Hi Pete, just to say thanks mate for your videos. Dad was a RN engineer working in weapons, so was very secretive about his skills. So I have lathes and such left about, but no knowledge of working them. Now i'm getting closer to retiring, your videos are helping me learn how to be 1/50th of the engineer he was on this equipment. That'll do me :-).. Working with metal is amazing, so like Tubal Cain himself perhaps I can also become a master of this mysterious art. Many thanks again

With a little tweaking, you can use the compound rest to turn radii on the lathe. I used to make ball screws for punch press this way.

I made a tool similar to this a few years ago for a chen-yeh 450G lathe, very similar design and construction except I used carbide tooling. Cut steel and aluminum balls with ease. Fantastic since I made mine to mount in the toolpost it can be used for ball and radius easily. I think the largest diameter ball I tried cutting was about 5".
@mrpete2226 жыл бұрын
Thank you, that is interesting
@TheMadManPlace8 жыл бұрын
I saw a "quick set" method where a tool the diameter of the finished ball was machined and a spigot the size of the hole in the fitting. Place the tool into the fitting and tighten, move the cutter until it is touching the tool, lock it and remove the tool and that is it. If you need a size you do not have, make one quickly. Thanks for the video and be well.

Mr. Pete, I made a ball turning attachment in my shop that produces the same type of ball on a threaded shaft. I've got a "big curious" now, as Justin Wilson would say" about whether a complete round ball can be turned without the threaded hole in the end? I think it can be done but it will take "some doing."

Yes

What if you put a side rake on the cutting tool and only cut in one direction? Meaning you'd have to back out the cross feed, swing the cutter back arount to start, and reset the depth of cut?

Love all your videos - why don't you slot the two hole where the upright meets the piece coming from the cross feed, and then put a third hole for a set screw, then it would be height adjustable? I know this is an older video but , could you wrap a rubber band around your cutting tool and one on the shaft in the chuck. this should help with the harmonics and help eliminate some or all of the chatter. just a thought. here's a crazy idea: instead of bolting the fixture to the cross slide, how about sticking the tab you normally bolt to the cross slide into a tool holder for either an aloris tool post or an emco/axa type? then you could adjust center height without shims

That might work, but may make it too high.

we had the commercial ones at work. if you run the cutter the opposite way it will make a concave cut. they used them to make new adjusting screws and matching sockets for the connecting rod to the ram on punch presses. bitch to adjust as I recall. I've only watched about 100 of your videos, so I don't know if you ever mentioned a butress thread which these screws used because the pressure is always in the up direction.

This ball turning attachment would be more effrctive if it was mounted 90 degrees different from its current position with an angle plate. It would give you more clearence with the chuck and provide some adustment.

Hi, now then I've got a question for you sir, I'm in the process of building a similar yoke type turner as yours, out of a large lifting eye of all things , lol But on a test run I'm getting a poor cut/ chatter on the rear cut the same as yours, but I can't figure out why it would happen, I'm using a hss
@mrpete22210 жыл бұрын
Check these things. Is everything rigid? resharpen tool,try different spindle speeds, is it a hard to machine material?
@THOMASTHESAILOR10 жыл бұрын
You're gonna have a hard time eliminating chatter. A hand feed tool in any metal is tough. I had one, years ago that had a ring and pinion gear with a hand crank, that worked great. If your radius is under 1" check MSC. The should have a radius cutter, Cheap

Nice Video !! I used to use a radius cutter many times back in my younger years. Did You know, that you can retro fit that lathe to be a CNC just as easy as you can make that radius cutter. The CNC parts have gotten very affordable. All You need is an old XP computer. You can get an free old hacked copy of Mach3 software and Mastercam online. They're out dated for a modern shop, but for a home lathe it's awesome.. You'll love it.

ThomasTheSailor Chubby i dont think you should go around telling people to download pirated copys of Mach3. its only like $150. spend the money and support the developers.
@Ajicles11 жыл бұрын
Think what would of worked good is to take a piece of the plastic stock and turn a radius on one end. Drill and tap the hole. Part off say if its inch diameter to cut off about 1.25" and attach it to the mandrel and continue finish turning the radius on opposite side.
@aus713838 жыл бұрын
It seems like an offset cutter would allow for finishing the cut all the way around the back side of the ball....would probably part off roughly but at least it would be a ball, and not a knob....
