I learned a lot! I was born and raised here! I guess I’ll go on a “tourist day” here soon to explore everything I haven’t seen. This was great and brought back a lot of interest in my city for me. There is a lot of crime and poverty here and it’s hard to remember Macon has its good points.

Even before Capricorn and the Allman brothers, Macon had a vibrant music scene. I was part of it from late 50s through the mid 60s, playing at nearly every live music venue in Macon, and many others around middle Georgia. Macon musicians in the various bands typically knew each another and often if one group finished earlier they would come hang out where others were playing, maybe even sharing a very late meal afterward when all were done. Many think Capricorn was Macon’s first recording studio, but it wasn’t. The first was on Mulberry Street a couple of doors down from the Grand Theater in a building that no longer exists. It was affiliated with King Recording Company in Cincinnati and locally run by Bobby Smith. (King was founded and run by Syd Nathan, considered a giant in the industry in those days. Even as a teenager I met Syd in Macon and Cincinnati.) Bobby was our managing agent for a while and I often was the studio bass player. Smith was also Wayne Cochran‘s agent so Wayne was frequently in the studio with us. In those early days, even before the recording studio, Bobby also represented Otis Redding. I was a teenager in Bobby’s office one day when Otis walked in with a tape recorder to get reactions on two new songs he wrote: Shout Bamalama and Fat Gal. They became Otis’ first record release. Because there was no studio in Macon, Bob asked if we would like to ride with them to Athens, where they rented a sound studio at the University to watch Otis record. While there Otis decided he needed background singers, but had none so they drafted us to do it. If you listen to Shout Bamalama and think the background voices singing, “Who shall be free,” sound like white boys, you’re right. It was three of our group plus Wayne Cochran. The first record generated interest in Otis and Bobby Smith sold his existing agent contract rights. I still have several of the 45rpm recordings from the studio in early and mid-60s. Recently, I found two songs on KZbin recorded in Macon in 1964 by “The Fabulous Dinos” from New York. I think none of the recordings in the first Macon studio were great enough to make it big.

The Society Garden is a cool place to chillax. If you're lucky enough, you'll get to hear the cool stylings of Dean Brown & The Dubshak Band! They're an island-inspired treat. Not surprised to see Johnny Robert Hollingshed, Jr. aka Bobby on the scene at Grant's Lounge! LOL Always in the spotlight! Oh wow! I haven't seen Ms. San in forever! And Freddy (RIP) on that bass! That really takes me back. I can't believe how many legendary elbows I've rubbed. Incredible. I never realized that WIBB is like KMEL in California. Awesome!

I understand moving forward and not living in the past. However, Grant's Lounge has AMAZING history and unfortunately it was gravely missed in this video for whatever reason. I think this video should be titled "Macon, Allman Brother's Hometown." This was a 'unique' video.

Macon, Georgia is a terrible place to live; there're few good paying jobs or opportunities and the crime rate is astonishingly high.

Great memories of the 1842 house. Just don’t go on a Monday, nothing is open. General Sherman borrowed a horse and returned it from a local resident

LOL This video shows a map of Georgia, AND MACON IS IN THE WRONG SPOT... The map shows Montezuma, not Macon. And the opening intro of the video features an animation of a City Hall sign and a diner sign, yet neither of those signs exists in Macon It makes me wonder if the producers of this video have ever been to Macon before
