0:05 He's here in double trust ( _first as I am his kindman and his subject_ ) - Macbeth Act 1 scene 7 - : this is part of macbeth's solilquy. convey's macbeth's awareness of duplicity, as he knows it is morally wrong to betray duncan who has done nothing wrong, as he not only is Duncan's subject but also his cousin or kin, he is at conflict within himself, he wants to be king but at the expense of killing someone who trusts him is it worth it? 0:07 "infected be the air( _whereon they ride, and damned all those that trust them!_ )" - Macbeth referring to the witches Act 4 scene 1. - this reveals his regret and self condemnation for trusting the witches. He is essentially cursing himself, as HE is the one who believed the witches (LMAOAOAO this lowkey funny) he is saying that the witches are so terrible and cursed that even the air they ride on is infected by their evilness(emphasizing on the belief that witches are evil), this brings us back to the start of the play where Macbeth and Banquo met the witches, although Macbeth didn't believe them at first but he believed them after the first propecy came true (him becoming thane of Cawdor). This suggests that Macbeth deeply regrets trusting the witches and facing the consequences of having followed their actions that he has damned himself. This also may suggest that by damning the witches he believes in a higher power which will come and for people to face the consequences of his deeds. 0:10 - "blood bolter'd banquo smiles upon me" - Macbeth Act 4 scene 1 - this is when Macbeth sees the 8 kings as they pass before him with banquo leading them in the apparitions shown by the witches. Banquo is smiling at Macbeth because he is mocking him, even in his death he knows his descendants are going to be kings. Shaekespeare wants to flatter King James by using this type of imagery as he knows King James can trace his lineage back to banquo. in "blood bolter'd banquo" the "B" is a harsh consonant sounding, matches with the imagery created with blood. Smiling is a sign of victory, and is positive imagery is a juxtaposition of the bloody imagery created of Banquo, someone who is covered in blood but smiling, can be an unsettling image to Macbeth but to the audience it can possibly have a positive/warming image of Banquo in their eyes, as they compare Banquo to Macbeth, can interpret he is smiling even in death, he cannot feel the pain Macbeth has inflicted onto him/Macbeth killing him had no effect on his happiness, whereas Macbeth is being referred to as a 'Tyrant', puts them in a position where they are made to compare the two as Banquo was made to be a foil character to macbeth. (im just yapping pls correct me) 0:15 - "violent sorrow seems a modern ecstasy" - Ross, act 4 scene 3. context: Ross is a thane of Scotland, he is delivering news to Macduff that Macbeth has killed his family. He is describing Scotland as "cannot Be called our mother, but our grave", (can't call scotland his home but his grave). comparing 'ecstasy'(something that means extreme happiness) to "violent sorrow", violent has blood like or fighting imagery, like a person has been violently inflicted with sorrow, they are more than sad, and to compare it to 'ectasy', this is a hyperbole as even a depressing term can be described as an everyday joy, gives the reader a perspective of how the subjects of scotland feel after macbeth has become king, coming to conclusion that macbeth is not a good king/ times in scotland have changed for the worse since macbeth has become king. Can use this quotation to talk about divine birthright of kings as macbeth has disrupted the natural order. Or can use this quotation to talk about how Macbeth has become an illness to scotland, plaguing and infecting the land, very dangerous and disruptive to the natural cycle. 0:19 - "False face must hide what the false heart doth know" - Macbeth, act 1 scene 7. - the last line in the act. Theme: appearance versus reality, and Power. Macbeth has given in to LM, he has now made up his mind on killing Duncan, showing how power causes people to do terrible things such as regicide(killing the king), upsetting the natural disorder, also regicide was considered a serious sin at this time period as people thought that kings were chosen by God(divine right of kings). Context: Macbeth and LM must act like loving hosts to Duncan while planning to kill them. Close analysis: "false face" - must be able to keep his emotions to himself. "false heart doth know" - accepting he HAS to deceive king Duncan in order to be King, there is no other way. "false heart" - macbeth may be questionning his sense of morality. Relating to the theme of appearance vs reality, can be used with "Look Like Th’ Innocent Flower, But Be The Serpent Under ‘T"- LM.There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face: He was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust." - Duncan ( _Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased;_ ) 0:23 - "pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow" ( _Raze out the written troubles of the brain;_ ) - Macbeth, Act 5 scene 3. Context: doctor is updating Macbeth about LM's mental sickness. Macbeth is asking the doctor if he can just cure her using "some sweet oblivious antidote". to which the doctor replies "Therein the patient/Must minister to himself". LM is plagued by thoughts and visions of killing Duncan and can't get over her remorse of it as she has a fragmented mind. Close reading: "rooted" , can relate to this being deeper than that on the surface but something deep within, can't be fixed as easily just on the outside. "pluck" Macbeth is underestimating the severity of LM's disease? he thinks it is easily cured or he may have some false hope of curing her, "pluck" has implications it is just surface form, but the following word of "rooted" can mean it is much deeper than that, Macbeth may know that the sorrow is deep within her subconscious but chooses to ignore that fact and gives it a surface detail. I WENT FROM 7 in mocks TO A 9 IN LITERATURE HUZZAH WE WON 140/160
