Lawrence Wraith You think 40 seconds is a long ovation for Anna? Joan Sutherland had a 45 MINUTE standing ovation when she sang Alcina in Venice, Italy when the Italians immediately dubbed her as "La Stupenda". Or her 28 curtain calls at the end of Gli Ugonotti at La Scala. Next to that, Joan's 20 minutes standing ovation from her opening night at C Garden sounds tame. And her 12 minute SOLO standing ovation after her Met debut 11/26/1961 was all the Met will allowed or she would have gotten more. Sutherland's 11/26/1961 Met debut as Lucia is on Utube if you want to hear why she ruled the Met from 1961 to her retirement as their Prima Donna Assoluta. Anna has a very beautiful sound, and I can understand why you love her. But if you want to hear world record ovations, look for Joan Sutherland, Leontyne Price and Monserrat Caballe. The Met no longer give long curtain calls and ovations these days. That's sad because there are still talents out there. Though not as much as 50 years ago.

Lady Macbeth is not about showing around sexy boops and glorious looks, it's a Verdian sort of Elektra ... Thousands of shades in the voice, in the phrasing, acting inside the voice, and so on ... And the beautiful Anna is entirely miscast here, totally out of place. The Lady is not about singing: It's acting while singing, not the other way round! She has robotized her singing like many other singers do. Be it Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Cilea or Puccini, everything is sung in the same pattern. Norma is next! Well, let's then sing Aida, Valentine, Isolde, Abigaille ! This SOMPTUOUS voice has become, like many other voices, a "jack-of-all-voices" instrument. People applaude (she deserves to be honest!) but it shows they don't know a thing about opera! And the MET has become a factory for miscasting talents and ruining voices (Dessay as Lucia?! Dessay as Violetta?! Vogt as Minnie?!) Pathetic and symptomatic of the idiots who manage opera companies, hopeless music directors and burn-in-hell stage directors! What those singers need are accomplished MUSIC COACHES and REPETITEURS! That would save a lot of damage and collateral losses to taxpayers' money!
@flannerymonaghan-morris13174 жыл бұрын
Well, Dessay is/was a lyric coloratura soprano...and TBF, the roles of Violetta and Lucia were specifically written for coloratura sopranos...but yeah, maybe a little too young for the role. And also, Anna has admitted she could care less for fach classification process, and she is quite an ambitious lady....
@operabilia4 жыл бұрын
@@flannerymonaghan-morris1317 Dessay a "lyric"??? She has never ever been a lyric. Her lyric roles were catastrophic and destroyed her voice. She was a light coloratura and should have remained within that repertory. And NO, neither Violetta nor Lucia were NOT written for "coloratura" soprani but for "drammatico d'agilità" or "sfogato". To set the record straight on Dessay. Kind rgds.

We all noticed that she could care less about fachs. She has been butchering all sorts of roles with her shitty technique for the best part of two decades. She is a modern, hotter version of Florence foster Jenkins. I personally believe if she didn’t have boobs and very likely hadn’t performed fellatio on directors left and right she would still be mopping floors where they found her. Because there is no other possible explanation as to how such a terrible “singer” could have made it past a high school performance and into Met and La Scala.

And in that list of "no trill in 'Vieni, t'affretta' you can include a lot of very remarkable and notorious interpreters of the role, since of course this fiendishly difficult role isn't completely defined by a few trills in the character's very 1st aria.

@@mamukacercvadze6253 Lady Macbeth is technically even worse than a dramatic, she's a Falcon role! A dramatic role with mezzo's medium-low notes, soprano's high notes (up to Mib6!), coloraturas and notes emitted di forza 😨 IMO Verdi's hardest role together with Abigaille... And also for that not well developed sopranos should avoid it, especially Netrebko, 'cause if you aren't prepared your voice gets ruined!
@mamukacercvadze6253 Жыл бұрын
@@esterbruno8604 Verdi knew the vocals thoroughly. So, if you sing a part of Verdi suitable for your voice, your voice does not get tired and it is easy. For example, travatore.If this role is sung by a dramatic soprano (for example, Rosa Ponssele) easy for her,but if Lyrical soprano sings Dramatic role: When she sing,she is getting tired, shouts, forcefully darkens her voice... and does not sound low notes,for example in "Miserere"... Callas had voice problems... That's why she lost her voice. When the lyrical voice sing a dramatic role it is like a flute playing a trumpet part...
@esterbruno8604 Жыл бұрын
@@mamukacercvadze6253 Verdi's roles are never easy, but clearly just as a lyric/spinto soprano feels more comfortable in roles like Aida, a dramatic/dramatic coloratura feels more comfortable in roles like the two Leonoras, Abigaille, Lady etc. But it's not true that lyrical sopranos can never touch some dramatic roles: it's a matter of technique development. Caballé, full lyric soprano, sang several time Norma and Tosca and she sounded stunning; Moffo, a lyric coloratura, sang Liù and Butterfly; Carteri at the same time sang from Adina to Suor Angelica ecc. They sang well these roles, 'cause their technique was amazing. Yes, Callas' voice had weakened, but despite her illness and her psychological issues, she never sounded bad, 'cause her technique stood. BTW a lyric that sings dramatic is like a flute playing trumpet; but a flute can't change its sound, voice is a far more flexible instrument, and its technique can be developed over time. That's what Netrebko didn't do: she's always been a lyric with a rounded timbre, but never developed enough her voice for these role. She she went from lyrical to dramatic too drastically, without first improving her voice. Now that's the problem.

As a follow up....it is obvious what Peter Gelb is doing......in trying to keep opera alive he is appealing to the next generation by going very contemporary. Ana is beautiful....and sexy as all hell....so that is what they are using when casting her as Lady MACBREASTS. While yes she is a very talented singer.....she does sometimes sing a little off key or flat...that is the ONLY thing flat about her. I think Ana is wonderful....but reality check...back in the day could Jesse Norman get away with being off key...NEVER Peter Gelb now brings in musical theater and Broadway producers....while it may be working I am sure Sjr Rudolph Bing is spinning in his grave.

There is one thing though, that I cannot understand: all these people who like opera SO MUCH, love it, fight for their singers, find every possible argument to defend the singers they like so much, why don't they LEARN ABOUT OPERA?... it is a very simple fact, that, if we are passionate about something, WE CAN LEARN about that something we like so much... there are BOOKS, DO LEARN, DO LEARN HOW TO READ MUSIC, DO LEARN ABOUT SINGING, ABOUT STYLE, ABOUT TECHNIC, ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT COMPOSERS AND WHY THEY WROTE, AND WHAT THEY WROTE AND FOR WHOM THEY WROTE... it is rally a fascinating world, so rich, so vast, so wonderful.... do learn about Opera if you like Opera that much...because, if you DO learn, if the audience is EDUCATED in that they like so much, then the singers need to get BETTER, need to STUDY more, need to LEARN themselves about style and technic... WE the audience MAKE the success of the singers.. we should not allow that Theatre Directors and stupid journalist, and bad conductors TELL US WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS NOT.... if we love it that much, then we should learn about it.....and then, we will all understand when something is sung badly, or not, in style or not, musically or not, if all the tones are there or not... otherwise, all this discussions about this or that singer are utterly ridiculous.... Then we, older opera lovers will not need to tell you, youngish opera lovers how many big problems there are in the way Miss Netrebko sings this and so many other roles. This is suppose to be Art, one cannot contempt oneself with such profan statement as to say: "I like it" and think that that is enough.

I don´t have words to describe how terrible, dull, inappropriate, out of character and out of her vocal possibilities this role is for Netrebko, as well as so many others she has already performed, Aida being the most recent. I'm sorry, I apologize to all of her fans and unconditional followers, but SHE IS NOT A DRAMATIC SOPRANO AND THIS ROLE IS SPECIFICALLY FOR DRAMATIC SOPRANOS. Nothing is right, nor the musical interpretation, nor the acting...nothing! She may have a beautiful voice, that cannot be denied, but she has become a clown, trying to imitate Callas by singing all the roles she can find. And by the way, Callas also payed a very high price for doing so. And I am sick to death of finding every single soprano role sang by this woman. And for those who say Verret was not good at Lady Machbeth...please do not give opinions about things you clearly do not understand. Loving Opera is not the same as understanding how a good technique works and sounds. It´s just outrageous and makes me so angry!

She is ideal for this role ! This role requires dramatic voice, high notes, coloratura etc., and many singers who try to sing this role lack some elements... She doesn't have ugliness which Callas' voice had, but it does not matter.
