Shame that Macklemore hit it big on Thrift Shop rather than the songs that he was the most passionate about. Don't get me wrong, I love Macklemore, I just wish he got recognition for the songs he cared about like this one.

Shag Swag To be honest I don't really care if he writes them or not. What matters is he's making songs where he expresses himself, songs that matter more to him. I like but can't appreciate his songs like Thrift Shop but I love his songs like Otherside, Hold Your Head Up, Jimmy Iovine, Neon Cathedral...the songs which actually have a message that means something to him, not just something that sounds nice and you can party to.

My name is actually Griffey. I was named after, of course, the baseball player. When my mom was pregnant with me, my dad bet that if Junior got a homerun, they'd name me Griffey, since he was my dads favorite player. My mom accepted, and hey what do ya know he got a home run. I'm only 15 now, and my mom sadly passed away a few years ago in '10 so this song which is sort of a goodbye for Niehaus, I like to consider a goodbye to my mom

That call by Dave still brings a tear to my eye. I was at games 3 and 4, both friggin incredible games, but my favorite memory was flying down my stairs and bolting through my front door flailing and screaming when Edgar hit that double and suddenly having a moment when I could hear people in the distance all around me doing the same thing. I'll never forget that! Amazing how a fleeting moment of pure joy can bring up such emotions after all these years. I only wish Dave could be here for this moment as well. Dave Niehaus was an amazing sportscaster. As a child I would listen to him announce the Mariner games on TV till I had to go to bed. In the summers it would still be light out around 9 PM but I would stay up listening to Dave on my radio while fighting the urge to fall asleep. I grew up with the Mariners my whole life and Griffey was my idol. I even mimicked him, played centerfield, wore number 24, taught myself to bat left-handed (I am a natural righty), and tried perfecting his batting stance and amazing swing. This video gives me goosebumps. Thinking of the '95 season STILL gives me goosebumps. It was an epic year for Seattle and something I will remember and be proud of my entire life. This Macklemore video is pretty awesome and brings back some of the very best memories of my childhood. Thank you for that. REFUSE TO LOSE!

I grew up a hardcore A’s fan, and, though written in the voice of a Mariner’s fan, I’ve always found this song to be touching because it conjures up my own nostalgia, and brings back memories of watching countless A’s games with my family and friends over the years - memories I will cherish forever. On this day I find this song more touching than ever before, as Ray Fosse, the former A’s commentator and an icon of my childhood, passed away today. I experienced so much joy watching the A’s over the years, and Ray was a primary conduit of that joy. I will miss hearing his voice, his stories, his knowledge, and his never ending love for the Green and Gold. God bless baseball so cool to see a hip hop song about it. It really is the best sport of all. There is no time limit. It challenges what a human can possibly do with a stick and his body, against what another human can possibly do tossing a ball. It was designed to break your heart, and yet time and time again their are insane victories by the underdog. There is no sport in the world like baseball, and it's so emotional. So in-precise. They measure everything in baseball by numbers and complicated math these days and still the unpredictable and impossible happens. A game of heroes, a game of villains. A game of redemption and regret. The national "pastime" and yet a game where time seems to stop during those wonderful moments you will remember forever. It's a game of contradictions and timeless truths. It's a beautiful game. Long live hip hop, and long live baseball.

I’m 39 and grew up living this EXACT childhood in Seattle. When I first heard this song, I cried thinking about how many good memories I have playing baseball with my dad. When I hear this song now, I cry thinking about how many good memories I’m making playing baseball every day with my 6 year old son. Now we just need a decent Mariners team to rally behind. We love them anyways, but come on M’s!

This song is my personal anthem. I hate baseball. But this song entirely captures, how I feel about my home town, where I still live, work and raise a family. I work in first response, the overlapping memories of my childhood, my children’s childhood and the historic natural disasters that I have played a small part in is overwhelming to me at times. This song is medicine. Work hard and be proud of where you are from and then where you are from, is worth working hard for and being proud of.

I absolutely love this song, from the meaning to the beats and the passion for what he is rapping about. I remember that series too, but on the other end as a Yankee fan, heart breaking moment for me as an 13 year old kid, Tough to feel better after that, but seeing the passion that other people have for their team, and the same moment def helps. I felt the same with Rizutto, listening to him was like listening to no other.

Awesome post David! Like your point of view. We Seattleites were THRILLED the M's had actually made it in to the series! I was at that game and will never forget it. We really did make history that night! I Love this song too, might even be my favorite! It makes my cry tho!

Those were some damn good teams you had, Buhner, ARod, Edgar, to go along with the pitching like the Big Unit. It was a respectful hate I had for that team. Still would love to see Donny get a ring with the Dodgers though.

Thanks, Ben. Born and raised in Ohio, I've been a Reds fan since before I could walk. I've always felt this song connected me to my Dad well before he passed away, earlier in this month. I heard all the games on 700 WLW, and I remembered the 1990s World Series. This song hits me in a place I didn't expect......but I did get the chance to live in Washington State for a year. A huge salute to Dave Niehaus (which I was honored to hear cover the M's in Safeco field) just as my heart goes out to Marty Brenneman and Joe Nuxall for Cincinnati. You sang a song of so, so many young boys all over the nation.

My favorite team is the Rockies, but the Mariners will always be my number 2. I've never lived in Seattle, neither has most of my family. I've never even been there. But everything this team has gone through, the incredible stories and incredible players, how could you not support them? The fans are evidently passionate, and I hope they get to see their team win the World Series one day.

***** Eh. One of my issues with hip hop is that as a drummer, I feel replaced since every beat is pretty much made by a machine. That's why I personally don't like it, knowing that it is a personal issue. I don't think it's inferior by any means, since the quality of lyrics aren't influenced by the genre of music, and just because I may not like something doesn't make it bad. I like classic rock mostly but I don't expect everyone here to agree.

Macklemore, you need to release more songs like this that have a meaning. At my school, in a subburb in Seattle, everyone thinks of Thrift Shop when they say your name.

Kelly Seana Yes, but my point is most people in my school, which is in Seattle (Macklemore's hometown) think of Thrift Shop when they think of Macklemore. I don't like that. I know he has made many songs that have meaning, but I want him to make more, because I enjoy those songs more.
@keeganhs444911 жыл бұрын
Precourser Possibly it's just because 'Thrift Shop' is his most known song due to it being on top of the Top 200 Billboards for a number of weeks. Maybe they just haven't gone further into Macklemore's songs such as Language of My World and Vs. Redux EP etc. Hopefully they do though because the songs that Kelly^^^ listed above as well as many others have wonderful meanings to them.
@Timewarp78711 жыл бұрын
Precourser Thrift Shop, the way I interpret it, does have some meaning. You don't have to have a ton of cash to have good style. I think it's a good thing this song is popular because it could stop some bullying because of "less stylish" clothing. I do agree with you though, it annoys me when people ONLY think of Thrift Shop when Macklemore is brought up.

Noah Oudejans it could be! However, he is talking about an exact moment in western Washington sports history. I distinctively remember that moment as a kid. we all felt like anything was possible, like we could actually make it this time. dave Niehause was THE voice of seattle baseball and an announcer like no other. he gave descriptions and interjections like poetry. During that time though between his coverage, and the amazing baseball, it felt like magic and everyone went in just to watch the game. we all felt united and the rush was amazing.
