Up until the early 90's there was a Gannet used as a Gate Guardian at RAF Lossiemouth (formally RNAS Fulmar). Sat alongside this hefty beast was a Buccaneer and a Shackleton . Quite a sight! Great video as always!

Oh how I would’ve loved to have seen that! I’m sure it was a rather intimidating Gate Guardian with its “chunkiness”, thanks for the comment😁🤙🏻

What an amazing model of Fairey Gannet. Brings back memories of my dad who work in the Fairey factory where the large amount of parts Gannet where made. It was shared between 3 othe factories . I had the pleasure of visiting the factory when I was 11 I'm (68) I think the last one was completed in 1967 Stay safe J.

I enjoyed your build and you have sold me on the idea of building one. These things take me back to family holidays in Devon and Cornwall when I was young. If we were lucky our holidays coincided with an Open Day at RNAS Culdrose, RAF Chivenor or St Mawgan. Fairey Gannets were regular visitors to these events. I enjoyed seeing them fly. I always thought of them as being safe, solid and dependable aircraft. Yes, they do look a bit chunky but some of us do prefer a bit of wood on the tree and something quieter. Three bits of trivia: 1. Sorry to be a spotter but the Fairey Gannet had two engines, each driving its own co-axially mounted propeller. So not really a contra-rotating propellor. 2. They were not invasion stripes but recognition stripes applied to aircraft operating in the 1956 Suez crisis. 3. The RN were hell bent on getting rid of nasty, dangerous, explosive aviation spirit (petrol) from their carriers. So jet engines and gas turbines using relatively safe kerosene were the future but…. these things were started with a gas generator burning, of all things, Avpin. This is a highly volatile liquid mono-fuel or in other words an explosive. Therefore armourers had to look after its storage and dispensing.

That is a really nice model, thank you for sharing it with us. I'm glad you built it "out of the box" because it lets us numpties know what can be done if we (mainly me) makes it properly. I haven't made an Airfix kit for over 50 years, they seem to have progressed somewhat, building jigs? Well, well, well.

G'day Luke, I'm down here in Tasmania and, finally, I found the new Gannet kit at a price I could afford. I'm so glad I persisted till I found one. While I've been waiting; I've watched this great video on your build. I'm ex-RAAF but, like you seem to be; I'm fascinated by WW2 and post war military aircraft. I've done a lot of research on the Gannets flown by our Navy back when we had a carrier in the 60s. For this reason, I'll be subscribing. They are so beautifully ugly; talk about function over form; the Gannet is all function! 😉 I haven't done a really new Airfix kit in a long time. I cooled on them when they were making really flimsy plastic moulds out of India. Now, they have gone back to making their kits easy on modellers. With such a complex structure, like the Gannet, those placement 'guides' ensure the base angles are correct because if they weren't the rest of the fuselage would be a nightmare to square up. The RAN livery will be different to yours, however, you've done a fantastic job with the light weathering that seems to be a hallmark of this aircraft. Most carrier-based aircraft, including the Gannet, were regularly washed down to lessen the effects of saltwater so they always looked sharp. Your addition of 'sand dust' was a clever move given your Gannet's posting. These are in my Top 20 'light' fighter/bombers. For their time they were a devastating, versatile weapons platform. So, thanks again, Luke. This video will be a great help to me when my Gannet 'touches down'. Cheers, Bill H.

Some of the bulkier aircraft really do look better in a bigger scale. The recent buccaneer is a similar example . The first time I saw a gannet live, I could not believe how deep the fuselage was. This scale really does it justice. You have to love ship borne craft for their sheer toughness!

Great build, and newly subbed! Re the nose weight box, there is a part, A5, not mentioned in the instructions. Excellent build of a very interesting model. With Airfix having 20% off this weekend I was going to treat myself to a 1/48 Anson or Blenheim but I'm thinking I might just go for the Gannett instead. I have an unbuilt Tamiya Swordfish in my stash and I think they'd go well together. Also, what is the closing music please? Hi Mach Models I am thinking about getting this kit I was wondering when doing this model did you have any fitting problems and such as what white do you use since I am having trouble on trying to find a good white to aurbrush and brush paint
@machmodels
@machmodels Жыл бұрын
Hi dude! I would say that this kit is for a modeller who has made quite a few kits, that’s purely because it has a hell of a lot of parts which all need to be put into place perfectly to ensure a good fit. If you can get all the parts in correctly the kit will go together with no issues at all, the one area I had a little bit of problem would be nose area but that was sorted out just using some white putty! In regard to a white, I love to use the SMS white. Super good coverage and lovely finish. I hope that helps!

About 1992 I was with REME and attached to an British Army unit who were covering a rather special air base and beside where I was working was a Fairy Gannet parked up on the grass. Talking to the Squadron Leader who was my boss he told me he actually flew it on it's last flight to this base before it was grounded and a lot of parts removed. Interesting to hear some of the aircraft The Gannet is certainly very distinctive and easily recognisable with it's two propellers.. I agree she is a very chunky bird but there is an elegance in her ugliness.

@@machmodels well done, did you think the internal assembly presented a few fit issues?
@machmodels
@machmodels Жыл бұрын
I don’t think so, for me I did have a seam on the top of the fuselage but as I said I think that was more down to me not cleaning off the paint from the wing spars. If there is a fit issue it’s nothing that can’t be sorted out with ease😁🤙🏻
