Best way to make the cheese sauce is to get a small sauce pan, and gently melt the butter on lowest heat setting, in it, stir in half&half milk on low heat, and incrementally stir in the cheese powder until emulsified into the milk/butter. turn down the heat further. The stuff will turn into actual cheese sauce. transfer sauce into drained pot of mac noodles. Best mac and cheese ever. Enjoy!

You can find Annie’s on sale at least where I’m at for 10/10 or .89 a box. Costco has them for like...8 dollars for a box of 12 so I get those all the time. Trying to be even a bit more conscious over what I put in my body- I can taste the difference totally. Annie’s is so good!

With the Annie's you might have had better success with the sauce using a wisk to blend in the cheese. I think when following the Kraft direction, I've had the cheese sauce to clump. Both these look good. I absolutely love mac and cheese and mix in tuna, corn and mayo. Tami, you are exactly right. The Kraft brand tastes more like butter than cheese. That is one reason why I stopped using it and started making my own or getting the Chef Boyardee brand.

Interesting comparison. In Europe (except England maybe) macaroni & cheese is pretty much unknown. Italian style spaghetti with tomato sauce and parmesan cheese is more common. I would probably go for the Annie's because it at least contains a little bit of real cheese, whereas the Kraft only has fake replacement ingredients. But honestly it doesn't take any more work to do your own homemade mac & cheese than to use a ready product. You don't need anymore than what's inside the box and what you need to add anyway except hat you have to add cheese and salt on your own. And you have the advantage of being able to use a high quality cheese for a much more intense flavour.

Love the KY t-shirt! My little Kroger always has Annie's box mac n chz for a buck. I'll keep a couple of the white cheddar boxes in the pantry for a quick lunch...or lazy dinner for one. Adding a little extra fresh grated chz (whatever u like) makes it even better, even if its the parmesean from the "green can". What makes the orange mac n chz u bought orange is the same thing added to cheddar cheese for Americans, beta carotene...which is just a natural pigment from veggies/fruits. I'm guessing carrots, in this case. I have no idea why we Americans are so ingrained to eat orange cheese, but it's a natural food coloring. I tried a little microwave mix of the Kraft stuff after not eating it for probably a decade. YAGHH!!! Was too chemical tasting to me.

The pan was way too big. Whenever I make my Annie's I use a small pot and I put the butter milk and powder together on super low heat and stir until the clumps are out. It always comes out creamy and I've never had it clumpy like what happened to you guys. The Annie's white cheddar shells are the best though!

I used to love Kraft Dinner, I could eat an entire box on my own if I wanted to. After my son was born, I couldn't eat it anymore. Even one bite would cause me severe abdominal pain. I bought a box of Annie's just to try it out. I practically inhaled it and then waited to see how my body would react. Nothing. I buy entire cases of it now. My kids love it too.

I typically buy the Annie's for my kids. I am not an Annie's snob, but the selling point for me is the no artificial colors. I don't care as much about the pasta being organic, but I feel like I've read before that the orange cheese coloring is really bad. (Although my guilty pleasure snack of choice is Goldfish, so I'm totally not consistent!) I always wait for Kroger to put Annie's on sale for $1/box, which is every 2 or 3 weeks, and I stock up when they do. Sometimes I'll even pair that sale with a coupon. It's funny, I don't think I've ever read the directions on the back of a box of Annie's mac & cheese! For years I have made it the same way - in the microwave! In a large Pampered Chef batter bowl I heat/boil for about 7-8 minutes (stirring a couple of times in between), then stir in 2Tbsp butter and the cheese packet. However, I never serve it straight up. I actually add tons of diced chicken and broccoli or peas to round out the meal! And because I add that stuff I also have to add creaminess, so with the butter and cheese packet I supplement with some shredded cheddar and/or Monterrey Jack cheese, and some milk. At that point I also have to add some salt because of the mix-ins. This is my go-to quick & easy meal for when I don't have much time to cook. I always keep cooked/diced chicken in the freezer for these types of meal situations. It's like a 15 minute casserole and we love it! Oh, and our favorite Annie's variety is the white cheddar shells!

I was reading your comment and that book came to mind ... if you make Annie's Mac & cheese then you'll want to add butter and the cheese packet. If you add the diced chicken, then you'll want to add some broccoli and so on .... you get why I giggled ;) It sounds good though! Here in Canada...I'm almost positive that the formula for Kraft macaroni and cheese has changed. It isn't any where near as cheesy as it used to be. I mean there is a definite difference in taste. Not in the powder cheese packets at all! just the noodles. Weird,huh!? We're thinking it's because it's organic; of course, and the flavor is there for that reason?
