David saw a need for rapid prototyping and quick turnaround in the machining market. So he left his machining job and went full steam ahead on building his machining business, Motive Machine Works, focusing primarily on CNC rapid prototyping services. Take a look around with this machine shop tour!
Low volume and high mix , Motive Machine Works specialty is machining high complexity plastic and metal components. From Delrin to stainless steel and super alloys, Motive Machine is outfitted with 12,000 rpm spindles, chilled oil jackets, probing measurement systems, live tooling and quite the tool holder collection. Dual contact holders in addition to shrink fit collets, hydraulic and standard run of the mill holders you'd find in most shops.
Not to mention the machines are automated for lights out manufacturing, running CNC programs 5 hours into the night.
In addition to the supped up machines and entrepreneurial spirit, you'll find a handful of hacks to increasing efficiency on the machine shop floor of Motive Machine.
1. For Machine shops on the verge of outgrowing the space, the band saw, among other things, are on wheels for easy equipment access and portability.
2. The accounting and programming office is mobile; it can be picked up by two pallet jacks and literally moved anywhere.
3. Energy saving with air compressor management
4. Using water to get the correct coolant concentration.

Great to see the younger generation starting their own shop! Most existing shops in the U.S. today are owned by older folks…

Nice shop. As a fellow small shop owner, I understand wearing many hats still after 17 years. That fella who questioned your debt to earnings ratio. He has know idea that takes a few broken eggs to make an omelet. Even my wife, when I spent 80K on a VF2ss. It was paid off in 2 years, and still harps about it. That was 12 years ago, still running and producing chips every day.

Props to this young guy, so good to see people my age starting up there own companies, I hope he eats the lunch of some of these old poorly efficient out of touch companies. People like him are what north American manufacturing needs to both compete and fulfill supply needs and also get other young people excited and wanting to come to work in mfg. Only piece of advice is dont follow every other company and try and own your building some day if its ever possible. Otherwise good sh't hope you kill it and keep innovating

Awesome video! So did you get customers before or after you quit your job? How did you acquire customers?
@motivemachineworks6890
@motivemachineworks6890 Жыл бұрын
I had zero customers before I quit. I would absolutely not recommend doing that. However, I did have enough money in the bank to sustain living for 1 year if I made zero revenue. I also had a side business from the past to fall back on if it came down to that. (I ended up not needing to go that route) I had a few connections from previous jobs, but nothing major. I also did some outside of the box advertising in person in a trade show type environment. But overall making relationships with customers ends up being the best way to keep customers.

Sir, you know what happens when you assume…. 🙂 You see my dad is a financial advisor and has taught me to be smart with finances my entire life. Also what you don’t see in this video is the hard work and grit I put in before hand. I started with 2 Haas machines from the 90’s that cost total less than an average sedan bought today. After acquiring customers, determining a business model and showing customers the quality of my work, only then did I buy new machinery. FYI the lynx was purchased in cash, and the other 2 machines had a large chunk put down and currently have a combined debt totaling less than a new Ford F-150. 🙂 besides that, this entire company was funded by my pocket. I could get rid of the debt on the company currently and pay the loans off in full, but I am holding on to my cash for more machinery. 🙂 Also, I am driving a truck that is 11 years old and is all but paid off. It’s all about choices that you make!

@@motivemachineworks6890 showed me lol. My dad started our shop in 89 and we only have a 22 year old haas lathe that he bought new and a 30 year old Leblond Makino mill that he bought well used. We stay as busy as we want to. Dad has always been poor growing up so always warns about “the bottom falling out” as it often does and I’ve seen a couple times in the 17 years I’ve been working with him. Looks like you’ve got a good thing going there. I have my father to thank for our business as I had nothing to do with it in the beginning. It’s a huge leap to go out on your own like you did.

hey nothing wrong with either of our situations. Working as much as you want to isn’t a bad model if it makes sense. But Once I saw how fast the first Doosan was, I couldn’t afford not to get another. Also I was fixing the old ones every other day. I don’t have time for that anymore. I want to go in to work and know the machine is going to run. I’m always doing things in a hurry and people are relying on me shipping jobs on time in some cases. I want to deliver on time as much as possible. I do know what you mean though, it is easy to get overwhelmed with payments. I really didn’t even want to finance anything but in certain cases it is a necessary evil.

@@motivemachineworks6890 I think this would be great content for another video. Growing smartly in uncertain markets. Understanding your customers and the market factors that will impact their spending with you. Also, the difference between healthy debt versus dangerous debt.

Ah the old days of managing a 3-person shop. Unable to bill out enough shop hours to sustain growth until we reached 6-full time employees. Otherwise overhead consumes profit living month to month having way too many eggs in one basket by keeping one or two customers happy. All it takes is one of those customers to miss a NET 30 and cash flow begins to go downhill. Funny thing how all those material suppliers want paid in 30-days and don't care if you haven't been paid for 45 days.
@motivemachineworks6890
@motivemachineworks6890 11 ай бұрын
I don't have any of those problems. Most of my equipment is paid off. 4 brand new machines with the oldest being from 2019. We intend to stay small. I don't really want to deal with the logistics of 6-15 employees. We are still growing but it is gradual. Almost no debt at this point. Cashflow not an issue. As far as material and other items, 99% of what we buy is paid up front with a credit card and then auto paid by the company every month. Staying small makes the most sense to me at this point. There are times where we are slow but Most of the time the issue is that there are not enough hours to get accomplished all of the work at hand with such tight deadlines.
