I mean, there's maybe a reason he's so completely terrified when he shows up after Skimble. Teazer is scared too, but she goes to hide in the crowd. Jerrie drops to the ground and can't move with terror. Something I really only noticed because Skimbleshanks was being Best Dad and protecting him and some others while trying to spot Teazer. Something happened there, why they're clearly not with him anymore. (which makes it extra great that he's the first one up after Alonzo gets knocked down, brave baby boy)

Thanks for pointing it out. I long since considered Demeter's story the most profound and it's entirely in the background. The Musical starts with her being skittish amd seeing Macavity in every shadow, it is her who flees from the headlights of thar car in the very first moment of the musical. I am deeply convinced it is as you say, she was once deeply involved with Macavity and still hasn't shaken him, which is why she is the only one recognizing him in disguise. And Macavity truly isn't through with her either. But she overcomes her trauma as she sees the kittens are in danger and jumps on hid back like "OH NO YOU WON'T , NOT ON MY WATCH!" While fully knowing what awaits her. Macavity nearly manages to kidnap her again. Her found family comes to the rescue, just as she rescued them first. Her development is so interesting and deeply moving to watch.

Is she his "wife" yet? I think there are conflicting headcanons around concerning it, seeing how scittish she is. I think Munku knows better than to force anything she would not want. I love how they ALL come to her rescue. But what I love most about this scene is the incredible bravery Demeter shows. She's scared of her own shadow ever since she escaped Macavity, but seeing how all other cats fall for it, she flipping jumps on his BACK, goes in direct physical contact with him to expose him, before anyone else can be hurt. This scene right there is what makes Demeter my absolute favourite of the whole bunch. This sudden spark of "OH NO YOU WON'T!!" Yes, Mistoffelees brought Deutoronomy back, but she pushed all her fear aside, put her own life on the line to protect especially the kittens that were flocking around the fake in that moment.

Just some little background if anyone is confused. Macavity is of course a criminal. He allegedly was apart of the Jellicle tribe before he began committing crimes. The reason why he went after Demeter is because they (might have) been mates, or he raped her at one point (You can find that note in the documentary of this film). Eventually, Demeter became paranoid to the point where she KNOWS what Macavity is planning. Munkustrap is the Jellicle protector, so he goes to save her. In this film, it's also implied that Munkus and Demeter are mates (it's interpreted different in different productions but I stand by DeMunku) which is another reason why he protected her. Just to throw this out there, some people believe that Macavity is the eldest brother of Munkustrap and Tugger. It has been confirmed that Munkustrap and Tugger are Old Deuteronomy's sons.

Love the scenery when he appear. When we see Old Deutteronomy the music as well as the atmosphere is exactly like when he first appear, very calm, relaxing and reassuring. The lighting suggest something at best natural like the moonlight or at worst a simple blue-ish lamp. When Demeter start having dought the atmosphere is exactly like how she feel, there's a lot of pause in the music as if the music itself was trying to reassure itself by trying to continue despite the obvious fact that something is bizarre about the situation. The very sudden calm become extremely suspicious and menacing. It's not a normal calm. It's a "calm before the storm" type of calm. Also, that's when the attentive part of the audience would notice that old Deuteronomy walk is unusal, and the fact that he's not showing his face the audience to hide the mask make it even worse. Then when Macavity (the storm) reveal himself the atmosphere drastically change to a super red-ish color, the music is never interrupted and is a disturbed version of the main theme, the tempo is much faster and everything is going way too fast (also, explosions everwhere motherfucker !). The atmosphere suggest a fire as well as his furr pattern. To sum up, this part of the song, this scene is in 3 part: 1) The reassuring calm, but we don't know yet that it's a fake calm. 2) The suspicious calm. 3) Straight up hellfire and brimstone. Macavity is the embodiment of evil, hes the only cat who's makeup was made to look like anything but a cat, from my point of view, this character is as if Sher-khan from the Jungle book and Kane (the wrestler) had a kid and gave it to Moriarty. THIS is how you make such a cool and menacing villain, he had more impact in a single appearance than most of the characters in the first part of the musical before the intermission like Rumpus cat, Jennyanydots or Bustopher Jones. he was teased and described for an entire song yet when he finally appear, he's exactly how we imagined him but somehow even worse.

She might have led to the demise of her suitor (growltiger) in growltiger's last stand, so she is seen as a rather bad cat. She is also too vain for the tribe and that is why she was kicked out. Growltiger's last stand was not shown in the film, it was cut for time, but a wonderfull part of the show. I hope that answers your question.
