@universalstarman20126 жыл бұрын
heroofhonor the video is bang on for taking your MBP apart. I’ve changed the HDD to SDD added RAM and changed fans etc. But never taken it down to the motherboard... until last night. I’ve ordered my Thermal Paste and cleaning materials from Amazon which should be here tomorrow. I’m Down to do this on Wednesday. Then I’m going to sell my MBP as I’ve read this fix could be good for anything from a year, six months, a month to a week (or even a day) for the issue to return. I had the Motherboard swapped with the Apple Program for this MacBook Pro. It’s done its job for me... so I will report back post the fix mid week. If you strip yours down you’ll see the Thermal Paste is gone... plus my MBP was over heating loads... the SDD was making the processor work over time... so for me I’m back on my iMac... and getting a new MBP (£2.600 🤦🏻♂️). Will come back and let you know. My advice strip yours Dow ready for the Heat process and TP... my MBP was filthy inside! So I’ve cleaned inside the case and used Compressed Air to blow the dust away. Best of luck!!

THIS WORKED for my late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" (8,1) running the latest OS it can, high sierra 10.13.6. I'll fill in some info gaps this video didn't cover (it didn't have to - the video's great, thank you Sebastian). Mine had awful vertical green lines, and the screen would just go full white when you'd expect to see the progress bar at boot. I was having to enter the nvram command almost weekly, it seemed. I learned that OS updates and use of bootable drives must have triggered card switches. For me, that is not acceptable so I had to find a hardware-based solution like this. Plus, Obviously I want to sell it, or at least use the video output, so why not try to repair it? So here's how I did -- I used a cheap TXINLEI 8858 hot air reflow kit I got on amazon, and set the "force" (blowing power) to 5 and the temp to 250. I set a timer for 2:30 and moved the air to the AMD GPU's underside for about one minute, as he did here. I then did another 2:30 on the top side of the gpu, making small, slow circles around the chip. I gave everything 3-4 minutes to cool, then placed artic silver 5 on each chip, as seen here. Reassembled, and it booted up using the AMD graphics! There were some discoloration issues seen in my top menu bar (black and blurry), so I downloaded GfxCardStatus just like this guy did, and made sure it was set to run at startup. Now, worst case, I can definitely get into my OS even if it looks slightly impaired due to an unwanted card switch, click the GfxCardStatus menu bar icon, and we're good to go. It's only week 1 for me, but several reboots directly to the AMD gpu and it's fine. I will update this if I see any failures. I actually had two of these macs, and I approached one with the popular theory that the GPU capacitor is bad, so I ordered the exact capacitor online and gave it a reflow. This was 3+ hours of work de-soldering, re-balling, and using flux to replace all the tiny stuff that blew around inevitably due to hot air, and it didn't work. So give this simple reflow a try using the 'recipe' above if you have a graphics issue on a mac. I spent hundreds on gear and 40+ hours researching this. Don't be me! Skip to this easy heat trick.
@xConundrumx6 жыл бұрын
Next time reheat it with a much lower temperature that is not enough to melt the leadfree solder ... You will see it (most likely some chips might need a little more coaxing as others) works too even though the solder never melted. The (temporary) fix is not the reflow, which is what you are doing (you are not reballing here), it is the fact that you have heated the gpu chip. That is why this fix lasts only a short while. As you say yourself it is badly manufactured and temperature sensitive.

My Macbook pro A1286 have same issues, when I check online, find that 's GPU issues, lots of people tell me I need to replace it and the price worth $289, so, I am still thinking what do I do next. At the same time, I saw this video, give me a new idea, why not, I can try. Finally, I have done it. That's really helpful and saves money. I really appreciate your post in this video.
@sgaleazzi4 жыл бұрын
As long as you run the program that I indicate in the comments to prevent the computer from using the AMD chip again, you should not have problems. I have seen machines repaired by Apple where they change the AMD GPU chip but in a while they fail again. The flaw is in the chip design and it comes back sooner or later to fail don't spend money on it. What I added that in this video is not seen is kapton tape to separate the surface of the chip with the heatsink since when the processor of the machine raises the temperature it is transferred to the GPU and can make it fail again. If you do not have Kapton tape, use some material that insulates from the temperature. Good luck and I hope it works for you like me!

Well back on the 18th of January my 2011 MBP 15” Screen went and then I researched if there was a fix and Sebastian has it nailed on here. The only aspects missed off was how long to wait from heating the GPU for 5 mins at 250c. So I had a search and there’s another clip where the guy waited 2 mins. Mine was around 4 mins after I’d finished the heating to applying the new Thermal Paste. Then I put the motherboard back in and fixed all the cables in place (some are very fiddly!!!) but... it worked. Just going to update from El Cap to High Sierra (the most this version can take). And walk my dogs while that’s installing... I will come back tomorrow morning with an update.

SourceReaper I sold it as soon as I’d fixed it. It worked the evening I did it... and then the next day it worked fine and then I sold it. This is a fix yes. But as to how long the Mac will last is anyone’s guess as it all depends on what apps you run, how much you put the processor under with graphic image apps like photoshop or animation apps could cause it to fail again... hence me selling it. My thought was I had a dead Mac worth £0 - or I fix it (cost £60 in kit) and then sell it. Sold it for £400. Up to you what you want to do... good luck.

Please follow only that particular portion to avoid confusions and messing up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHepgZ5piMqEmLM Step 2: Now to disable the EFI variable to choose only the Intel HD, download Archlinux and write it to a USB drive with Rufus or Unetbootin app. Then follow the instruction to disable the AMD GPU from the "description are" in the below youtube link. PLEASE CHECK THE DESCRIPTION TO SEE THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW THE VIDEO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4mnfGp9Z9WHftU That's it and you are ready to go!!

@Tinh Do Glad to know that it finally worked out for you!👍 You can verify this by downloading gfxcardstatus app and try switching to discrete graphics and if it doesn't switch to AMD GPU then you have is working prefect.
@randomscience4k6 жыл бұрын
Tinh Do ohh okay. So you need to do an internet recovery. Also remember each time you update this needs to be applied. One important thing that I forgot to ask. This method that I said is applicable only up to Sierra. For high Sierra it’s slightly different if I remember and also this hack will disable the brightness and sleep function in High Sierra. Up to Sierra everything should be fine. Also from El Capitan you should boot to recovery and go to Terminal and disable SIP protection with the following command without quotes “sudo csrutil disable” and press enter and reboot. Now you can follow the steps I mentioned.

While it is true that this is not reballing, it is not true that reflow will only work for a short time. Just as there are 2011 MBPs that have still not suffered a GPU failure, reflowing this same solder can result in joints that are just as stable (or instable) as the original joint, and can last years.

After some research and contacting Apple, turns out there's a known issue with the Graphics Processor. Any help you can provide would be appreciated: Best way to clean the GPU and Processor with contact cleaner or alcohol? Is the idea to re-flow cold solder on the contacts of the GPU @ 250 degrees Celsius, both sides and both chips? After re-flow, should I let sit for some time or should I just reflow for 5 minutes as you noted then assemble immediately? Thanks a lot in advance.

I re-balled the chip, cleaned it up and applied paste and it works good now. Only issue I have a short 1 second delay during start up, the screen freezes up for maybe a second or 2.. but that's about it. Thanks for the help.. so far, so good. ! :-)

@sgaleazzi7 жыл бұрын

@@cneedelman1 I Had the same problem as you in HIGH SIERRA. Did you solve it already? If no, follow these instructions (100% guaranteed it will work in High Sierra). Here’s the fix: Remove the hard drive from the MacBook, and plug it to a PC running linux, or another Mac (A SATA to USB cable is necessary here). Now we’re going to move the AMD drivers, as described elsewhere OPEN TERMINAL (EVERYTHING WILL BE DONE THERE) On the “external” volume, browse to the “Root” directory (IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO BROWSE TO ROOT DIRECTORY IN TERMINAL, DO SOME INTERNET RESEARCH. I had to do it, but do not remember how it is done. But you can use the command line "pwd" to know if you are in the correct folder!) Sudo mkdir AMD_Kexts cd AMD_Kexts sudo mv /Volumes/i7_SSD/System/Library/Extensions/AMD* sudo rm -rf /Volumes/i7_SSD /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/ sudo mkdir /Volumes/i7_SSD /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/ sudo touch /Volumes/i7_SSD /System/Library/Extensions/ Unmount the “external” drive (This can be done in disk utility or even in the finder) Put it back in the broken Mac, it should boot with crazy ass graphics. Open terminal in your computer with the crazy graphics, and put this exactly command line. sudo nvram fa4ce28d-b62f-4c99-9cc3-6815686e30f9:gpu-power-prefs=%01%00%00%00 Reboot. Everything will be fixed. (But you will loose the ability to adjust brightness... There is a way to fix it, but I need to do further research on how to, and if it is possible to correct it in this method)

Hi Sebastian, Just finished following all your steps and for the first time in over a year, the laptop is working perfectly. This happened to my 2008 17 inch. I used 120C as one youtuber suggested you only need to. Now my wife 2011 is doing the same thing. Back to the 120C heat gun. I used a laser beam temperature censor gun to monitor the temp. The gun was set much higher than the 120C. Just make sure the surface is 120C to 140C No higher. I'll let you know how my 2011 goes. Also there is better thermal paste out there. Any suggestions? I forget the best brand? Note: my 2008 has been working perfectly now for over a year with the 120C for 5 minutes. The youtuber that suggested the 120 is some guy that owns a shop and curses a lot. Look him up if you can stand the swearing. (He's just passionate about it not being called re-balling and using too high of a temperature) He says it's not the connections to the processor it's the processor itself. By the way my 2011 had a new motherboard put in 2 years ago by Apple, no cost. Good on em for that, but come on... blown again in 2 years? I see David Camilo below has said it's not re-balling it's reflowing. As for it not being a recommended fix, the computer is of no use as is. Junk. So go for it... just use 120C first. Not 250. I know it's a lot of work to take apart and put back... to find out it didn't work.. then do it again with a higher temp. Has anyone had to do this? Like I said, 120 worked for me and Mr YouSwearTuber guy really suggests it. Good luck! Other than the processor these macs are great.

Forgot to mention I downloaded MacFan control and set it up to run the fans to keep everything below 60c at least. At one point i just turned them on full blast full time rather than have it become an anchor for my dingy. So make sure you no longer trust the stock fan speeds that Apple sets... because.. IT DIDN'T WORK.

This adds up to a problem and is that the computer gets very slow. The definitive and that I solved the problem definitely is to isolate the GPU of the heatsink with capton tape and obviously use the program as soon as the Macbook starts to prevent it from taking temperature!

This is a trash fix. To reball you need soldering paste and a stencil then a heat gun. Then affix the reballed GPU accordingly. This is not the right way. This is reflow and it does not last because the solder joints are cracked and brittle from years of heat. You need new solder balls or paste my man.
@sgaleazzi6 жыл бұрын
neo217041 It worked for me and many people. likewise doing reballing would not work either because the chip is faulty! the only solution is to perform this method and not reuse the AMD GPU.
