Tried an M1 Air for a few days, and the performance is truly amazing. But lack of 32-bit app support, game controller support, and glossy screen + general chassis fragility are just deal-breakers for me 😕. Apple are never going to fix that, so I guess I'm waiting for Windows/Linux CPUs (whether x86 or ARM-based) to catch up.

Not only is the M1 faster despite having less Memory the ergonomics are on another planet. Keyboard wise the I prefer the mac. The trackpad is a million percent better.

M1 is a revolution in computing. It is sad to see Intel dying like this, but they deserved it, last 10 years there was no innovation from Intel, and Apple was working hard on new architecture since first IPhone.
@BriO8532 жыл бұрын
Why M1? I don't get the hype. AMD is making 7nm chips too, now intel. They say intel and amd are way behind apple m1. But never heard a real explanation as to why and how apple gained so much ground. I suspect it's more to do with their marketing, which is VERY good.
@tomaszcodasz2 жыл бұрын
@@BriO853 Intel/AMD are behind because of efficiency of M1 architecture. Intel would have to go to 1-3nm to catch up with efficiency with M1 on 7nm. They gained so much ground because Apple for years was preparing this architecture on their phones (bionic), Intel/AMD will never catch-up because of limitations of x86 architecture.

@@BriO853 What? I have M1, today this is my main workstation, working with 4K monitor with build-in KVM (M28U), everything in one cable, and it has higher performance than my old I7 9th gen desktop. There is nothing that come close in terms of performance/productivity in laptops. And all of this is PASSIVELY cooled. Intel/AMD may catch up with M1 efficiency in 7-10 years, maybe.
@zeus11172 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind the performance benefits and also the battery life benefits for that matter, are only present with native arm applications. And boy, so much stuff will never have a native implementation! Everything else running through rosetta MIGHT run good enough (if at all), but at the penalty of extreme battery and RAM/SSD usage. This renders the Macbooks on par with many current laptops cause it DOES matter what applications you are using daily. BTW, even the built-in Safari browser is culprit here. Don't even try Chrome or Firefox, they will eat your M1 alive in terms of battery...

Macbooks are indeed the great laptops, there no doubt. I've been using my macbook air for 10 years without any trouble. But anyway, I am quite dissatisfied with the fragile charger cable, the unremoveble apple's softwares, the overprice spare parts, the poor specs. Recently, I decided to buy the Thinkpad t14 gen2 instead because I feel like Apple exploits the consumers too much with their high quality but overprice products. The thinkpad works much better than I expected, ram is upgradable, ssd is changeable, there is a lot of freedom here. Battery is not bad it lasts about 7+ hrs "on linux". Talking about the battery, nothing can beat the M1, but honestly, the long battery life is not that important except if you have to work somewhere without electricity for 20 hours+ then M1 is your best choice.

for general use the Macbook M1 Air is far better option. In every way. BUT if it get's broken in some way, externally or internally, you are screwed and there is also NO way of getting your data off of the chip! In my opinion, just this alone makes any Mac product a huge risk factor. This is killing me inside. I have the amd version (Ryzen 7 pro 7850u) something like that. And am thinking about the MacBook Air Only thing holding me back is the keyboard on the air. The MacBook Air is $100 Cheaper till Dec 24th ($799) My thinkpad came with a gap (screen and bezel) on the right side and the right bottom corner is popped out a bit, making a sticky noise when touching it. So do I return this laptop and get a refund? And buy the mac Or should I replace the thinkpad and let the Mac Sale go by. I really like the screen on the Mac and plan to make KZbin videos, but it’s just that keyboard holding me back The t 14 keyboard is amazing, way better than I thought it was be but the defects are killing me. I love the feel to it but somehow it attracts a lot of fingerprints and oils. What do you think? If I was to get the Mac, I plan on selling it in a year and a half and upgrade then. The build quality will always be better on the Macs. BUT they can brake unexpectedly easily! (see Rossmann's channel or experiences of mac owners) Repair or more like data recovery is practically already impossible with the M1-line. They will just give you a new one IF you have paid for Apple Care Plus. Longevity is not the best with the latest Macs that's for sure. Resale value is high though, so you can still get rid of it later if you change your mind. A Lenovo will be way harder to sell, even for half the price only 1 year after.

Intel and to a slightly lesser degree AMD are pretty embarrassing when put up against the M1. Apple does have the advantage of having all their own software running on their own hardware, but the fact a lower power part running without a fan stills stays cooler than the intel chip while outperforming it in many tasks is just insane. A cool, silent laptop is what a Thinkpad should be considering how large the case is, but Lenovo suck and I think I'm finally sick of Thinkpads. Lenovo should stop milking loyal users and spend more money on R&D to make better hardware like Apple. I'd use a Mac if I didn't need Windows for work, although I'm also a bit put off by everything being soldered, locked down and when there is a problem having to go to an Apple store to maybe get it fixed, but probably told it's going to be $900 and you might as well buy a new one.
@zeus11172 жыл бұрын
You are only talking built-in or native apps. There are so many stuff unoptimized and not natively supported, think big applications. Running under Rosetta layer requires 2-3x more battery, and way more CPU usage. It's nice to see the theoretical and rarely seen uplifts but the real world experience is with many different types of apps. I myself have an M1 Air and it is wonderful, but I am never in life getting more than 6-7 hours of battery life and it is brand new machine. Why? Cause I actually do some stuff other than browsing and wathing youtube in Safari only.
