Some other Bands that fit in that era would be Faith No More or Life of Agony or - you mentioned it halfway - White Zombie. :) P.S.: I love to see Judson rocking.

Totally with Richard on Halo, one of the best tracks from probably my favourite Machine Head album. I'd LOVE to hear Judson's reaction to the dueling solos from Clenching the Fists of Dissent. Those classically inspired runs are just too damn awesome. And after he's had his fill of The Blackening, Through the Ashes of Empires and all that stuff, then it'll be time to broadside him completely with some Burning Red era Rob Flynn vocal gymnastics. A little Desire to Fire or From this Day perhaps? XD

You're right in that they got better technically over time, though one of my favorites is one of their most simplistic songs "My Misery" off the Demon Knight night soundtrack. It's extremely difficult to find the song online though (the right version). If you ever want to do it, hit me up, and I can send it to you; I have the soundtrack.version. Lyrically, my favorite song of theirs is "In Comes the Flood". It's just so relatable (especially here in the states). "I AM Hell"... now that's an epic song of theirs! Also White Zombie > than Rob Zombie. The music went from, well... music (with some sampling, but it was cool and different) to all sampling with a sprinkling of music. His stuff now is so overproduced with literal noise there's nothing there to enjoy. It's like listening to tv static. White Zombie though... they have two albums that are (in my humble opinion) back to back gemstones in La Sexorcisto... and Astro-Creep 2000.

Man, I loved this album back in my early teen years. I even learned to play this song on guitar. I can't say this album (or "The More Things Change..." which I also loved) have survived the test of time for me all that well, though. They're still good, just that having expanded my musical horizons into more extreme metal as I reached my late teens and the decades of being involved in the metal scene since just makes it seem far more simplistic and far less impactful than when my uninitiated ears first heard this album in the mid 90ies. The drumming on this album is probably my favorite part... but going from bands like First Fragment, Origin, Emperor and Archspire back to this make it seem tame in comparison!

Screaming, clean singing, harsh vocals, etc. Keep up the great content! PS: With all you said about Rob Zombie, we’d still love to see you and Judson do a reaction or 2 to a Rob Zombie or White Zombie song!

@_Helm_ 2 ай бұрын
to help, all of this stuff is post-thrash in the very literal sense, it comes out of thrash technique but it isn't thrash, it has divergent aims to thrash, etc. Like post-punk to punk. So all this stuff was called 'power groove', 'groove metal', 'industrial metal' (I kid you not, metalheads in the 90s were stupid when it came to other genres) and all sorts of things and it's a wide umbrella meant to catch anything from Prong to Coroner to Machine Head and Pantera et al, all these bands thought at the time that metal was dead or dying as a trend and did not consider themselves straight-up metal bands in the Judas Priest sense anymore, at least from a certain period onwards. Main dude in Machine Head comes from a very thrashy band called Exhorder (that Pantera ripped off). Only retroactively do we rehabilitate this power groove stuff as part of the broad heavy metal canon and only in an uneasy way (because metal didn't die it turns out), and at the time all this stuff that sounded like nu metal - or became nu metal - was anathema to actual metalheads often. There's a lot of great expressive and experimental music that comes out of thrash that didn't become nu metal to make a comparison (you really should listen to Coroner, they are a metal band so far ahead of the curve they still sound like they come from the future). I don't mean to tell you 'you should call this post-thrash' as these other names have been ingrained in the history of the culture and I actually care very little to talk about genre names etc. I am trying to explain the historical context of this kind of music to you: it's thrash people growing up and making their sound crossover more towards hip hop, hardcore, alternative metal etc because metal was dying. The emphasis on groove meant the deconstruction of the choppy thrash riff. A LOAD of mid90s successful bands with a more broad sound come from early speed metal or thrash roots (you'd be really surprised if you go looking in lineups). Still think this is a great song. Striking riffs, interesting riff variations and I think the drummer steals the show. The vocal is unconvincing, because this dude was generally unconvincing.

Perhaps go a bit more obscure with some early Exhorder, as kind of exploring some sort of roots of the groove-bent thrash that was certainly influential on Pantera (who acknowledge them as an influence to which Exhorder claimed that Pantera is of course not a rip off and that they worked for their well deserved fame much more than Exhorder back in the day). Just a suggestion.

I could never really get into Machine Head, closest I got was with The Blackening. It would be a fantastic album if it just had the fat trimmed, but several of the songs just kinda... keep going. They don't really "drag" badly and don't feel obviously padded with chorus spam or something so it isn't as bad as some other bands/albums, but still could use some time in editing. Then again, as I get older I find myself enjoying more EPs and 35-ish minute albums that don't waste a lot of time. I much prefer the "leave 'em wanting more" approach.

Never understood the fuzz with album… I think it’s too “groove” for my taste. But I’ll take Vio-lence any day of week.

Rob is great on guitar, not so much at singing. They kill it live, so many good riffs. I would argue Lamb of of God could be considered groove metal, Ashes of the Wake especially
