Hailing from Iceland and here are some fun facts heh - my dad did all the filming in the original english video version - it features the original Blue Lagoon (not the artificial one that tourists are paying a fortune to go to now and 6$ for a towel) ... she has always been down to earth - Iceland is small and last time we met was on coach flying from LDN to KEF ... no business class, she was making music just on the plane and I had the isle seat next to her and just ez and chatting - she has always supported "underground" music scenes and been very "punk" from the start - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHe0gYF3pdx9fbc

...the first time I ever heard of Bjork was with this song when I heard it on 88.5 college radio back in the 80's and didn't know what I was listening to, because it was so unique, but the next day I went out and bought their 'tape'. And this too, is one of my favorite songs by The SugarCubes, along with their hit 'Hit' and 'Delicious Demon'

Same here, it was a run-out-and-buy song, straight off the bat, loved its uniqueness. Planet was another favourite of theirs.

Very strange, I've also never heard the Icelandic version of this song, even though I have been acquainted with the English version of it since probably 1990... at least the vocal parts that are in glossolalia (singing in sort of a made up language, usually used in reference to speaking in tongues) are the same ;) It is quite interesting although very strange to hear the English words in my head as it goes along, haha. You should certainly listen to the English version too... as it is beautiful in its own way. "They're smoking cigars..."

Bjorks first album was actually in 1977. She was sent off to music school when she was 5 and learned there for over a decade mostly German classical music.

Fun fact: even before The Sugarcubes, Björk was in an Icelandic gothic-punk band called “Kukl” (Icelandic for “witchcraft”), and were signed to legendary anarchopunk band Crass’s record label. Kukl only released two albums, ‘The Eye’ in 1984 and ‘Holidays In Europe’ in 1986, before dissolving. As Björk herself basically put it, she was “no longer interested in the anger of punk rock”. But if you can, you should definitely give Kukl a listen. It’s Björk as I’m fairly positive you’ve NEVER heard her before. In particular, the song “Dismembered” (or the Icelandic version “Söngull”) is an excellent starting point. Happy listening! 🖤

before Eivor ( Faroe Islands ), Aurora ( Norway ), Diana Ankudinova ( Russia ), Angelina Jordan ( Norway ) and other great vocalists from "the frozen North" started giving us music in native languages, there were the Sugarcubes and Bjork from Iceland......

The audio quality is much better if you listen from Spotify, but I'm glad you chose the Icelandic version as she appears more comfortable and _free_ singing in her native language. Especially in those howlings which, in my opinion, come across as a little bit reserved in the English version, but since you're usually interested in analyzing the lyriks, here's the English translation: She lives in this house over there, has her world outside it. Grapples the earth with her fingers and her mouth, she's five years old. Thread worms on a string, keeps spiders in her pocket, collects fly-wings in A jar scrubs horse flies and pinches them on a line. she's got one friend He lives next door, they listen to the weather, he knows how many freckles she's got, She scratches his beard. she's painting huge books, glues them together, They saw a big raven; it glided down the sky, she touched it. Today's a birthday, they're smoking cigars, he got a chain of flowers, Sows a bird in her knickers, they're smoking cigars ... lie in the bathtub ... chain of flowers ...

I heard the English version first, 30 plus years ago so it is really strange to hear it in Icelandic even knowing it is her native tongue.

I saw the Sugarcubes first gig in the UK at Kentish Town and Country Club, London in 1988, then again in Woolwich a few weeks later. Been a fan since I first heard this. Also before Sugarcubes she was in KUKL and there are 2 albums "The Eye" 1984 and "Holidays in Europe(The Naughty Nought) in 1986

@@MaceAroundTheWorld her music video for "all is full of love" is named under the best music videos of all the time. directed by Chris cunningham in 1998, its a milestone in music video production. "who is it" is also a stunner. she also won an award for the best actor in cannes 2000 for the role of selma. the movie was directed by lars von trier and is called "dancer in the dark". if you get deeper into her work, prepare yourself for a long and exciting journey!

She is one exotic bird. Her band was as well. I caught them in their US debut on SNL and was immediately hooked. Finally something original, after so long in the desert. The strangely named "Of Monsters and Men" are another Icelandic band, takk fyrir, and also doing exotic songs.

She had damaged vocal folds in this particular recording, in the english recording she didn't so it sounds kinda better. (still, if you're a singer and trying to sound like Björk, please DON'T. She had a REALLY bad vocal technique and she had to go through surgery a few years ago because of it)

She was singing this song, like that, in 1988. She again sang it, nearly note for note, in 2006. She broke her voice on the Volta tour; she wasn't in vocal decline until then. So I don't think its fair to say that her non existent technique led to her voice basically breaking. It broke because she overextended it on a harsh tour.

The glossolalia parts sound almost like she had listened to some Liz Frasier (Cocteau Twins) or Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) and I bet with her having done goth music before she was acquainted with both Liz and Lisa. Liz usually sings words in weird pronunciations, etc, but Lisa truly sings her own made up language that is usually referred to as glossolalia.

Hello from Russia, Mace. React to Maxim Fadeev & Noraur Barserghyan (duduk), please. Maxim didn't give concerts for 25 years because he lost his hearing. A special podium was created for him, where, in addition to the musical equipment, there are special indicators that constantly highlight the tempo of the song and show the beginning of the verse, chorus and losses. The very same sound and tone is received by the brain through the bone conduction of the head. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJuYgISNiMabeLM Link to the whole concert here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWTQZ4aGhbachtU
