The point about the riffs being played underneath the vocal melodies is absolutely correct. You and your friend are missing each other, possibly because one is trained and the other isn't. But the progressions that Dave plays underneath his vocals are ridiculous and nowhere near just a simple matter or "easy enough" to play along.

Nice to see VIldhjarta on this channel! Because you wanna hear this music without the Vocals they released the entire album only instrumental, and I get it, their music is too complicated thats why it's nice to dedicate your listening only on the instruments.

That track surpised me constantly in a good way. Very musically driven, very interesting, and definitely a band I'm going to check out more. Also, great radiohead cover on piano at the start! And actually, Judson's comment about expecting the music to burst back into the soundscape after the solo vocals wasn't far off....when approahed from an album perspective vs single track. But the way they come back in at the start of the next song is also different...reminds me a bit of tool+sepultera

ABR is awesome, and Christmas Burns Red is incredible every year. I've driven up to Lancaster all the way from Tennessee the past four years, with those shows making up 6 of the 10 times I've seen ABR live (CBR is usually two different nights where ABR plays both nights). Great choice, and one of the better bands to take a deep dive into.
