Beautiful times we had, i was born in 68 and when we look back it was magic, no one had nothing but everyone looked after each other, the lovely times with Christmas, bonfire night, new year first footing taking the coal in at 12 to see the new year in, every house had a party well into the mornings, you could go in any ones house with a warm welcome, proper Xmas trees up. I could cry how our country has ended up in 2024

This is looking back at what was 'my England'. I was 20 yrs old and nearly married. We had little money but saved hard and lived with my darling Gran until our new little semi was built. Mortgage interest was high then, so my husband worked a lot of overtime. To see this country now breaks my heart. But I do have happy memories of a country I was so grateful to have been born into, felt at home in and felt safe in. Wish I could go back to those times.

The widespread smoking partly explains the lack obesity. The other things are no junk foods and take aways/kebab shops, people didn’t rely on cars especially for short journeys, they walked and finally a lot of people did hard manual jobs and didn’t have labour saving devices at home so they were burning a lot calories off daily. xx

It was a grim, dirty city with poverty, smog and ignorance. The food was awful British fare, and foreign tourists didn't come because it was dirty, intimidating, unattractive and unwelcoming. The reputation of British food was a particular turn-off.
