They're also human beings. I was in London with my goddaughter, we were trying to find a pub somewhere around the Palace to meet up with mates and were incredibly lost. The Queen's Guards don't just man the front gates, they're all around the property. My goddaughter was close to tears, we couldn't find anyone else to ask, not another soul around, so I went up to the guard and said, "I know you're not supposed to move or anything, but we're looking for XYZ street and completely turned around. Could you like maybe just flick your eyes in the right direction? Please?" He stood completely rigid for a few seconds, then smiled, and - like any normal human being - said "go down that way for two streets, turn left, and it'll be just past ABC shop on the right." Went back to being a statue while my goddaughter gawped in astonishment. "Thank you so much, thank you!" And off we went. My goddaughter couldn't stop telling that story for weeks.

The only indication I've seen that they're human beings was that time the Royal family was doing some big event on live TV in the summer, and one of the guards overheated and fainted (dropping his Bayonet rifle and losing his fuzzy helmet-hat.) For all I knew, they were robots; I half-expected them to have windup keys hidden under their hats, like the tin soldiers you'd see in old tv shows.

A lot of this is fairly misleading or just perpetuating myths, military prison is a potential punishment for any soldier in the Army, but it's reserved for only the worst offences. Making a guard laugh would at most be a fine from their pay, although from what I've heard, these days that's probably unlikely too, probably depends more on who notices if they do.

I once saw a video of some American tourist who tried to touch a Royal Guard's hat. It didn't end well. In one movement, the guard moved his foot behind the offender's, gave him a shove, and as the guy hit the ground, he wound up with a rifle in his face and the bayonet about an inch away from his nose with the guard booming "STAND DOWN!" Talk about scary-good. Those guys are weapons.

I was a firefighter/EMT..I Once stood guard at the funeral of our longtime chief. Granted it was only a few hours for 2 services, but it was not easy. At the end of the night, I overheard a child about the age of 7 or 8 asking his mom why I was standing so still, and why I wouldn’t smile back at him…I tried really hard to not break, but after about 10 minutes of the child’s innocent questions and faces he made trying to get me to smile,I smiled back. I didn’t get scolded or shot…it was actually quite a memorable experience. 😊

@@levi7492 The soldiers that make up the Guard do so voluntarily. They enroll into one of the five Foot Guard regiments. If they pass their infantry training then they do both tasks. They are fully operational units deployed as the rest of the British army with the added task of performing guard duty.

(Specific sentry drills, either alone or in unison with their partner) The only real time they are not allowed to move is when they are on parade like the trooping of the colours. Yes it gets hot with the bearskin and tunic but there are tricks to staying up, there are even cases if caught in time where they will sandwich the guard who is not doing well and keep him up. There are tons of little tricks that they learn to stay awake and keep the mind focused as to avoid falling. But sometimes there is nothing one can do. And if you do fall the unwritten rule is you better hit the floor before your rifle does and move a muscle until you are carried off the parade square.

Say its mid summer, 30 degrees C with no wind and a few scum bags come and ram the gate in a sort of fashion to over throw the hierarchy and send a msg to the world. After ramming the gate their vehicle stops working so these guys get out and charge for the front doors "where is the front 2 guards and the door guard" you may ask, ah well one tried to shoot the vehicle and landed a few shots however missed his target because he was wearing an animal over his eyes, and the second one passed out while making a dash towards the truck. Which resulted in one of the 2 dieing, (one went unchecked with heat stroke for several hours and the other hit by the truck he barely saw) The front door guards attempted to put up a fight againsed the (lets say 4 men in a bullet proof vest and a t shirt and cargo pants) these 4 men easily take down these trained killers by simply knocking them down with a gun, these guards r tired from just working 1 hour 50 minutes in the scorching sun and are exausted, one attempts to raise his gun to shoot but because of his thick and heavy clothes he didnt raise his arm in time and died. These men make it inside where they are gunned down because im sure interior floor security is wearing normal bullet proof vests and sports suits (normal looking suits for a professional look but are actually rather stretchy and allow for gymnastics).... I fabricated the last part, but im just saying you may not make it to actually kill the queen no matter how hard one may try, but the presidents white house is much more secure and has stronger personel at hand because they arent arrogant enough to force their fighters into the damn flag just rep their country (or patriotic enough? idk i dont think im using the right term but you know what i mean)

I once knew a former Royal guard. And not only are they not to be tested while they are servicing on duty, they aren't to be mess with even after they retired and have become civilians. Lets just say that I mildly brush the ex SF soldier the wrong way and he over reacted and our short lived friendship was instantly over. in 2021......Canadian troops have once again been named to perform as the Queen’s Guard in London. Some 80 members of the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) are heading to the UK along with 35 members of the Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA) band. The Canadian soldiers will take up their guard duty positions on October 21 and continue until November 12. The Queen’s Guard are soldiers charged, in support of the civil authorities, with guarding the Sovereign and the official royal residences in the UK. These include Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace, Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. This is especially significant as they will be acting as sentries during this 100th anniversary year of the end of the First World War.

I'm a US Navy veteran and have empathy for the Royal Guard. I ve had to stand motionless in certain ceremonies. It's not fun. While we wouldn't likely go to prison for slightly moving, we were expected to be as still as possible. Why do people think that screwing with a guard of any military organization is a good idea? That is highly disrespectful and a bit loony. I've been an armed guard at a post. Luckily for me I was free to move about. I would snap to attention when I checked ID'S at the gate and render the proper salute when required. I'm lucky that the general public had enough since to mess with me. I had a loaded pistol and a ratio for backup.

Same here. Honestly never gave these men the respect they deserved until I found out how hard it is just maintaining military bearing. If you had watch Partners you could maybe switch off and on and sleep or go use the head but I was never in the public eye like this, this would be hell to stand this post. Much respect.

Reason for the disrespect is easy - For most people today, playing war video games is the closest they ever get to the military. The Military and war are just games to them. US Army here.

Messing with anyone who is doing there job is rude, and asking for trouble. I think the judicial punishment should always be having to do the other person's job for a day, and do it well, or do it all over again, whatever the job may be.

i pulled duty at a few fire fighters funerals and we stood perfectly still could not move or show any emotion a little bit and i do mean little bit of what these guards go through, its military training that prepares you

69 people passed out at a change of command ceremony in Sanantonio, Texas..I got back in the flight..Three months later after never feeling right..I was a type 1 diabetic..That shock was enough to trigger it.Never had Blood sugar issues before that.

My husband was in the Guards many years ago and recounted the story of the tourist standing next to one of those guarding the Palace. He didn`t move as the guard went to move off and had a large boot smash down on his sandalled foot!!

The Guards and Household Cavalry are no "toy soldiers". They are members of regular regiments doing a "ceremonial turn". My father was in the cavalry, the fellas on horseback with armour and swords, but when not doing a turn at royal residences he was sat in a tank wearing khaki.

These soldiers performing the royal guard, over the past few years also served multiple tours of Afghanistan, Iraq, Northern Ireland amongst others. They've lost friends and fought to serve their country, So your average man on the street isn't conscripted. This is just part of their duties. Show some respect

I spent two years in Aden in the early sixties and we had the Coldstream Guards and other Guards units serving with us. It was a bit hairy at the time and we used to escort them on their patrols in Habilayn Dhala and the Radfan. I was in the Royal Corps of Transport and were concerned with troop movements and forward supplies of food and ammunition etc.

My grandfather and father were Coldstream Guards at Buckingham Palace which is a part of the British Army. My dad did not talk a lot about his time in the guards but I do remember him saying that they had to polish the soles of their boots. The height requirement was 6’2” or taller so I was surprised to learn the height requirement has been reduced. This was an interesting article but I am not sure all of the info is correct.

My father was also a Coldstream Guard and was on duty at Buckingham Palace when Elizabeth and Margaret were girls. He was also on guard at The Tower of London and The Bank of England. He served in Palestine and on his way home had to fight in North Africa, including Tobruk and El Alamein. He used to drive a Bren Gun Carrier and drove senior officers in a staff car. He was shot twice. Shaved with petrol to save water and made tea with the water from radiators of damaged vehicles. He told me that wooden and cardboard replicas of tanks and vehicles were placed so that the enemy could see how well equipped the British were. But this ploy was seen through by them as they actually flew over and dropped wooden bombs on them. I wish I could remember everything he told me about it all, I know there was a lot he never let on. I am so proud of him and miss him every day. I have his medals, and a booklet he carried, in his breast pocket, along with other papers and his Guardsman's tie (Which due to never having been a Guard myself, I am forbidden to wear on any occasion.) Rest in Peace Dad. 11.7.19 - 26.8.95.

@@tonycritcher3419 I read with great interest your post. My father was also a Coldstream Guard when the princesses were little girls. He was born in 1918 so they were very close age wise, in their experiences. My father went on to be a commando in the Royal Navy during WWII. In 1954 he moved our family to Canada but the guards were always a very important part of his life. Unfortunately he passed away from multiple myeloma at the age of 45. I believe he was exposed to radiation during a WWII raid in Norway leading to an early death.

@@quesnelgirl My goodness, our fathers may well have known each other and been on duty together. So sorry to see that your father died so young after being exposed to the radiation in his line of duty. War and conflicts are awful things. And so much is lost and often so little is gained. My father always felt guilty about being able to come home having lost so many mates at such young ages too. As for polishing boots, they used to use a hot spoon to smooth the leather to get a better shine. His father was also in the services and told dad that he had to polish the instep underneath his shoes, which I still do, on the occasions where I wear black shoes. As Grandad used to say, 'you never know who is walking behind you and can see the bottom of your shoes!' Thank you for replying, yours was the first post I read and replied to today.

My father once told the secret to not fainting on parade. He was a retired RNZAF officer who rose through the ranks. The secret is as simple as moving your toes in your boots. Something to do with blood circulation.

For some strange reason you have included clips of the Danish Guard. You also need to do some better research on the Guards. The Royal Guard, that is the guard mounted on the monarch’s location, is drawn from the current Guard Regiment based in London. The Guard can also be mounted by Royal Engineers, Ghurkas, Royal Artillerymen, and even Commonwealth troops.

The fainting is typically from locking your knees, and slowing bloodflow. In the marines, during uniform inspections, we would stand at attention for hours, and it wasnt uncommon for at least one person to faint

In 1973 I spent a couple of months in England. I walked everywhere. One day I was walking by St. James palace down a deserted street. Across the way was a royal guard standing his post besides his little shelter. At first I did not notice him but when I did i realized he was watching me walk by. Of course when I saw him doing it, he snapped back to attention. I knew he was not supposed to move and that I had caught him, so I smiled mischievously and walked on. But inside I was very flattered. Maybe I should have slipped him my phone number. It was so cute! It only counts if you don’t try. ;)
