I like this performance of the cauldron spell! Using "double, double..." as a musical chant, behind the ingredients, is pretty brilliant!

@Diamondstar78512 жыл бұрын
@@namjoo8592 if you're still curious, the chanting is set to the "Dies Irae," an oft referenced Gregorian chant. Many requiem masses reference that melody; film scores also reference it quite often.

@flare @CripsGang @FroggyFrog and all the students who didn't like this: This form of entertainment took the place of all the media and other kinds of entertainment we have today. Here's the point: Macbeth, influenced by his wife, took steps to make the witches' prophecy come true. Ultimately, they actually killed the king (and others) in order to MAKE the prophecy come true; the "prophecy" was really a prophecy of what they themselves would do and not something that would happen TO them. This scene is meant to be scary/funny. It can be presented many different ways. They're actually setting him up. They prophesize that no man "of woman born" would be able to kill Macbeth. His enemy was McDuff. McDuff's mother had a C-section, so he was literally NOT "of woman born." She was probably dead by the time he was "ripped untimely" (ahead of time) from her womb. They also tell him that the woods of Birnam would come to "Dunsinane." So, who ever heard of a forest traveling on its own? What happened is that the soldiers camouflaged themselves with branches from the wood and slowly traveled to Dunsinane and surrounded Macbeth's castle. He fought with McDuff and probably wasn't as careful and aggressive as he could have been because he believed no one "of woman born," ie, anyone who has a woman for a mother, could kill him. He didn't know that, technically, McDuff was not "of woman born." He didn't know that because he was too cocky and didn't think it through and question it, and that's what makes the ending ironic. McDuff killed him. This version lacks some playfulness. Here's what's playful: Listen to the alliteration (words beginning with the same sound): "double, double, toil, and trouble." (d,d,t,t). It's not serious. Listen to the consonance (same-sounding vowels: "ou ou, oi, ou." "Fire burn and cauldron bubble": "f,b,c,b"; "ai," 'u," "au," "u." These sound like some mystical chant used in Middle-Eastern magic. It was entertaining for people who had little other entertainment. Listen to (or read) the list of ingredients; they're gross and hysterical: eye of newt, tongue of dog, lizard's leg, owlet's wing, baboon's blood, scale of dragon, wolf's tooth, nose of Turk, Tartar's lips, finger of birth-strangled babe, liver of blaspheming Jew (yes, they were anti-semitic). These are to gross people out, as in a horror movie. This is a play filled with ironies, murders, and double-crosses, all the stuff of Hollywood and TV. Too bad I didn't see this earlier; I would have made you a video. Stay well and good luck.

I'm here to make you guys suffer (sorry), that is to say, I'm making a Shakey class - for non-native speakers.Trying to peak interest. I thought murder, dead kings, black magic, prophesies of how some arrogant man gets screwed by destiny as his more ambitious lady friend goes batshit nuts might be interesting. Then there are walking trees. Plus it all sounds a bit different. Just sayin'. The Covid homework assignment could be way worse.
