses. So, my iMac will replace the oldest on at my other house. The age of the older one? No idea, but you need to enter time-codes by hammer and chisels, to give you an idea. 😜 The thing is, that even that older one is still suitable for editing. I think it must be 12 years old by now. That's the thing with Apple products. It costs a lot. But it will work forever.

I have the MacBook Pro 16 with the M1 Max. If the Mac Studio Ultra (not the +1000 option) is twice as fast in 3D rendering I would consider getting it. I’m also concerned that 64 gb ram is sufficient for all those graphics cores in the ultra chip.
