The 10th Gen i5 in the XPS is literally the same performance wise as the 8th Gen in the MBP. No one's buying a 13" laptop for the integrated GPU lmao, and even if they are you can't do any GPU heavy tasks on either devices either way because it's an integrated GPU. Pretty much everyone will be doing CPU heavy tasks so the upgrade to 10th Gen is pointless given what you're gaining. RAM speed is the same here. I literally can't notice a difference going from DDR3 to DDR4X. You can use the efficiency argument but I didn't notice any drastic battery life gain or lower thermals with the 10nm either. Comparing the i5s GPU wise: Intel Iris Plus 645 vs G4 makes little to no difference in real life applications that are CPU+GPU mixed. You're getting roughly 10% in benchmarks going from the 645 to G4, which translates to basically little to no difference in frame rates, export, or render times; this is then further offset by better multi-core performance from the i5-8257U--remember, no application only uses the GPU or only the CPU, it's a mix of both, so optimizing GPU+CPU performance is more important than slapping on a surface level 10% higher benchmark. This is why the 8th Gen holds up vs the other 10th Gen i5 and their GPU pairs (i5-1035G7 being an exception). Most laptops use UHD or G1/G4 graphics. 2020 i5 Dell XPS: G1 graphics. Lenovo i5 ThinkPad/IdeaPads/Yogas? UHD or G1/G4 Graphics. HP i5 Spectre x360? G4 Graphics. Asus i5 Zenbooks? UHD Graphics. Acer i5 Asire and Swift? UHD and G1 Graphics. The only two laptops that use i5 G7 is Microsoft and LG so me using the most popular graphics as comparison is fair relative to the market (I would include the MBA since it also has an G7, but because of thermal limitations and a lower TDP, it performs worse irl than the 645 graphics). It's disappointing for sure how Apple isn't using the newer silicon in their base models, but compared to the overall market, the MBP is still competitive performance wise, *and outperforms the 2020 i5 XPS with the i5-1035G1.*

Kinda. I have that laptop and it's pretty rad at first, but like all new things, it wears off. The bezel-less display is stunning at first, but you get over it. I've gone on this journey the last 5 months, where I've bought all the trendiest laptops: Lenovo C940, HP Spectre X360 with OLED, XPS 2-in-1, Macbook Air, XPS 9300. I ended up keeping the Spectre for about a month until I discovered it had an electronics issue in the hinge, had to return it. By that time the 9300 was announced, and I switched to that. I got the MBAir when it came out and compared it side by side to the XPS. The XPS won. I ended up returning the 4k XPS (bad battery life) for a 1080p version (barely better battery life). But now, I just ordered this MBP, and have one more week left in my XPS return window. As cool as the XPS is, Windows drives me nuts with its weird window resizing, scaling inconsistencies. Weird Microsoft Office quirks that somehow don't exist on Office for Mac. I've kinda concluded that only laptop I've ever really loved was my old 2011 MBP. While it's not exactly what I was hoping for, this MBP is as close as it will get to that old one, now that they've fixed the keyboard. We'll see how it goes. The XPS 9300 is nearly perfect. I wish it had at least one more USB-C port. It bugs me that when it's closed and you flip it over, on the hinge you can see exposed the wire strip that connects the display to the internals (not a huge deal but it's just mildly sloppy considering how elegant the rest of it is). It also does this annoying thing where the lid will come open if the laptop is rested on the hinge. For example, in one of my briefcase style bags, it will come open sometimes if I rest it on the ground.

@@Stan_sprinkle Since you seem well versed in the different laptops, can I ask if you have any experience or any thoughts on the LG GRAM 17? I currently have that (bought on sale from Costco for about 1200ish), and I have about a week or so left in the return window. I have been thinking about replacing the LG with the HP Envy 17 laptop at Best Buy, the newer version though with the MX330 gpu. I don't game, mostly just KZbin more or less. Envy currently on sale to for 1100. Hoping to keep the chosen laptop for as long as possible as I am poor and can't afford to upgrade for the sake of upgrading. @@ryanaugustus I returned the 2-in-1 because I couldn't get used to the keyboard. The XPS 9300 clamshell has a way better keyboard and it's pretty slick. Haven't had any real "problems". But, I received the new MBP this afternoon, and after getting it all set up, I'm impressed. I installed a trial copy of Parallels with Windows... it runs Windows like a friggin champ. Pretty sure I'm gonna be keeping the Mac. Why not, when it's so easy to run both operating systems? (I tried running VMs on the new Air and the fans went crazy and it slowed down significantly. On this pro, the fans haven't even come on other than when it was doing the initial download and indexing of my files from the cloud)

@@mollerbt I don't know much about those two specifically. I think HPs overall are probably a better product. I have a soft spot for the Gram, though. I bought my wife the 14" gram when we lived in Korea, and she's been pretty happy with it. Every time I pick it up, I can't get over how light it is. I definitely was checking out the Gram lately to see if they had a model for me, but decided against them (mainly because I'm now very much determined to get away from 16:9 aspect ratios... less of a big deal on 17" models, perhaps). If you're in the US, I don't know how good LG support is. I had good experiences with HP support here in the US - but, on that note, I unfortunately needed support because the HP Spectre I bought had issues. But, HP does make solid products, I prefer their trackpads and keyboards by far over any LG keyboard I've tried. That said, my wife's had zero issues with her LG, and having something that lightweight is just so cool IMO. I don't know a ton about GPU specs - I don't game and I don't produce content. I'm in this weird niche where 90% of the time, I could get by with a MacBook Air, but when I have to run VM's for certain demos I do for work, I need the extra power to be there.

Complete opposite. Apple literally set the standards for wireless earbuds with Airpods, smartwatches with Apple watch, and tablets with iPads. @andyH_England
@andyH_England 4 жыл бұрын
@@Tass... That has changed recently, they have been refreshing more regular to the latest 10th gen. However, most Intel updates are nominal so updating every time seems a mugs game. Dell exploit that update cycle to market and sell a new laptop. Bulky it is not, sensible, you can get too small, the XPS 13 is now too small and I expect it to have heating issues. The bezels are bigger than the average but Apple will be moving to 14-inch soon with micro-LED so this Macbook is a filler before that design change. Webcams, many of us do not care hence why most OEMs do not bother, no one buys a laptop for its webcam!

I don't know why it costs more in the UK to buy this than in America. £1500 for the 512gb over here but only $1500 over there? The current exchange rate today says this should only cost less £1200 over here. And Apple has been doing this pricing with other products in recent years.

I just ordered the 10th gen i5 1TB model this morning. I was actually stuck for weeks between the Spectre X360 and XPS 13. Then Apple hit my inbox with the new 13’ and I just blindly went for it! I’m really looking forward to getting it. It’ll be a nice upgrade from my 2017 model. Well done for flying the tech flag for Britain 🇬🇧

Would you mind giving your advice on a specific case? I use a bunch of different apps and keep windows and tabs open. That's just the way I like to work. Should I get the $1500 and upgrade the RAM to 16 for a total of $1600, or just shoot for the $1800 version with the 10th gen processor that comes standard with 16 GB RAM?
@Antonioiturbides
@Antonioiturbides 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly if you are dead set on the pro if you are willing to spend 1600 on that model you might as well just get the base 1800 model. You get the new 10th gen processor, 16gb of ram, 512gb SSD, 2 internal fans instead of 1, and double the ports.

From my own experience, I have found macOS quite good at memory management. I still have a 2014 Macbook Air with the Dual-core Intel i5 Haswell chip, Intel HD 5000 graphics and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. For the general everyday tasks, it has not slowed down on me once. It also does not get too choppy editing 1080p video in iMovie. The only time it has really got in my way is working on a large Wix website in the site builder, or editing a spreadsheet in Excel that has millions of records. I have happily used it for 6 years, and will likely use it until next year.

I wonder why everyone is complaining about the 8th generation. 90% of the users won't see any difference between the 8th and the 10th generation. For the same price as the previous one, we have better storage and better keyboard. And it is still way better than the Air with almost the same price.

@@minirayray123 I have an HP 2230s laptop that is 12 years old, it still works, kind of, the touch pad and wifi do no longer work, so I have to use a mouse and a wifi dongle, and it's slow as hell. The thing is in the garage and not used that much. Now I have had the MBP 16" 16MB/1TB for a week (a work machine), my first Mac ever. It's not perfect, but the greatest thing is something that I have never seen in any YT video mentioned; the colours / colour profiles for the built in/external displays, my eyes just fucking love what the picture looks like. I'm thinking of maybe getting the lowest spec MBP 13 for my personal use. The 16 GB RAM is just +125 EUR, so maybe that, but I think 8 GB is probably enough, I very randomly use Adobe PS and Premiere and I can always use my work machine to do the heavy work.
@JohnKing-lw2sb
@JohnKing-lw2sb 4 жыл бұрын
This is somewhat of a poor comparison as you are making out the extra cost of the 10th gen is purely for the processor, better graphics and two more ports but that is simply not the case. The base spec 13" is 8GB RAM and 256GB drive. The 2020 10th Gen is 512GB and 16GB of RAM. If you add 16GB and 512GB to the base model its an extra 400 quid which takes the price difference between base spec and 10th gen to 100 pounds. The extra 100 pounds is well worth paying for the 10th gen processor, better cooling, better graphics and two more ports.

Thank you. Ditching PC's which I've had since the 386--many years. Why? PC customer service, and tired of replacing them every 4-5 years due to serious mechanical issues, keyboards not working, serious battery errors, motherboards crashing, and complicated and long CS waits with "iffy" knowledge. My daughter has had her MAC for 10 years--and I purchased 2-5 PC's during that time (Dell, HP, etc). In the long run it will save money. Using my husbands MacBook Pro as I speak because i think my HP is crashing. The mouse is crazy on google maps, but I'll figure it out. Maybe.

As someone who has only used Macs for 10 years, I'm ready to switch, the MBP and iMac haven't changed in over 8 years and they are charging exhortation fees for ridiculously "under speced" machines. $1,600 for 228 GB SSD and 8 gigs of ram in 2020? With only TWO ports and no SD Card Slot? Sorry but no way, I'm going to have to suck it up and go back to windows. Worse thing is, PCs are following Apple's price gouging, but at least you get "better" specs and PORTS in the Windows world.
