That church you went into was a great find! I looked it up. Holy Baptistery of Saint Lydia of Philippi, completely in 1974. It definitely looks new. It's Byzantine Revival, which has dominated exclusively in Greece after WWII, and the "fat" shape of the church is very post-WWII (before WWII, churches are almost exclusively long aisled basilicas). What's remarkable about this church is that the art inside is exquisitely done. Most post-WWII church art is very low-quality. Until about WWII, it was common for the church to hire artists that had formal art school training, and they would do all kinds of art, from Byzantine Revival to Neoclassical and Romanticism, Baroque in the Ionian, etc. After WWII. the church stuck to just one style of art, its own interpretation of "Byzantine" and all artists were trained by the church in that style. So, in the 60s, 70s, we got all these cookie-cutter mediocre churches. This one is very exceptional for its time, because the art is stunning; this artist did an excellent take on Byz Revival, and the architecture is great too. Great find!! Metsovo: that church is medieval, but it was destroyed and modified over the centuries. The exterior is typical local architecture. Interior: Epirus has these subtle Renaissance influences, because nearby is the Ionian coast/islands which had the Renaissance under Venetian control, and some of that influence traveled to inland Epirus. So, the interior architecture, art, frescoes, etc, are a mishmash of medieval-Byzantine, Renaissance, and 19th & 20th centuries, as they kept repairing/modifying the church over the centuries. Glad you stepped inside that one too!

@@aokiaoki4238 Coastal Epirus, yes. Hence I pointed out "Ionian coast/islands" 🙂 Skylosophos led a revolt against the Ottomans, and fought against them with Spanish help; this is very common across Ottoman Greece, with either Venetian help, or Austrian help, Spanish, etc. But my point is simply the *art* history of Epirus.

Lydia was the first European Christian, who was baptized by the Apostle Paul. On the Zygactis river, west of Philippi and at the border of the settlement of Lydia, the Holy Baptistery of Agia Lydia was built in 1972, following the inspiration of the then Metropolitan of Philippi, Neapolis and Thassos, Alexander. It soon became internationally known and is a pole of attraction for believers who came for pilgrimage or for baptism from every corner of the earth. The Church dedicated to Saint Lydia, gathers the faithful to honor Lydia the Philippian Apostle on May 20 every year, performing adult baptisms in the open-air Baptistry of the Zygactis river.

It was lovely to see tne area, and so glad you liked it: I live half an hour East of Kavala, near Chrysoupol. I hope you return, as theres so much more in Kavala, and East Macedonia and Thrace as a whole. Keramoti, tne port to Thassos, has an amazing 5km long sandy beach with pine forest and beautiful clear water. Thassos, of course, needs no introduction.... just stunning! And a great ancient theatre and acropolis at the capital, Limenas. Inland, theres the Kotza Orman, a unique riverside forest. You missed out big time not going to Xanthi: the old city is beautiful: mansions, mosques and churches. The air bnbs in the old city are very elegant too. The scenery at Nestos Gorge ( Stena Nestou) at Toxotes/ Stathmos is so photgenic, and you can climb it easily using the path carved into the side. Down by the coast at the Nestos Delta thrre are brackish lagoons, Lakes Vistonida and Ismarida, where you can see pelicans, spoonbills and flocks of flamingos , plus a picturesque monastery and church " floating " on the lake via a long wooden causeway. There are hot springs nearby, at Potamia. ( And also up in the mounttains at Thermes.) There's also Abdera in this area, a pretty village with a nice archaeological museum an a ruined classical city which was the home of philosopher Democritus. Komotini, on the way to Alexandroupoli, is worth a visit for the old bazaar with narrow alleyways and two old mosques , a large park with the Sword Monument, which is a war memorial, and the local sweet, soutzouk loukouma, which is walnut Turkish Delight. I've probably missed out loads of places as there is just so much to see, and some great beaches too. Thanks for the video, happy travels!

I was wondering if you managed to visit the museum of Vergina ( Aigae) with the artifacts of King Philip's tomb. It is the equivelant of king Tut s tomb for Greek standards

Also Alexandroupoli in named after King Alexander the 1st in 1920, so not related to Alexander the Great. Cities founded by Alexander the Great are called Alexandria, like the one in Egypt

Η Αλεξανδρούπολη είναι τυπική άσχημη μεταπολεμική πόλη. Δεν αξίζει να πάει ένας τουρίστας που έχει περιορισμένο χρόνο στην Ελλάδα.

Thnx for visiting Macedonia Gabriel. I live in Athens but that is my origins and its always nice to see from there. Its fantastic how history ages are mixing over there. You mentioned Alexandroupolis and I wonder how come a nature lover like you have never been to Samothraki (as far as I know you havent)? ( ps. About "Konstantinoupolis" they call it Eastern Roman Empire but only Greeks mourn for the loss of Byzantium).

Cool Gabriel! Will you also visit Thrace region? You will like Xanthi also in that region! Beautiful city and multicultural
