Last week we introduced a little mid-week video series, chronicling our epic trip to Scotland earlier this year - and here we present Chapter Two! On this trip, we again set off from Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, and meander through MacKenzie Lands to the north and west, all the way out to the North Atlantic. We'll visit places where the clan lived and worked and fought; battlefields, fishing villages, and pristine white sand beaches. And then, we'll turn around and go all the way back, to the eastern edge of Scotland, and the strategic Fort George.
We hope you history buffs had a chance to catch Chapter One last week - and if you missed it, please do watch it first, then come back:

My surname is Mackenzie. I live in Scotland. My father's name is Roderick which was a name popular among the mackenzie clan. In fact it was a man named Sir roderick mackenzie who worked on the leod Castle. Thank for your videos LUCEO NON URO from Scotland ❤️❤️❤️

What a cool fort! Nasty traps and that Grand Magazine! Wow! It's very interesting to us that these installations are still operational yet allow tourists to come in; don't see much of that here in the U.S. for sure! And what a personal and emotional experience to see the serene battlefields flanked by stunning landscape - hard to imagine ugliness and bloodshed all these years later. Thank you for sharing! - Rick & Nova

One thing we did note, in our travels all through Scotland, was how much reverence is placed on military service. There are memorials everywhere, and of course that fabulous working fort with the museum - it just illustrates how important the British Army has been to world history.

Carol Rogers Yes I will tell you the truth: if you visit Scotland once, you will return. It’s magical. My husband, who hates being trapped in a plane for untold hours, wanted to plan a return trip almost as soon as we got home last year. And so, we are going back for 2 weeks this September! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Oh what great family history. I did genealogy on my moms side of the family for a while. When my aunt retired I handed it over to her. Very hard doing Danish heritage. McCoy is my married name. My son’s father is of Scottish heritage but I don’t know much. I’m so glad Dale got to see areas, it seems to make it more real than reading about it. Loved these videos. ❤️❤️

Actually the MacKenzies weren't just warriors. Alexander MacKenzie was the first European to cross North America (12 years before Lewis and Clark) and has the 13th longest river in the world named after him. His cousin Roderick established the first European settlement in Alberta, Canada. His cousin Donald was also a fur trader, and has a river in southern Oregon named after him. He went on to be chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in charge of a huge territory. His cousin Henry managed the first industrial complex in Quebec, a collection of mills that all ran on water power. The estate he managed is now a suburb of Montreal, called Terrebonne, with a population of around 100,000. The latter 3 were brothers. They grew up on a farm called Auch na Cleric, which you doubtless passed on the trip described here. It is not far from Garve. Their father was the local tacksman, as they descended from the clan family that held Eileen Donan. The third one is my 3 g grandfather.

Wow, this is some amazing history, and you ought to be rightfully proud of being descended from these accomplished Scots! We are very aware of Alexander MacKenzie, and in fact we have the book written about him, "First Across the Continent". We know there have been many many MacKenzies who made their mark on Canada - including Dale's family back to right after Culloden. So happy to have heard from another one - thank you for writing, and for watching this video. :)

I have so many questions, it's been my life dream to do a visit as you have done. I've always been known in my family as being a McKenzie/MacKenzie through and thru. Father is Mc and my mother is Mac. Had my DNA testing and I'm from the Scottland area, 98% Scottish ironically. Would love to communicate if you're interested. We are 3 generations in Canada, however many of the McKenzie's came from the Boston area? I'm not sure how to share any contact information without it being public, perhaps if your interested you could let me know how? Thank you for the beautiful tour and information....

Although my father’s family originally arrived here in 1755, it was fun to explore Hamilton history in East Lothian, Scotland a few summers ago. Nice people, extremely green everywhere you looked, and bugs. Midges, I think the locals called them. God, I would have emigrated too...just to get away from the midges. Anyway, fun to watch you explore your ancestry!

dont know if you have any interest in golf, we scots obviously invented it lol, but the greatest course in the world is in the usa, augusta national, designed by ALISTER MCKENZIE, just thought you would like to know a wee golf fact, us scots have had so much contribution to the development of the usa.
@paulamckenzie
@paulamckenzie 2 жыл бұрын
Ohhh we absolutely know how much Scots have contributed to the United States - from way back in the 18th century when the country itself was being formed, and ever since. That's why we have the Tartan Day Parade in NYC every April - to honor all the contributions of the Scots who emigrated or were driven out of their homeland. Dale has played some golf, but I never have - did not know that fact about Augusta National, but of course have seen it on TV. We would absolutely love to visit St Andrews sometime - I mean, that is the holy grail of golf, right?!
