Massive congratulations on your soon-to-be grandfather-hood! Don't ever feel sorry for taking time to spend with family. In fact, being a grandparent is a great excuse to spend more time with the family! And the best part is when you've had enough, you can always just give the kid back to their parents.

Congratulations on becoming a Grandfather. Watching you struggle taking off and putting back the big chucks, it looks like a good time to make yourself a mini crane for that lathe and make a small cart to house the Chuck's. It'll make your life a lot easier and those chucks seem to get heavier the older you get.

Fixing stuff for Dad is always fun and fulfilling as long as he does not supervise😁. Oh man Grandchildren!...Thats a whole different ball game. Steve I think the best part of your life is now starting. Teach them all the good stuff you can. I have 6 ranging from 2 year old little cutie terrorist. Heh Heh! to 19 a year old kickass ice hockey goalie! You will be able to fix things for them too. My two oldest are girls, guess who gets to fix their cars... Dang Kids! would not trade them for the world. Congratulations to you, Elizabeth and family. Cheers

Nothing gets back to "normal" after your first grandchild! Nor would you want it to. We have a nice, rural place in southern Indiana, but our first grandchild lives in the Chicago suburbs. And he's about to be a big brother! I'm barely gettin' my grass mowed in Indiana; and I'm happier than pig in sh**! Congrats!

Grandpa, WOOHOO! ! ! Me thinks you can add one more tiny job to the never ending list and that would be a 5 hundred pound swinging jib crane over the lathe. When I finally put one over mine my back is still thanking me. Fun one doing all kinds of things getting taken off the never ending list. Nice to see the shop has become everything you wanted in a shop come to fruit. Pretty sweet fruit in my eyes bud.

Steve, if you applied AC via a rheostat to your magnetic chuck and gradually reduced the voltage (you made need to do it more than once), it should remove any residual magnetism.

What you did with your workpiece in chuck is exactly what I do with collets tool grinding. It absolutely works. You don't have to tap on a tool shank as much to get it to run true. I hate indicating. I made ( 4 ) washers like what you made to tram in my bench mill head . They were .250" thick to start. On X axis I ground enough off to bring in the X axis. The Y axis is a little harder . You have to grind the other direction with the washers separately. It worked well but the washers have to go back to their original locations if it is ever taken apart. Some people may have tramed their heads in differently but this worked very well.

Like help you get firewood cut, split, and covered. Sanding, sweeping, and lifting. They say if you have two competent people doing a task instead of one you get a 250% increase in productivity.

WOW- leaning into that chuck and blowing off the chips with that big beard dangling is a scary looking operation. For changing the chuck, just add a board with a hinge and a couple wood v- blocks to support the chuck- it will work for both your chucks.

Hello Steve and family, if you live close to a rolling mill of any kind really, try to get ahold of the roll shop supervisor. Most roll shops will have a hand held industrial deguassing unit that will kill the residual magnetism in your magnetic chuck. I’d get one sent to you but they run $2000.

Morning Steve, to fix your mag chuck issue id recommend a OS walker mag chuck controller. We ran them on all our smaller manual grinders at work and they seem to be very reliable. It demags the chuck and the part when you turn it off plus it gives you the option to very the mag strength or go full stick. There not cheap but a nice small self contained unit

Hi Steve, no matter what, family comes first. KZbin can wait because we’ll be here when you get back. I think I have it better than you guys in the states because some of my favourite channels, like yours, upload on Saturday morning but it’s Saturday night here in Australia so for me I can come in from my workshop, have my dinner and put my feet up and spend the evening watching YT. 😂 Just a suggestion, I have a similar power hacksaw to yours and it’s on four wheels which makes pulling it in and out just that much easier. Also I have an electromagnetic sheet metal bender which uses a very powerful electromagnet (4 tons) to hold the sheet metal in place while bending. When it releases the magnet it sends a reverse electrical pulse back through the magnet to get rid of the residual magnetism which something you could do with your magnetic chuck. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

Hi Steve, Maybe a solution for the mag chuck is to feed it with AC voltage for a short burst. I would this the chuck is feed with DC when operating. Congrats on the new addition to the family.

Nice, I have that same micrometer. The drum switch for the mag chuck should be set up to apply DC to hold and in the other position apply AC to demag the chuck... Only use the demag position momentarily, the switch "should" be set up for momentary on the AC side and locked in on the DC side... I'm betting that you will figure this out LOL

I had a lathe with a non standard sized L type taper (it was French, metric threaded) backplates did not exist for it, I sold it on and bought a lathe with a D1-6 spindle. I think a hoist arrangement for lifting those chucks is needed, not worth the risk of a back injury.
