Why shouldn't it reconize the CD drive? it's still parallel IDE. You come way more far than I did when I tried this on my brandnew MacBook from 2006 - long before Bootcamp was in the making anyway. The Win98-CD bootet, but I couldn't make a choice becauce the Boot Loader didn't react to the keyboard at all.

Definitely more realistic than on AppleTV because the first AppleTV uses PCC architecture like very old macs and the 3 newer models use ARM like iPhones and other smartphones, but the PS4 uses x86_64 which is what PCs use. Have you tried formatting the hard drive to fat16 because ms dos doesn't really work with fat 32 and so doesn't the 95 or 98 setup either.

As far as I know all macbook's from 2007 earlier have IDE disc drives, I think it was 2009 when it changed to SATA. I may be incorrect but under OSX System Information the disc drive is labeled as ATA.

The reading of the CD drive was that Windows XP only supported IDE as well so system accommodate for it it just like it did for XP

Does that MacBook have an 8042-compatible keyboard controller? If not, that would be why 1. the A20 line wouldn't activate and 2. why the keyboard wouldn't work in many programs. EDIT: I think the reason why it did work in Win98 DOS is because the keyboard is USB and Win98 might have had USB HID drivers. Also, just did some research and apparently the MacBook doesn't have an 8042-compatible controller (see github.com/spevans/swift-project1/blob/master/README.md, search for 8042)

I think in the old Macbooks the Optical Drive is still IDE so thats probably why it was able to load the drivers

You might be able to get somewhere by installing a full version of grub2 into the macbook EFI partition and then use it to force low memory and ATA mode.

Hey Druaga1 I may have an idea for a future video... I'm not sure if this has been done before but maybe you can try start with the earliest version of Windows that you can and upgrade to the next one using the upgrade versions of Windows and so continuously on actual hardware if possible. Otherwise a VM should be fine.

"A20 line" or "A20 gate" has something to do with keyboard controller, and that's why keyboard doesn't work in DOS applications and Win98 setup cannot start...

+mlodzin90 it's because the BIOS emulation layer of the mac is only projected to just load an not so reliant on BIOS operating system such as any version of windows nt,linux,etc. Since DOS relies on the BIOS to run it will be either very limited in fuctionality or not work at all.

IIRC Windows 98 isn't very nice with HDD over 32GB... Also, you might want to try booting with DOS 7.1 It is the same version as W98/SE DOS which might work with the macbook in question. Then proceed to install W98 or whatever.

I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 MATE on an '09 MacBook. Trickiest part was getting the webcam to work, but even that was pretty simple. At the end of the day, I had Skype, Dropbox, LibreOffice, Chrome (with Netflix), and pretty much everything else you'd need for a fully functional computer in 2016.

Windows 98 don't like sata harddrives I've tried loads of times all so using new memory is a problem with trying to install memory management keeps saying insufficient memory

Actually did manage to get the windows 98 installer to boot from FreeDOS on my 2008 macbook, but it croaks and freezes like what happened with druaga trying to open a file in the ms dos editor.

Seems like 8042 (PS/2 stuff) keyboard controller isn't there. A20 line, reset line and of course keyboard and mouse were all using this chip and SMM emulation of it is probably crappy as hell. If anything tries to talk with hardware direcly it simply doen't work.

The fact that this machine doesn't accept anything different from XP is weird. I don't know what's happening here, but back then I had a Unibody Aluminum MacBook and I was able to install Ubuntu with no problems. I had Windows 7 installed on it too. A friend of mine had a white MacBook (Core Duo model, I don't know if this is the same or the Core2Duo model) and we also managed to install Ubuntu on it with no problems.

the mac bios isn't sophisticated enough to be able to lock you out of specific programs plus I've run various non windows operating systems on the white macbooks without any issues.

Nope. 9x died with Windows Me. Windows 2000 was basically Windows NT 5.0. Windows 2000 just happened to still be considered a workstation OS. It wasn't until XP that the NT kernel became consumer-standard.

You can always try to install rEFInd Boot Manager to replace (not permanently) Apples EFI bootloader. It supports BIOS/MBR type Operating Systems a little better.

since you did use hirens boot cd 15.2 just select mini winxp and open the program winntsetup that will solve the install issue

Does it use the Windows XP boot manager after XP is installed or use bootcamp or some other Apple thing instead ? It is possible to convert a boot sector to a file and then boot Dos\Windows 98 trough Windows XP boot manager, maybe that is the way to go

You mentioned something about the computer only loading xp install files or other simple, core applications. I think this could be for security. I think it's specifically looking for xp (or vista?) install files and if it's not those, it disables the keyboard and any inputs in case it's malicious

MrOpenGL I wasn't trying to make excuses. I genuinely think it's a protection that COULD be in the system. It allows specific versions of window OS's, and could double check that by verifying the install files. If it doesn't recognize them, the computer COULD disable inputs to prevent hacking. It's just a possible explanation given what happened.

to install it, once you did the first setup, skip the "Press any key to boot from CD..." screen and then the windows xp boot screen should appear. wait until it boots and setup #2 should appear. good luck

Apple has *not* sabogated anything. Instead, older versions of Windows (up to XP SP1) are missing critical components required inter alia for Intel Macintoshes, such as S-ATA and certain USB drivers.
