Never been a KZbin commenter but this time my selfishness wasn’t enough to not show my appreciation. Very few times have I come across a tutorial so well articulated and easy to understand. I gave life back to my 2011 iMac that would’ve kept collecting dust for decades to come. It’s infuriating to think how Apple strategically restrains you from updating your old systems so you would buy their new ones. Truth is, Monterey runs smoother than ever in my 10 years old mac and I couldn’t be happier to save money instead of fuelling Apple’s wasteful system. Kudos to you! 👏

I assume you’ve upgraded your hardware to an SSD and more RAM? The average user doesn’t do that, and I think that’s why updates get cut off after a certain point. I can’t imagine it would run well on a spinning hard drive with four gigs of ram like you find in those older systems by default. Edit: tried 4GB of ram in my 2012 MBP, with an SSD, and maaaaan was Catalina much less responsive, my guess is due to the page file being used quite a bit. Went back to 16GB lol

Thanks so much for creating this video. It saved a perfectly adequate 2011 27” iMac from landfill as its last supported MacOS, High Sierra is too old for many of the major application vendors to bother with. Followed the hardware disc and memory upgrades and the video was just perfect to lead through the patch to upgrade to Monterey. I simply wouldn’t have done it without Mr Macintosh’s’ guidance. Now, my “useless” Mac is perfectly adequate/fast for every day to day tasks.

Our 2011 iMac hadn’t been used for some time (ahem.. maybe 2-3 years) and I was a little disappointed to find that some software we now wanted to use did not run on the OS and of course the standard updates no longer offered a path forward. OCLP is the best way to get an unsupported Mac updated to MacOS Monterey (and hopefully Ventura, when it arrives), and Mr Macintosh provides the best instructions on how to install. He goes quickly through the information, but he is thorough and comprehensive. I recommend watching the instructions from start to finish before you try OCLP for the first time, and then go back and follow the steps that you need for your personal machine. I've been using OCLP for a while now on a Mac Pro 5,1 (2010). My machine has a Radeon RX580 graphics card which has the Macintosh ROM flashed by MacVidCards. I also replaced the WiFi and Bluetooth hardware cards with a more recent card from an iMac (I bought a kit on the auction site that provided the card, some cables and connectors, and instructions). With these two hardware upgrades, my Mac Pro has Metal-compatible graphics card and supported WiFi and Bluetooth, so OCLP does not need to install any legacy root patches. One nice advantage to OCLP over other patching methods I had used previously for Big Sur is that my Mac Pro now receives and installs Monterey updates (including Beta versions) using Apple's standard Software Update. Before allowing Software Update to install an update, I check youtube to see if Mr Macintosh has installed and tested the update and verified that it has no problems.

Michael, thank you very much! You called it on your Mac Pro, it is in a perfect spot with an updated wifi / bt card & metal graphics card! It should continue to run well into the future. I hope the OCLP devs can get Ventura working 🤞

Thank you so much for this! I was able to transition from Mojave to Monterey with my Mac Pro 5,1! It must be stressed; if you have ANY PERIPHERALS, multiple monitors connected to the GPU (I have three monitors to my RX 580), internal USB 3.0 cards, etc., DISCONNECT ALL OF THAT! I Cannot stress that enough. All you need is the barebones of the system, USB keyboard and mouse, and one monitor to make this upgrade work. Trust me, it will save you time. Also, if the OPTION key doesn't work with the restart to see/choose the other drives, do CMD + R (Recovery). The OPTION, never worked, period. I had to CMD+R, run the TERMINAL, DISABLE the SIP, restart, Boot back into Recovery (CMD+R), run TERMINAL again to mount the USB EFI, bless it, and restart. I hope this helps anyone who had trouble.

@@olafszester2244 what finally got me up and running was to use a spare 2012 MacMini i7 quad ($120 CL purchase) to upgrade a clone of a Mojave install. OCLP balked at first using the MacPro configuration but I was able to get the install to proceed. Transferred the SSD into the MacPro and ran post install patches to get the wi-fi running and tweak the spoof level to get best performance out of the 580. Worked a lot better than yanking all the cards out of the MacPro and tinkering around with Terminal. The only software that won't run under Monterey thus far is X-Plane 11. Parallels VMs, Docker, Davinci 18, running quite well. When first running the setup on the Monterey install take the time to set up your iCloud. Your other iDevices will alert you login on a new Mac. I bypassed this process upgrading the girlfriend's Mini (she got a better machine out of the deal) and the preferences on her Monterey install would not take. Had to repeat the clone Catalina, OCLP upgrade to get that system up to speed with Monterey. Frustrating upgrade but worth it.

I consider myself successful in installing, via clean install, the latest Monterey build on my MacBook Pro 15 Retina, 15-inch, mid 2012 (10.1 model), which still works great. The Monterey is smoother and a little faster. I believe, I appreciate it. Everything works well. I repeat myself - everything (or almost). The only concern is that some applications constantly quit unexpectedly. Uninstalling and installing does not change anything. Like, for example, ExpressVpn, which has a particularly strange behavior. It opens correctly, but as soon as I press "Connect" it quits unexpectedly. Strange, right? Do you have an idea or suggestion to give me so that I can solve this problem? Thank you very much in advance.

I upgraded my mid-2011 27 inch iMac (bought new for $1000 cdn) with a 500gig SSD and 12 gig ram but unable to find an easy and inexpensive way to upgrade the software. Then watched this video and successfully install Monterey a day ago. It helped to watch your video on my PC while performing the upgrading on my iMac! After the upgrade, software update said upgrade to macOS Ventura is available so I downloaded it and it installed! Many thanks to you and Opencore for keeping my iMac up to date.

Just wanted to say THANKS!!!! My MacBook pro mid 2012 has been stuck for years, not being able to upgrade to compatible MacOS. This happened after I did the CD drive to SSD swap, I don't know if that was the reason why I wasn't able to upgrade. I tried everything under the sun until I came across this video, now I'm running Monterey on it! I don't usually leave comments but signed in specifically to show my appreciation.

Thanks for your extraordinary work, it always impresses me how professional you are. Thanks to you i’ve been keeping my Late 2013 21.5’ iMac with an upgraded SSD always up to date for years, first with Patched Sur and now with Open Core Legacy Patcher. I wanted to ask you something: when I updated to Monterey with OCLP some months ago, I did it as an upgrade having Big Sur (that it was done thanks to Patched Sur), and even though it has worked amazing, being able to enjoy all new features flawlessly, I’ve had to deal with reaaaally long booting times every time I turn on my Mac (that I didn’t have with Big Sur nor Catalina) and once in a while it can do some funny glitches that i can fix them by rebooting the Mac. So I was wondering, can I do a clean install to try to fix this issues using this process even though I’m already in Monterey with OCLP? Thanks and greetings from Chile!

Hello Gabriel! Thank you very much for the comments 👍. For your situation, I would reccomend a a full PRAM Reset, Erase and fresh install of Monterey. This would remove all previous parts of any other patcher and give you a fresh start. Let me know how it goes!

I am not a techie and would dread this type of operation and after I almost begged two techie friends who were unavailable I had to try to install this patch with OPENCORE. your patience in crafting this video allowed this 2012 Mac book air belonging to my family to have life again. many thanks for having a simple to follow ( I had to rewind it a few times). But everything in it worked (even with different versions). hats off to you Mr. Macintosh. Can you do a vid about AI next?

This video in particular, plus another showing how simple it is to upgrade these older macbooks convinced me to buy a 2011 model and upgrade. Total cost £198 GBP, I now have ‘modern’, fast and cavernous Macbook Pro... a huge vote of thanks and appreciation for all your hard work and professionalism. Having a great Macbook Pro AND up to date OS has given me just what I need, for a fraction of ‘new’ cost. Now I can’t leave my ‘new’ Mac alone! 😂

Successfully installed latest OS (2023) on mid-2011 iMac with SSD following your instructions. Amazing. Only hiccup was that the Bluetooth Mac mouse can’t be used during the restore/install stage so make sure to have a USB mouse handy. Was possible navigating with keyboard only, but was not easy! Thank you for this great video 👍🏼

Thanks for the tutorial! It really helped me, I was stuck on BigSur in a 2014 mac mini Even though Monterey was officially supported for my mac mini, it had problems booting and in the initial setup, watching your video I think I can pinpoint the problem, it was the graphics (the wallpaper even had artifacts). Using the official way the graphics wouldn't load properly, I was stuck in the setup in the set username/password screen. The only option was to boot in safe mode, it was slow, the graphics really struggle, but in the end it worked, I could create the user account. After the user account was created and the OC patched the graphics (16:58) it just worked! Thank you !!

Mr M, Thank-You so much... My 2012 Mac Mini (2 SSD's/16gb ram) is again my go to Machine, shelved for about a year, did a "maintenance" routine, (CPU paste & fan clean) and did a "clean" install of Monterey from Catalina. The Mini with Monterey is great, all these new features and now I can use my iPad pro 2018 as a 2nd display running my Roon install, and go to "widgets". Your tutorials are great, keep up the good work. Phillip

Thank you!! Very well done. Thanks to you and the devs of OpenCore Legacy Patcher I was able to install Monterey on my 2009 classic Mac Pro. It works great. Thank you, Mr. Macintosh. Now my late 2008 MacBook Pro is reborn with your patch. I have noticed that (vs El Capitan) performance is slightly slower, which is expectable if machine uses Core 2 duo CPU :) but the amount of advantages of Monterey against El Cap says everything. For those who want to apply patch to a such machine you may bump with the situation when installer says "less than minute remaining" and seems hang, LEAVE IT AND LET IT ACCOMPLISHED. In my case this particular step took 2 hours or about.

How much time could one expect an experienced computer repair tech to spend on this? the approximate start to finish time in minutes to install new os on a unsupported, pristine, 13" late 2011 MacBook pro holding 180 GB data, 16gb ram, using these steps and tips by a highly trained person, using high speed ssd and minimum 100mbps internet connection. Someone who already knows all this and has done it many times before. Someone like you, thank you. I really appreciate any kind of an honest guesstimate you can give. Thank you for this excellent walk through. I' have a 2014 iMac and have just installed an external SSD drive, as it was running so slow on the internal HDD. I am curently running Big Sur, but after trying to update to Monterey, it kept failing, as now I found out my machine is not supported. I need to update to ver 12 MacOS to continue to run and get updates for Autodesk's Fusion 360 software, as they have just come out saying that from March 2024, anything below MacOS 12 will no longer be supported and no updates will be available. Think you just saved my bacon/sanity lol. Again, a BIG thank you. Got yourself a new subscriber

@@JacobGeleyn Hi, check how much ram you have. In a different video, it was suggested that having less than 8gb might be the cause for Monterey not installing. That particular iMac I was having trouble with had only 4gb. I settled with Catalina via Dosdude1 method.
