As a Windows user for nearly three decades, I was a little confused when I bought my first MBA M2 a year ago and was confronted with Apple's way of installing apps - to be honest, I missed that next-next-next thing. Now I love the ease of installing apps that MacOS offers. Another useful video for newcomers. Thanks, Gary!

Nice video. A nice sequel might be how to uninstall an app, packages and what not, whether from the App Store or Web. 😁(asking for a friend)

4:36 Thank you so much Gary! I always wondered about this, if that file was needed or not. Now I can go delete all the third party dmg files

Love your videos. Clear, concise, no fanfare, perfect for new Mac users like me.😆 So, I'm about 2 weeks into my Mac experience (after decades of using Windows PCs) and the biggest problem has been me overthinking things. I'm so used to the step-by-step routine for doing almost everything. It took me way longer to figure out how to move my music library to my Mac (me overthinking, afraid I'd screw something up) than for everything to show up in Music! My one big regret: Not buying a Mac sooner.

Gary, If I know someone who is coming from using Windows and who has just bought a Mac I’m going to tell them to watch this video before they do anything else. I remember when I got my first Mac in 2008 I didn’t know what to do after downloading my first DMG file even though I had been using computers for decades. Finally, after a few minutes it dawned on me that the image in the DMG window was literally telling me what to do. 😂

Gary, you can also eject the disk image by doing a right click inside the window where you get the option to do so.

Something that I think at least some would be interested in is how some apps are launched automatically when the Mac boots or a user logs in. Examples are anti-virus apps and some sound processing apps. In particular where does MacOS look for these and how one can control which apps do and which don't launch on boot/reboot/login.

System Settings, General, Login Items.

Not all apps installs like this way. Adobe or Edge for example. Both follow a Windows style installation method. Clicking continue / next I mean. Though people coming from Windows world that feels homely 🙂

What about uninstall? 7:30

Depends on the app. For many, you can just drag the app from the Applications folder to the Trash. But Apple allows developers to do as they wish with apps, so some may require more. The developer should spell it out.

Gary can you do one on removing old programs/apps from computers?. My old imac is full off old stuff and i need to clear space and no idea what program/app is best to use for this. Thanks

Do you have a 4K screen with "looks like 1080" enabled? Because its like that in your video's
@macmost2 ай бұрын
These tutorials? No. I don't have the screen set to something you would normally use. It is set to "looks like 720" (AKA 1440 HiDPI). I do this so you can clearly see menus and buttons while watching on your screen, inside your browser, inside of a KZbin video rectangle.

Hi Gary. When I open google maps on my imac, it opens in a town far south of where I am and I have to shift the map to show my area. Any way to change this? Do you know?

A little off-topic, but... what happens when you click the location arrow at the top of the window?

Thanks Gary, Once I install the app I want it in the dock. I normally go to the app folder and make an alias of the app. Then drag the alias into the dock. I don't want to copy the app just point to it. My question is do I need to do this or could I just drag the app to the dock and the OS will just put a shortcut in the dock? Thanks
@danielhort29012 ай бұрын
You don’t need to create an alias. Just drag the app into the Dock and a "shortcut" to the app will be automatically added to the Dock. And the app will stay in the Applications folder where it belongs.
@macmost2 ай бұрын
Yes, as @danielhort2901 says, just drag the app to the Dock.

I make video tutorials about how to use your Mac. I have lots of apps installed to learn about them and look for potential things to talk about.
