This M1 mac is the first Mac to be "anti upgrade" Mac. Everything is soldered, you can't even replace the SSD which is total shame. Apple may sell this for cheap at first but if many people buy it then they will increase the price after that, but for machine that can't be upgraded or almost nothing to replace with high price tag, it just so dumb. I can see why Apple trying so hard to market this crap device.

I have obtained the basic MBP 8/256, and using with LG 4K external monitors. For time being, didn’t face any issues with external monitors. Sometimes, wifi drops and I should reconnect by turning wifi on and off. Nice channel! Subscribed! Great job Ashish.

i have the 8gb memory, 512gb SSD MacBook Pro in a box, waiting to be unwrapped. i’m excited to use this in conjunction w my current 2018 MacBook Air, as i can use the Pro for editing, and the Air for rendering and exporting projects whilst doing other things on the pro. or, alternatively, i can do all of my youtube work and social media work on the pro, and keep the macbook air strictly for school and light web browsing!

Thank you for a detailed yet easy to understand review. Question: Have you encountered MacBookAir 'partially' freezing? I had left a few apps open from night before (Chrome, Notes, Outlook, Maps, Excel). I could navigate Finder and close it but could not quit or open any of aforementioned apps that were open. Also not able to open any other apps. I was able to restart from Apple menu. Restart took a few min which I am not really concerned about. What does concern me was after I thought the MacBook restart was done, it automatically started Mac OS Recovery/Recovery Assistant. Then asked to set up iCloud (which was already previously set up). After this it ran Restart with a red bar over the regular light gray progress indicator bar. Do you have an explanation or any idea what may have caused above? Never had any issues like this with Pro. I bought this MacBook Air a week ago from Apple, NEW sealed in the box (i.e. NOT refurb.) 8GB RAM and 256 GB. Wanted 16/512 but would have had to wait too long. My MacBook Pro (early 2018/late 2017) also 8 GB RAM/256 GB died as a result of liquid spilling on it and I needed a new one right away.

generally the MacBook Air offers the best hardware for its price point. The only problem I can foresee is if there are programs that are not compatible with the macOS operating system. In any case you can run virtualisation software if you are inclined to buy a Mac and still run Windows software. The decision about Windows versus macOS is a fundamental one. But if it does not matter, I will recommend the MacBook Air for sure.

Go for pro sir. Air would lag post rendering, you could see frame drops like thing but not on pro. Also because of fan pro could sustain more stress for a longer period of time especially dealing with 4k videos

My money will always be on more RAM with these machines. They run really cool and the only time I see it getting hot at the bottom is when it's connected to a 4K display and running CPU/GPU intensive tasks for a long time. However, I edit 4K video everyday and wish I had more RAM, especially when deviating from FCP. When I see Davinci Resolve stutter, Activity Monitor shows it as using upwards of 8GB of RAM. Photoshop and Lightroom will also benefit from the extra RAM. The only time you will see a difference with the Pro, if it was also 16GB, will be during export times with Photoshop and LR and when exporting video, but tests have shown that the difference is only about 10% or so.

I am currently facing lot of issues and hoping that it will give the best performance after compatibility issues sorts. If anyone can wait to get softwares and the tech to be updated according to M1 can surely go for it. Anyone using it in regular working can face much issues.

For Graphic Design use, Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign, do you recommend the pro or the Air. I barely do video editing and if I did the highest that I would go is 1080

Hashem, the Air is more than capable for all this, its the one I would choose. It runs really cool. Unless there is a CPU/GPU intensive task running for say at least 20 minutes, there won't be a noticeable performance difference between the two. The way I see it, if you plan on upgrading components, do it to the Pro, if you want to buy one of the stock configurations, get the Air. All of them are more than capable of running these programs. Also keep in mind that the issues mentioned in the video are teething issues on early machines, software fixes should cure most of them.

Hashem, the logic is this: very soon, you will see a second round of M1 based Macs, you will see a 14 incher with slimmer bezels and a 16 incher with dedicated GPU. The display technology is also expected to shift to much more efficient Mini-LED tech. So it does not make sense to spend too much on these machines at this time. If your needs can be met with an Air, just stick the stock configuration and then if you outgrow it, you can upgrade to a newer machine. If you do decide to spend more to upgrade, then you probably need the fan in the Pro as well and its better to get the extra cooling that comes with it. that way you will have 16GB RAM and a fast CPU that will not slow down even with extended loads.

My friend purchased an M1 MacBook Pro with 8G Ram and 512G Hard Drive. We installed Parallels to run Windows 10. When Windows 10 would not installed, we found out that it is not compatible with the M1 chip. I have a 2017 MacBook Pro and it runs fine. Also, the WiFi connection kept stopping while we were trying to download Parallels and Windows. We had to turn off the WiFi on the M1 and then turn it back on again. Websites in Safari were very slow to load compared to my Intel MacBook Pro.

It’s true…MacBook Air does feel stressed with FCP and photoshop. The liquify tool of photoshop gives a black/grey screen on M1 air and the mac often freezes and need to force stop. Never expected such things from apple.

Gustavo most certainly go for the M1 Mac mini. The difference in performance will be vast in this case. The only other Mac computers that can hold a candle to this superb M1 processor are recent Macs with dedicated GPUs and lots of on-board memory. Any Mac from 2012 Era cannot hope to compete. So unless you require a dedicated GPU, do not even consider anything else at this stage. Just bear in mind that in the future there will be more powerful M1-based Mac computers coming.

It’s basically using the whole bottom plate of the laptop as a heatsink. It’s not a problem 90% of the time, because it only gets hot been running intensive programs and being connected to a 4K external display. Most of the time you will not find it even warm. If the idea is to run intensive programs for a long period regularly, then it’s worth investing in the Pro, otherwise for 90% of situations this is more than capable.

MacBooks are generally better than most PCs hardware wise. You will love using the keyboard and the trackpad, there is no competition in these terms. Also the 16 GB M1 will be more than capable for 99% of tasks that you may throw at it. The only consideration here, is that these machines can only run ARM architecture Windows, so check the compatibility of any software you’re planning to use with that. And more importantly, the availability of ARM Windows for non-Microsoft computers has not been possible till now, other than a developer preview. As long as that is not an issue, you will be served very well with either the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. But generally speaking, I would not advise buying an M1 Mac to someone whose main goal is to run windows. Hope this helps.

the youtube scrolling problem seems to be a software issue, not a hardware issue. i have the same issue on all of my computers, where there are apparently two scroll bars, and it takes swiping in the same direction twice in order to scroll. this is happening also on my old ass Mid-2010 iMac running High Sierra and Safari 12

Hi Ashok, all of your mentioned applications will work beautifully on the M1 Macbooks. You can go right ahead and make a purchase. Definitely choose the M1 and not the Intel based Macbooks. Rajdeep yes certainly, with time, most, if not all, plugins and apps will get updated to M1 versions. So this is only a temporary problem. But don't jump ship yet if its your work computer, unless you have access to more than 1.

The main difference is created by the ram in these situations, the fan does not make that much of a difference, the laptop runs very cool. So keep your ram increase as the priority and if the budget allows, then you can go for the pro as well. But according to me the air will handle this load quite easily.

It’s a very capable computer and well suited for most tasks. If the budget allows and you have the time, upgrade the RAM to 16 GB. If not, no problem, I’ve been using the 8GB variant for one year now without many problems.

How does this M1 MacBook Air compare to the 2020 MacBook Pro with 8th gen i5. I have the 8th gen MacBook Pro 2020 which I can sell off for a loss of INR 20-25k. And with that money I can get the M1 MacBook Air. Do you think it make sense, since M1 Macs will be more future proof?

Rishi anything less than a 15 or 16 inch Macbook Pro with dedicated graphics doesn't stand a chance in front of these machines. They are silent, cool and long lasting in terms of battery life. Having said that, look at what you intend to do with your laptop, if you're not left wanting for performance with your current one, it may make more sense to buy the next round of upcoming Macs, they're not far. Personally I have shifted from a 15 inch 2018 Pro to this M1 Air full time. It's got its challenges but these are incredible machines that will only get better with time! Hope this helps!

These are fantastic machines and you will love using them. The 3.2Ghz M1 processors in them are really fast. So performance wise there will be no issues. Just make sure any programs you are wanting to run are compatible before you make a purchase.

Govindaraajan, the extra RAM is always the better choice. Most people keep their computers for a few years, and that way you will be more future proof down the road. Storage is good to have but a fast SSD is easy to add via the USB port. So if the decision is between the two, the 16GB RAM variant is the better choice. Both computers are equally fast.

Hey! I got a brand new macbook pro m1 and my major work is in MS PowerPoint. I am facing some issues, may be you can help! 1. I’m not able to ungroup .emf files in PowerPoint which used to work fine in windows. 2. After going to file option I am not getting the same options like print setting / create PDF/XPS document etc. used to get in windows. Would be really helpful!!

You cannot go wrong with the M1 MacBook Air. If you need a computer right now, go ahead and buy it. If you can wait then wait for the next round of MacBooks that will feature newer designs and even faster processors. Perhaps a dedicated GPU too if that’s your requirement as well.

Hi Santhosh I can certainly explore the idea of making a video about these apps. But the M1 is far superior to any Intel chip before it. So if you do decide to buy a new Mac make sure it is the M1. Only if you need to run Windows natively via Bootcamp, should you even consider an Intel-based Mac. Hope this helps.

Fortunately it’s not a common occurrence and only happened twice or thrice. The reason I needed to mention this is because I have almost never had to restart my Intel-based Macs to restore internet connectivity. But don’t let this put you off this should get fixed in a small software update soon, if enough users report this. They are very enjoyable computers to own and perform like nothing before them. Hope this helps.

Well, I’m disappointed in Apple. I received my new M1 MacBook Pro 16 GB 2 days ago and I’ve never had ANY issues with any of my Apple computers until now. There are too many issues to go into here but the biggest issues out of the box is that it freezes for no reason. Suffice it to say, all of my past macs are still working machines, just needed upgrading to newer models....this machine is not what it should be.

😭 Bought the MBA 512 for after effects and video editing and now having worst performance issues like rendering times for a 4k footage too high and all that stuff.... Will it get fixed soon? Like in an update or should I sell it to buy something other for heavy tasks?

You can manage with 256GB, if you are judicious with how you use the disk space. Also it’s easy to add more storage by using a external hard drive. If you work with large video or photo files, then 512GB will be better. But for your usage, I think you should be fine with the base model.
