would this be a good destination for novice rider? I am confident on red and blue at Tarland, but generally don't do anything more technical than that.

I previously thought that Finale was not for beginner or intermediate riders, but that is not the case. There are definitely some trails that you would find too much, but there are plenty or blue and red trails. There might be uplifts or guides that cater to your abilities better and take you specifically to the “easier” trails.
