I am from MI...I live on Lake Superior. I bought this jacket two years ago... Grey and black checkered... I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS JACKET!!! I was in a car accident.. two weeks ago and ended up side down in a swamp... I got myself out of my vehicle... by shouldering out of the windshield... The jacket was not damaged at all. I was sopping wet in the middle of a snow storm and was able to still stay warm enough for 30 minutes until help could arrive!!! This jacket will not let you down!!!

Jason Wieczorek Grey and Black ain't Michigan Camo lol. Glad you're alright, i was in a nasty pile up on US 31 south of Ludington, MI in 2013 in January in a blizzard on the lake. Not the UP but still and sadly i wish i had a good jacket at the time. I was working but would have been warmer in a Mackinac Crusier but was in a company jacket. For cold cold, i wear Baltic Shawl sweater in a jacket and that is "hot" down to -10°F.

Great story, and proof that dressing in sensible clothing can save your life when your day's plans go wrong, Air Con in cars can lul you into a false sense of security and some people can be tempted to just wear impractical clothing with no warmth, but then break down and really feel the cold.

Found one of these today! Absolutely gorgeous. You won't believe this but it looked brand new. The store is called "The Shed". It consists of many different booths owned by vendors of collectibles, from comic books, knives, furniture, clothes and on and on.... This Mackinaw Cruiser was hanging in one of those booths. I've had my eye on it for a while. It was priced at $285.00 for awhile. Went in today.... Here's the clincher. $50.00!! I'm telling ya, I was blown away. Best purchase I've made in quite awhile. Forest green color. Brand new in looks and feel. 👍

+Wranglerstar and +Nathan Oberlander. My grandfather was very poor. He grew collards during the winter months and that is all the food he had except for wild game. A man stopped by one day and gave him collards. When the man left I asked my grandfather "why he was so happy." He stated "that if someone thought enough of you to give you a gift that a person should be appreciative." +Nathan Oberlander - a little appreciation and gratitude goes along way. +Wranglerstar - thanks for the video, a great gift to be enjoyed.

I grew up in the Machinaw area and now live in Alaska. All the old timers in AK wear wool and so do I. Love wool and Filson. Ibex is another great American company that is making wool clothing. Ibex wants all there wool to come from American farmers currently some of there wool is coming from overseas. The more people support the company the soon they can buy there wool from American farmers. Love the vids!

The process of shrinking the wool is called felting. It makes it a really tight weave that keeps a lot of the wind out which helps keep you warm. Wondered what part of the country you were in until you mentioned it in this video. Thanks for the videos.

Interesting thing I recently learned. I moved to Toronto a year ago, last winter I noticed a lot of homeless people here in Toronto were wearing Canada goose and Filson jackets and shirts. I couldn't understand it but just last week I seen the homeless starting to wear them again now that the temperature is dropping. I made a statement about it to a co-worker and he said that here in Toronto, Filson and Canada goose give the homeless free clothing. I wear a Canada goose jacket myself and it is incredibly warm and now I plan on buying a few items from Filson just because they clearly are a company that does care about the suffering of those most in need in such harsh winter climates and its a testament to how good the clothing actually is. If you live on a budget like I do then save its worth it.

Mackinac (French spelling) or Mackinaw (British spelling of French pronunciation) is the area I live in...the Land of the Great Turtle. Fort Michilimackinac was a French fur traders post from 1715-1763 when the British took it over and later moved to Mackinac Island. A land of rich history, a huge part of early America....most people don't really know about. The Astor family (yeah, them) made their fortune in furs on Mackinac Island.

I have four original Hudson Bay wool blankets that belonged to my grandmother. I suspect they are of the same weight wool as the coat, perhaps even heavier. There is a real tradition in this wool up north, similar to the tradition of quilts in the somewhat more mild south. Thank you for this video. I work at a very reputable sports store and I rarely approve of synthetic materials, I'm much more into the types of jackets you have shown. That being said one jacket has changed my mind in this case, Columbia's Titanium line is exceptionally good and I have their winter jacket, made for people who will be moving a lot, it has a hard shell (extremely tear resistant) that's more water resistant than high quality tents and has a removable liner inside that's 100% polyester but is extremely dense, the interior liner alone weighs around 3 pounds. Without the liner, it is hands down the best rain jacket I've ever had and with the liner I have faced temperatures that made me think twice before venturing outside and stayed warm (around -45c). If even one person buys a Columbia Titanium product because of my paragraph I'll be happy knowing that there is one person who will never look for another synthetic jacket again.

I think SwanDri wool is very good. Very tight weave and virtually water proof. I currently own a Egmont bush shirt . The Egmont bush shirt is the pre-cursor to SwanDri wool. The Egmont is a pull over type of piece of clothing but it is superbly made and like I said virtually water and wind proof. Put a lite weight fleece jacket under it and your good to go in virtually any type of weather. I've used my snow blower a ton this winter and wore this combo when the wind chill was well below 0 and had no problem with staying warm and dry even in heavy snow conditions.

From what I understand the fort where the coats were commissioned originally by John Askin, in Fort St. Joesph, which is located in Ontario, adjacent to Michigan, so the origin is actually Canadian. But was as you say made famous by the loggers in the states. Then name comes from Michilimackinac (which is mostly located in Michigan now) I suppose? What a rich history for such a simple coat!

Those are pretty timeless coats. I've had them and they're good. They have some downsides though from the old styling. No zipper, no storm flap. And no cuffs in the sleeves. believe it or not it has an effect when you're trying to keep wind out. Some Mackinaws lack a decent collar to cut wind and usually have pretty lame pockets for the hands when they're needing it. Not trying to knock the coats, They're pretty sharp for a work coat. If you were going to hunt I'd go more for a Woolrich Hunting coat or a new Johnson hunting coat with zipper, better pockets for the hands and fold away hood.

Great video. Filson makes great "American made" products. Worth the money.

Thanks for finally mentioning the vest! (Well, if you hadn't before.) I usually click thumbs up not too far into a video. I guess I'm too much of a KZbinr, hehe. The link to part 2 is very appreciated. I thought you were done, haha.

I've bought some Filson stuff after watching some of your videos. They have some of the best customer service.

I’ve been wearing a similar coat by legendary whitetail not as much of a rich history but much cheaper and still made with some quality I’ve had this coat for years never lets me down

Fun video; I have my pops...and the pants to match but they are way to heavy for my skinny frame. Wear and love the coat up here in nw Montana and keeps me cozy at all times.

I think mike deserves a new handle in one of his tool for such a nice gift. Great job on the review. As always.

Nice. I just started getting some Filson stuff this year. Pricey but beautiful and built to last.
