Nice new funds here, particularly with AT&T. And of course, that kickass new version of the theme song. This and the 1999 version are both my favorites. It is strange having the 1971 PBS logo after this theme, tho.

For a long time, the "most trusted anchorman" in America was Walter Cronkite on CBS, and I'm guessing even MacNeil and Lehrer didn't wish to compete with him, so they were satisfied to just supplement him with the MacNeil/Lehrer report, which was an in-depth coverage of one news story of the day.. Cronkite retired in 1981, and after some more time, it was then, that MacNeil and Lehrer decided they could manage to be a substitute for the other network news, and they expanded their show to an hour to do so.
