sir in case of shear failure in cotter, knuckle joint we use to take two shear planes but here in shear failure of butt joint y u considered only one?

Why the welds are always weak in shear?? Which factors decides that???

Material. Ductile materials are weak in shear and brittle materials are weak in tension. Usually,Weld materials are compositions of ductile materials. Hence, weak in shear.

Sir we are calculating the maximum force that can apply on welded material, but we are not bothered about the plate strength (As we are taken the plate strength in case of riveted joints) why??? Hope you will answer this question.....
