Can this teaching cyclotron be used with positive and negative ion sources?

Is there any protection against PLC lockup such as a charge pump monitor (watchdog making sure the program continues to toggle an output)? In the industry I worked in, ensuring that the PLC(s) were still running their programs was a critical requirement.
