The most popular version of the song was performed by Bobby Darin in 1959, whose recording became a number one hit in the US and UK and earned him two Grammy Awards at the 2nd Annual Grammy Awards. Ella Fitzgerald also won a Grammy for her rendition of the song in 1961.

The melody "Moritat" was included in Saxophone Colossus, the sixth studio album by American jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Arguably Rollins' most famous album, it is often considered his breakthrough recording.

Independent sources differ in their reports on the album's release date. According to The Mojo Collection, it was released in the fall of 1956, while the August 1957 issue of Billboard magazine listed the album among the records released between March 16 and July of that year.
