I'm not Irish but just a poor mutt. But Anthony is a Wexfordian and does this piece and his country so well. As a child and still now as an adult I belong to an Irish Catholic parish called St Malachy. NI saint I fear, before there was a NI. And we learned Irish songs in school. Just not this one. Wish I had.

Thank you Phyllis. I was told I am French/German. It really doesn't matter. But I also am a Catholic, yet maybe can't call myself as devout as other Catholics. I love my faith and what it teaches me, and the centuries it has taught me. I've never had to fight for the right to practice my citizenship or faith. Don't know if I have that stuff. But yes, I do love this music.

Tell him his voice is comforting me through trying times and is making me feel a lot better. I've been in love with a beautiful Irish boy (Irish American) and I am terrified he doesn't love me back. I told him on May 22 through email how I felt, but it's June 3rd and I still haven't checked back to see if and what he replied, because I'm too scared. The boy I love has pretty, thick brown hair, beautiful big blue eyes, tall, goofy, and elegant all at the same time, a big friendly smile, a gorgeous singing voice, and most of all, laughter in his heart, a twinkle in his eye, a good soul, and has a lot of love and emotion, especially for his mother. An Irish man if I've ever seen one, regardless of where he was born! I've always been deeply into Irish everything (I have some Irish myself) but falling in love with this boy- man- has made me fall in love with it even more, because I can see where he gets his beautiful loving soul from! I also lost my mom a couple years ago and listening to Anthony and the Tenors on VHS always comforted me, as she and her (late) mother were Irish American. It would mean a lot to me if you would both say a prayer for me that my friend would love me back, and to thank Anthony for the music that soothes my soul!

Both England and Irish Patriots are in the same place against those who are determined to destroy their religion, freedom, and history. This is a fight song, very relevant to what is happening and has been been going on for the last 5 years. Their culture and history is at stake and is worth fighting for. As an American it is also part of my history as well. We will not be replaced or surplanted by an incoming foe looking to only destroy and make void everything that we hold dear. We must all stand & fight together for one another!. WWG1WGA!

I always smile now when I hear this song. There's a new cute little Prince George in England. The advice here is for his Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great GrandFather. There's even been 3 Georges since the gentleman who's hirelings committed the atrocity at Vinegar hill. An atrocity so bad the English commander in Ireland at the time resigned in disgust of his own men. So yes, the history is VERY LONG and sore, 800 years will take a while to get over. Ireland and England are in a better place today and we celebrate; But just to show how "new" that is just this year 2014 the FIRST state visit by an Irish head of state EVER (in recorded history) to England. In part Ireland's only had a recognized head of separate "head of state" since 1949!! (yup only 730 odd years to go). So when folks want the Irish to "get over it", remember we have very little "other history" to replace it with. Having our asses kicked IS what we are used to

Ireland, next to Haiti, has had one of the toughest fights for freedom as a nation that has included even her own lands rebelling as in the Great Potato Famine. What terrible times, and the Troubles is so devastating. And then the 60's and 70's with Northern Ireland. May she always live in peace and prosperity. And I do love Haiti. Been to both Haiti (7 times) and Ireland, sadly only once, and would go back in a blink, but the poor old feet and legs just aren't what they used to be. And Anthony Kearns, he's great, just great. Let us never forget our history.

I do like Kearns version better because of it's underlying tension in the beat of the drums and the way he sings proud. Contrasting it with Bowyers rendition, although good, it is in more of a waltz tempo which for me takes away from the tension and dispair of the encounter. Both are good though.

@Lisnageeragh I know exactly what you mean and would agree with you as a rule. However in Kearns' particular case this doesn't apply, IMO. Those emphases etc that you mention are extroverted and take the singer out to the audience. By eschewing them Kearns brings the audience in to him. Listen to his version of Grace, as a prime example, and you'll see what I mean. Not everyone can do this. It requires a particularly fine vocal instrument and intense concentration.

A difficult question to answer or even try to answer without annoying someone. My simple attempt to answer the question is this: You can fight for freedom but fight your enemy only, do not injure or kill your own people in doing so. If you are indiscriminate in your fight (for example plant bombs in public places) then you are a terrorist; you have frightened people, maybe killed people.
