MacOS, Windows 10 and Ubuntu Linux on Macbook Pro (Triple boot)

In this video we'll go over setting up a triple boot system on a MacBook pro!
We're going for macOS, Windows 10 and Ubuntu Linux.
Step by step Guide:
1) We'll assume starting point of HD with macOS (in my case Catalina)
2) Partition HD using boot camp to allow space for Windows and Linux
3) Install Windows 10 using boot camp from macOS on new partition
4) Install the boot loader: rEFInd (so we can choose OS at boot time)
5) Shrink boot camp partition to allow space for Linux installation
6) Install Ubuntu Linux on our newly created partition and enjoy!

Before installing rEFInd boot manager, you need to disable the System Integrity Protection (SIP) mode, otherwise rEFInd won't install properly. SIP was added on all MacOS versions starting from El Capitan (10.11) and rEFInd will give you a fat warning if you try to install it without disabling the SIP first. To disable SIP, boot into recovery and in the terminal execute: csrutil disable

And there the fun stopped. My Macbook booted into the internet recovery which has no csrutil command. So after managing to install W10 and updating it to W11 via a Rufus image, I now have to reinstall MacOS in an effort to get back the local restore partition. So be warned: your first step MUST be to check wether your system recognises the csrutil. EDIT: I downloaded the installer for my installed MacOS version (Big Sur). Created a bootable USB stick to reinstall and booted from the stick. I nearly clicked Install MacOS when I noticed the menu option Utilities. Starting terminal I now could enter csrutil disable. Rebooted and again started the recovery from the Big Sur installer USB. Refind gave an error "root device doesn't have an efi system partition", which I solved by copying the EFI directory from an refit image onto the refind stick. Rebooted into the Big Sur installer and now Refind completed it's installation. And after a restart the Refind menu came up.

I tried this method many times on my MacBook air and it ended up messing my bootloader every time. I tried installing Ubuntu alongside OS X and it works for a day and two then again it mess up with my bootloader and I ends up removing everything and reinstalling OS X from scratch. The only thing that worked perfectly for me is installing windows alongside OS X using bootcamp

I do have a MacBook Air (early 2015) with MacOS Monterey and it worked fine for me, but I had to do some more steps. I am able to start MacOS Monterey, Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04.06 now. Notice I changed my original 256 GB SSD to a WD Blue SN550 1 TB SSD. 1. I did the same steps like in the video. In minute 18:01 I was not able to boot directly from the Linux symbol so I bootet the EFI version. Notice: In Windows it was also only possible to boot from EFI. 2. After booting into ubuntu there is a posibility to install Ubuntu on the desktop. Click it and follow the installation like in the video explained. 3. It is important to use the right path for the device boot loader installation in minute 20:48. Choose the Device which you have set for ubuntu. 4. Follow the installation progress until the end of the installation in the video and your MacBook will restart. 5. The next Steps will be different to the ones in the video 6. My MacBook wasn't restarting in rEFInd Boot Manager. It startet up on the Linux Manager und I was able to boot into Ubuntu. If you want to boot into MacOS restard and hold the option (alt) key. The Problem is I was not able to start in windows. To fix this and get back to the rEFInd Boot Manager follow the next steps. 8. You need to install the rEFInd Boot Manager again. I found a Tutorial on KZbin which explained the steps. Click the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5Oyf6avmbGJaaM and jump to minute 10:40 and follow the video to minute 16:11. 9. Afterwards the rEFind Boot Manager should be installed and you can restart. There should be macOS, ubuntu and windows available in the Boot Manager. For me macOS and ubuntu worked fine, but Windows was still not working. Every time I tried to start windows I had the message: BlInitializeLibrary failed 0xc00000bb 10. To get rid of this error message start into macOS and follow the answer on this side: apple.stackexchange.com/questions/323461/triple-boot-macos-high-sierra-linux-mint-and-windows-with-refind 11. Afterwards you should be able to start in Windows, macOS and Ubuntu. I hope it is working for you the same way as it does for me. I was able to fix this 30 minutes ago. If there will be errors or problems in the future, I will let you know.

The problem is that you make the Windows USB in Windows. Who uses that? All you need is Ventoy ( Win, Mac and Linux, all covered ) and a large USB stick/SD Card. Install Ventoy on the stick/card. It will make 3 partitions there. Ventoy EFI, Ventoy and SD Data. You can drag your iso's * ( yes more than 1, but that depends on the size of your disk ) to the Ventoy partition. I could not get my 2009 iMac booted though. But that is just me, maybe a lack of knowledge, as I only have an iMac 2 months ( option key doesn't work to ge the bootmanager Macboys). On every other system I have it works perfect ( if your device lets you boot from that USB-stick/SD Card ). 1 stick with e.g. 20 iso's. Windows 7,8.1,10,11, Linux distros as far as the eye can see, BeOS, Haiku. 🥰

I've perfectly reinstall a macOS Big Sur, and did every single step in your video with good result (many times), BUT, at the end, once ubuntu is installed, Mac is ok and Windows 10 (which was ok before) doesn't start anymore neither from the 2/3 entries of Refind or from the alt/power menu. From legacy button in Refind, I get a "BOOTMGR is missing" message. Any idea ?

Same here...I'm doing Monterey/Win 11/LinuxMint. And I can get windows and Mac to play nice and Mac and Linux to play nice... But every time windows and Linux wind up on the same machine (always installing Linux last, because if Linux is already on the drive, windows refuses to install) It doesn't matter where I tell Linux to write it's bootloader...it always breaks the Windows bootloader. And Windows refuses to install, if Linux is already installed.

Finally got some good use for an old MBP2015 Retina: MacOS Monterey (native), Windows 10 Home and Linux Mint on one machine! Works fabulous. Did exactly what the video prescribed, but it did not go right all the way: installing Linux Mint (and previous also when installing Lubuntu), the Linux partition did not show up in the rEFInd menu. When starting up, rEFInd showed the Mac and Windows startup, but not the Linux startup. Only if I started up with pressing the ALT key, I could choose the Linux partition. So I repeated the part where you install rEFInd in the terminal (by pressing CMD + R) and voila, Linux appeared. It now also shows a. the entry "Boot EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi fom EFI" which starts up Linux Mint right away b. an entry that says 'Boot Fallback boot loader from EFI', that boots into the Linux Grub. This results in not getting the rEFInd menu again. Reinstalling rEFInd fixed this, but there might be an other way to go to the rEFInd menu again? And then I wonder why there are two W10 options and two MacOS options. Is there a particular reason for?

Old macbooks are still overlooked triple or dual boot is a pain to setup but if it works it works well, just finish windows 10 update from windows 7(if you have old mac is even harder, try and get your hand on the latest macbook pro with a Intel chip set

Great value add! Thanks for this. Through trial and error I had gotten to the point where I could almost do this, but the missing piece for me was the boot loader that you installed. One question I do have is, Catalina is the newest version I can put on My MacBook pro 9, 1 after that, if I want to upgrade further I'd have to use patch tools but that comes with open core bootloader. Do you know if there's a way to patch Mac OS up to Ventura without screwing up the bootloader?... Or is that something where you patch it and then replace the bootloader open core with your bootloader you recommended rEFInd?

You probably need to change the refind.conf to see your windows efi file. All you need to do is: sudo mkdir /Volumes/ESP sudo mount -t msdos /dev/diskThatIsTheEFI (To find it, type diskutil list) then go into /Volumes/ESP in the Finder app the navigate through 'EFI' to find 'refind'. Open the refind folder and edit refind.conf Add an entry (examples at bottom of config, assuming youve never touched it) My example: menuentry "Windows" { loader /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi ostype "Windows" } You can add an icon, but I didn't. Make sure to not disable it by adding 'disabled' at the end. Next, save it and reboot your system. If this doesnt work, try again.

You need a windows PC to run the media creation tool, but you can get the full iso file from the microsoft website. I'll suggest you run windows first before Linux.

Great video, thank you. However, I got a SIP warning but worked it out. And now I only get the Ubuntu grub book option screen. How to get the Refind boot screen to default please? Plus power button + alt gives me the usual boot options but selecting Windows just goes in to Ubuntu grub and Ubuntu, what have I missed not seeing the Refind boot screen? Thanks for the video, bro! I was pulling my hair out and didn’t know what I was missing. I was installing bootcamp, then making a third partition in Disk Utility from my main drive partition. Nice turorial. Ive installed big sur, windows 10(without bootcamp) and Linux mint. But unfortunately Refind works a couple of times; once i run big sur or windows the bootloader hoes back to apple standar :( Any advice?

This only happens to me after Apple update (seems like linux/win leaves bootloader alone when updating). The fix is to pop in refind usb (from recovery) and reinstall it, then its back to normal. Honestly every big update from Apple I kind of already expect this to happen since they detect its running Apple hardware and apply patches to the bootloader which rewrites it... key is to know this in advance so you only do major update when its also convenient to reinstall refind.

I'm pretty sure you can create a custom boot entry in refind, check this page: www.rodsbooks.com/refind/linux.html Take a look at the refind_linux.conf file and see if you can add an entry there. I will try to do simulate this in my setup although I only use one hard drive and report back!

You can always hold option key to boot another operating system. refind needs to be installed from recovery (command + r).

Hi really great video, i have macbook 2016 touch bar 4 thunderbolts running mac os big sur. I followed everything according to you and i stuch at where u choose language for ubuntu. I was using version 16.4 then I downloaded ubuntu 20.1 and it installed smoothly along with windows and mac os. I only have one problem which is I can’t connect to wifi . @@eakchhung7489 hey there, no it ran for some two days only and i was unable to load windows, and wifi in ubuntu never worked.SO i decided to delete to format the whole system and started with fresh, firstly installed mac os create partitions for windows and ubuntu. Installed ubuntu, at the end installed windows without bootcamp. after installation of win, i then installed bootcamp drivers, and thats it. 3 OS on my system now all running fine for 2 weeks execpt ubuntu's wifi problem. i can connect to internet by iphone hotspot or ethernet, but it never connected to any wifi. if u have any solution would be great help

In my case I did it only once thru Ubuntu installer. I showed how to do it under Windows' disk management tool because some Linux installers don't have a partition manager during installation. So it is under your discretion which shrink method to use.

Linux is in a weird state if you mean on the MacBook Pro 2016 version. I've gotten it to run on the MacBook Pro 2016 no touch-bar version (Macbook14,1), but the audio did not work. Github has a lot of different tutorials about how you can get that to work.

Not at all, the operating system simply loads the kernel and required files from the hard drive location, which means the data for the other operating systems simply arent loaded when another one is in use. If you still have any doubts you can install 2 operating systems and use a chronometer to track how long boot time it takes before and after you install the second OS.

Incorrect, it will only take more space in your hard drive but does not affect speed at all. Like I mentioned above, you can use a timer to check how long it takes for your macbook to boot with only 1 operating system and then with 2 or more and it will be the same.
